@lamprey263: i think you pretty much nailed it with that. I think it is clear from trends that p5 will be the best selling Persona yet, and that that fanbase is expanding but it could definitely be accelerated far more as you have suggested.
I keep forgetting how little understanding of perspective and general knowledge of facts this board has, so of course, it surprises me to see the sheer amount of ignorance in this thread, especially in the OP and a lot of the first page, but let's get some things clear and clue the lot of you in:
But yes, you're right, the game totally 'flopped.' You have no understanding of Japanese console sales software, no understanding of the series' sales, and zero concept of what a 'flop' really is, but sure- Persona 5 was a flop.
F*ck me.
Oh, also, all of Japan's console game developers are praising the game, and the standard it is setting for console game development in the country.

Persona is a ray of hope for all the Japanese developers out there competing with the world’s greatest games. I’m currently working onNieR Automata and we are hard at work to make sure that we won’t lose against Persona.
My expectations for Persona 5 are incredibly high!

Hello Persona fans. My name is Yoko Taro. I can already hear some of you saying “Who the hell is that guy?”, so I think I should introduce myself to you. I’m a game director. There’s this game called “NieR Automata” from Square Enix that I’m working on and it’s coming out early next year. It’s target audience overlaps totally with Persona’s, so I think we really dodged a bullet when they delayed NieR Automata.
Well, when I was playing Persona 5 I kept thinking how awesome everything was: The menus, the battles, the characters – everything was stylish and awesome! But you’ve probably heard about that already from other people, so I’m going to write about the other things I found noteworthy to provide a different perspective.
The first thing that caught my attention was the darkness of the town. It’s really dark, as if someone reduced the saturation and brightness of the colors by 50% in Photoshop. That’s how bleak this place is. The teachers aren’t your friends and that leaves a bitter taste. It’s the kind of melancholic environment that makes you think “That’s just like my own experience of high school!”! However, what really stuck out to me were the bent backs of the NPC business men – that was great! Whoever came up with that idea is a genius.
Then of course there is the Shibuya Station. If you’ve ever been there before, I think you’ll understand what I mean when I say that trying to navigate this place is a nightmare. If you a new planner at a video game studio created a level like this, they’d probably get slapped… Or at least, that’s what I always thought, but it is a perfect recreation of the real thing. It’s fascinating.
Yongenjaya is also nice. If you leave Atlus’s headquarters, there’s a street that looks similar to that place. Maybe I was just imagining things.
Subtly changing the names of real places like this* adds a nice touch to the game. It’s an interesting way to express that adults are also kind of trapped. From a meta perspective, that was very enjoyable.
Until next time.

But yes, Persona 5 is totally a flop, just because it didn't show up on your beloved Nintendo machine. Butthurt fanboys always amuse me the most. Go cry to Nintendo because you didn't get anything worth shit to play on the Wii U this year.
It was hyped big time in here and was hyped in Playstation podcasts like Beyond on IGN, thats for sure so the game did have hype.

@charizard1605:
What "ignorance" are you quoting me on in regards to what I just said? I stated clearly which is a fact, the game was hyped in here and in Playstation podcasts and even by Greg miller on kinda funny all the time. I've stated in here before I've never played it before but was looking into it cause you and others have spoke highly about how great the game is so yeah it was hyped in here. Did I say it flopped, did I say it has commercial hype....no. So what ignorance are you talking about?

Not calling you ignorant, sorry. I quoted my post (which is basically calling the OP and some posters on the first page ignorant) as is to illustrate that the thread was sensationalist and dumb, and the game was in no way a flop. But no, I was not calling you ignorant at all- I was quoting that post (as well as my follow up post if you have seen it) to indicate that the game ended up living to its immense hype after all (with the general consensus in Japan being that it is the best JRPG released in 15 years).

Back with facts, bro.
Although isn't it 550k shipped?
300k in japan alone on week 1 is a flop?
it was 2 weeks...last week 260k...this week 40k... next week 30k?
you see my point.
and yes 300k for a AAA hyped franchise is a bit of a let down.
I think they meant AAA in terms of quality. And in terms of quality it looks to have met, if not surpassed hype.
Persona has always been niche, but even then. 380k in 2 weeks is still high tier. Not top tier like pokemon or FF, or Youkai Watch, but still high tier.

Technically- but Famitsu reports that over 90% of all shipments are sold out, meaning the game has a very short inventory period (in other words, most copies that were shipped were also sold).
Pretty sad to see the Japanese people giving up on buying JRPGs and instead buy shitty mobile games instead.
And again, the facts:

Haha, yes, you need to get done with it before P5 launches
While I'm not really here to entertain TC, I just don't care about Persona series but I will mention that Persona 5 sold 550,000 is definitely a successful launch in Japan alone and until Persona 5 release in the west, it'll continue to sell well when it does release and believe me, there are lots of Persona fans here in the west.
Oh now this is too good............and funny. Garbage game will continue to be garbage.
I was right again.

Lol no.
What being niche has to do with hype? Can't we hype a game we're excited about despite not being a system seller?
Fanboy much?
It's been a while since I felt we could look at Japan sales as actually meaning anything. But our Gamespot Flop culture must live on regardless so I guess enjoy that?
what japanese game has sold poor in japan but sold tons in the west?
Demon's Souls. It didnt sold well in Japan at all when it came out. The west gave it the sales it deserved
I kinda agree with some of those weaboos here, sales numbers don't make a game great, otherwise all those call of duty games would actually be good. However, in my opinion persona 5 is still trash just like every other hentai/anime crap game.

Also, dat Persona 5 love.

Oh, you know. Some fools need the record set straight every now and then. If P5 had actually flopped, I'd have accepted that no problems. But somehow spinning one of the most successful console games of this generation in Japan into a 'flop' is laughable.
Another AAA game for the PS4 incoming. leMS are losing there shyt that it brought Charizard out of witness protection.
@charizard1605: Welcome back :)
As for P5, already have it, playing it, and enjoying it very much. Some fun new systems were added that I'm enjoying
Thx bro
Is the P5 hype (greatest JRPG since 2000) holding true?
@charizard1605: As of now, I would say the hype for P5 was met.
I enjoyed P4G a lot, but P5 is a lot better (for me)
One of the new systems I'm enjoying is the "Hold up" which happens when you hit all enemies on screen with their weakness/critical and get them down. When that happens you trigger the "Hold up" where you decide to finish them off with a union attack, or talk with the shadows, which then you have the option to demand them for money, items, or make them into your persona. To make them into your Persona you get into a choice discussion where you have to answer 2 questions, if you can get the correct answers, they will join you, if not, they surprise attack you
@aigis: no more shuffle time. The only way to get a Persona are by recruiting the shadows, fusing, or summoning from Igor. Also, when a shadow has a "coward" personality, when its the only enemy on screen and on a weak condition, at times the shadow will beg for its life, this will also trigger something like a "hold up" without the union attack though.
America has more weebs than Japan at this point
Japan by definition doesn't have weebs at all.
Yeah, my brain exploded reading that... have we really forgotten the definition of a weeaboo? I thought it's gotten to a point where just plain liking Japanese media considers you a "weeb", but that post...
There country is dying. THERE MAKING less babies than there death rate. Japan is finished there empire is like rome and falling apart.
Soon its going to be down to like 80 million bro just look at the birth rates over there your country gets smaller you get weaker less people buying games etc.
If the Japanese become smart and stop being xenophobic, they would loosen their immigration laws and allow more immigrants into the country. It would stop the declining population. At least Europeans, while having a similar population problem like the Japanese are willing to allow immigration into Europe.
Um... you realize your preferred presidential candidate has views many call xenophobic, right? Just thought I'd point that out.
It's actually selling really well though? Japanese sales figures are just typically much smaller overall with the odd exception those figures are good for a new Japanese home console release.

What does this has anything do with the topic or even with this forum?
@Kashiwaba: the questions will be different by shadows. Lets say there is a Pixie shadow and a slime shadow, they both will have their own set of questions.
But because Atlus didnt want to make it a chore to keep on answering the shadows questions every time you "hold them up", they made it that if you turn them into your persona once, you have the option to either re-answer their questions, or just ignore it.
Also, your level has to be the same or higher than the Shadow you want to recruit, if not, they will just give you an item.
Persona 5 will sell fine dude, it IS a niche series. I've been a fan of it since Persona 3, and I'm excited as hell for P5.
One thing I will agree with from the OP is that some cows really were arguing in the past that the series "isn't niche" anymore. Funny to see the inevitable backpedal from some of you regarding that aspect.
I just finished playing Persona 3 which was awesome so I'm really excited for this game. I would hardly call the game selling well a flop, just check the link below.
http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2016/10/02/atlus-celebrating-persona-5-sales-jp/
Cows saying it's a "niche" game (it is) and then saying sales don't matter. Get the f out of here, biggest hypocrites on any forum ever.
I don't care about the sales. I just want to know the scores.
Also please Atlus.. Make Catherine 2 instead of more Persona games PLEASE
How was this game hyped?
The only person I ever heard talk or rant about it was Char....bless his heart.
