According to SW precedent, no. People hyped Sunset Overdrive and it was received well, 8/10; 80/100 on Metacritic. But it did not sell like hotcakes so it gets called a failure, flop etc. Mind you, SO isn't the fifth installment in a series but a new IP.
I'm not saying TC makes logical sense here, but lets not pretend this type of jimmie rustling is unheard of in SW and cows are certainly perpetrators.
@nintendoboy16:
Um... you realize your preferred presidential candidate has views many call xenophobic, right? Just thought I'd point that out.
More importantly he was shown at the debate to be a ten year old with a trust fund. Couldn't answer a question, moderator had to remind him what the question actually was more than once, spoke of tempermant while showing none. LMAO
Another AAA game for the PS4 incoming. leMS are losing there shyt that it brought Charizard out of witness protection.
WTF? TC is a sheep dude LOL
@KBFloYd: Oh calm down, Charz only came back to just put you in you're place and that's it. He's not staying this long, just as long as you stop making Persona 5 shitty threads of course.
Well let him keep making them then!! Keep char here, make SW great again
You kinda need to compare these sales to previous entries to the series to consider it a flop or a success.
@ArchoNils2:
As i said before in other thread FF is going in a downwardspiral while Persona gaining more ground probably P7 or P8 will outsell FFXVII or FFXVII if FFXV fails to deliver like FFXIII.
I really hope this happens ... or that FF gets good again. It's just sad that Braverly Default is the best FF in a long while and didn't veen get the FF name... just shows how out of touch SE is with its fans
Not sure what's better about this thread.
KBFloYd's expert bait, or the expert smackdown from Chaz.
All we have to do is keep posting P5 stuff and trigger Chaz into posting again. :)

Everyone has a different opinion. I know I'm in the minority, but I did like the FF13 series, I only didn't like 13. The story wasn't good, but the gameplay of XIII-2 and LR was just fine to me. So for me Final fantasy is still good, just not as good as before. Though for a final fantasy, even a spin off, to have persona like sales, yeah the series is losing popularity.
@cainetao11: I was referring to leMS(plural) and there are plenty them posting including an Ultra Mega Lem as yourself. If I mean TC I would said TC like I always do. Now go walk off another cliff.

While I totally disagree with you and hated LR and 13-2, you can't deny that FF14 at launch was horrible. I think it is impossible anybody really liked the game. Everyone who says he did is either a troll or a totally blind fanboy.
Also you haven't really written anything about recent FF games. I can see that somebody might like FF15, i hated both demos. Type-0 was pretty bad as well, can't even compete with Dynasty Warriors xD Most mobile FF games aren't much more than a crash grab. I do like Record Keepers though. Explorers was pretty bad too. However. the rythm games were great, World of FF looks promising and I would love to get a new Dissidia game.
Still, most recent FF games are, at least to me, pretty bad and the trend seems to go downwards
Makes sense...boring games should not sell well
Just wondering, did you actually play any of the games? It might not be a series for everyone, but it has some of the best characters I have ever seen in a game and the turn based battle system is amongst the best as well.
What a ridiculous topic. No one expected Persona 5 to become a Skyrim, Final Fantasy or even Dark Souls type seller. It will probably be well over 2 million sold by the end of 2017 and that will pretty successful for a game like this.
I know butts will be sore when another PlayStation exclusive scores 90+ on Metacritic. This just early damage control. Considering Atlus also makes exclusives for Nintendo I'm not sure why OP is hating on them.

I played Persona 4. And I absolutely hated it.
While the characters were above average, for gaming. They were lacking compared to what one would find in novels, comics and manga (especially since the P4 crew were basically poor man's versions of many archetypes found in there) as well as those found in movies.
The turn based combat was just poor. You had barely any customization over 3/4ths of your party, and the way combat was set up, it was basically buffing up, using your strongest attacks and healing when low on life. The pacing was some of the worst I have seen in gaming, with the summer and the intro being painfully slow. When a game takes 3 hours or so to even start, that is usually a really bad sign. Dull social linking moments whose gameplay involves around minmaxing your dialogue options,and hell the whole slice of life aspect of P4 in general came across as a glorified dating sim (a genre that already isnt my cup of tea), with well over a dozen similarities. Poorly designed bosses who take too freakin' long to kill, while lacking any interesting mechanics. Reskins everywhere, dull corridors which makes for duller dungeon crawling.
Maybe I could enjoy the game if I had not been such a minmaxer at heart. But my minmaxing nature made the social linking sections some of my least favorite parts in gaming as a whole. And the dungeon crawling, while I could at least stomach that. Still made me wish I was just playing something like Nocturne, which had much tighter pacing and balance.
Overall, I would give Persona 4 an F. One of my least favorite jRPGs of all time.
And as for P3? I didnt play it but I watched 2 of the movies. While the source material was obviously not bad. I had serious issues with A-1 Picture's directing. A lot of the lines came across as awkward, and the time skips were terribly implemented. Almost like the development process of the movies was a checklist of scenes they wanted in the film, and just put them all in without any consideration of the overall flow. Of course, I dont assume these faults are in the game. Since this is purely an issue with A-1 pictures. But still, watching the movie didnt exactly interest me in playing the game, and the horror stories of Tartarus makes me even less motivated to try them out.

I own the 3rd game for Ps3, never cared to finish it
@Maroxad: I love persona 4...
And if you didnt like 4, you probably wont be too happy with 3 either, but the dungeons in 5 are supposed to be more varied. Maybe that will work better for you
Indeed, different strokes for different folks. Persona 4 was a well made game. But it didnt really have to offer me anything I look for in games.
I am watching Persona 5 cautiously. Hoping for the best. The dungeon crawling looks massively improved. But I am more interested in what they did to social linking. That is what will make or break my experience. Social Linking elements have ruined 2 games for me now. P4 and Devil Survivor 2. The latter one which is really disappointing, because the mechanics and combat of DeSu2 was significantly improved over the first.

Thanks for answering. I just see much hate from players that never played the games. Sad it isn't for you, many get a lot of enjoyment ou of the series.
@Maroxad: Well when it comes to character in games, they are still amongst the best I have ever seen. Sure other media might be above them, but when it comes to gaming? I totally disagree on the battles though. The team is supposed to be static so you either have to switch them out or better use your main character to fit into what the other party members lack. You also ignore the whole weaknesses part where you need to find out as fast as possible who is weak against what so you can explout the weaknesses. But then you need to manage health and skill points as skills cost a lot of points and you really want to exploit weaknesses. Sure it's not as deep as a SRPGs, but it's deeper than compareable games

Well I don't like mmos so I never played Final fantasy 14. I didn't like dissidia and don't care about mobile gaming. I tired type 0 and the FF 15 demo and they seem alright to me but I don't own a current gen console and I don't like to play long games on someone's console. Also my interest in gaming has been dying for a couple of years and I'm kinda on a hiatus of video games. I haven't played anything since june and don't see that changing for now. Gaming has a whole simply doesn't feel as interesting as when I was younger. I used to come on this site every day for years, now I show up every now and then.

Unfortunately, "good for video game standards" is a shittastic excuse. Especially if the gameplay aspect of Persona is fairly bad. Not to mention, why keep low standards?
Your team in Persona being static is pretty poor design, especially from a pacing perspective. Battles in Persona change very little from level 12 to 70. With the most noteable difference being that you now have ways to regenerate SP. The game completely fails to freshen itself up and keep itself well paced. In Pokemon you gain access to a lot of utility moves (that you will actually use), cosmetically too will be different as your pokemon will look radically differently, and lethality is kicked up a notch too. In Divinity: Original Sin, Mages go from being the dominant damage dealer to a support class, not to mention, an increasing arsenal of varied abilites keep things fresh. In World of WarCraft, characters increasingly get fleshed out as you level up. Wizardry, the game who the battle system is modelled after, too had a much more well made battle system, with significantly less reskins, and signficantly more variety to combat with bards, gadgeteers, 4 spell schools and each of the 100 (or so) spells having 8 ranks each. None of this is present in Persona 4, where you deal with reskins of enemies you fought in the first 2 dungeons in the final dungeon. The combat is so simplistic in Persona 4, I once handed the controller to a friend, and he could kill the final boss without even touching the game before. No player skill whatsoever.
Exploiting enemy weaknesses isnt exactly compelling design. A 3 year old could do it just as well as an adult. What is far more compelling and rewarding is countering enemy strategies and patterns. That actually takes some thought process, and can outright reward inguenity. Older SMTs handled it much better. Since at least the demons weaknesses made some sense rather than being an arbitary selection with each new reskin.
@Maroxad: I like the combat and the characters are well written for any media form imo...
Fair enough.
Personally I felt the characters in Persona 4 are completely and utterly outclassed by the characters found in say... Berserk, Legend of Galactic Heroes, Full Metal Alchemist, Cowboy Bepop or Stein's Gate. And that is just in the anime and manga industry (yes I know Stein's gate is a VN but still).
And when we get into western TV, that gap only increases. And once we get into novels, we have works of art like Malazan. Where the P4 cast pales even in comparison to the most insignificant side characters in that book series.
To be fair, it is worth noting that the P4 cast is still stronger than some of the weakest links in each medium. Persona's cast is more compelling than the likes you might find in indie fantasy novels (good concepts but usually fall flat on its face in terms of characterization and execution), Cliche Light Novels like Sword Art Online and Asterisk War. But it still falls under the lower mid, to low tier in any other medium.
Those are great numbers for a console game in Japan. The console market is almost dead there, so there's no way a console game would sell a million copies there. There were no console games last year that reached a million sales in Japan, or the year before, or the year before that. The only hope is for Final Fantasy XV to finally end that trend and exceed that million sales barrier for console games in Japan.
Looking good for Atlus... I wonder if P5 will end up Atlus's best selling game of all time when it releases WW

Very likely.
The Persona franchise has generated plenty of goodwill with P5, and goodwill spreads across regions.
