I don't think it was a joke.

He kind of slyly announced a game, kind of like a wink to the audience to let them know he's not forgetting about them - causing the laughter. More of a laughter of relief than anything, likely.

Nope and that's weak, especially for Nintendo, whom have been weak some time now.

The manner in which it was announced wasn't all that reassuring. Being pressured by all the negativity to scramble and tell us some games are coming isn't that good. Especially since we know that Nintendo definitely has some teams dedicated to hardcore games still.

The thing is, he probably announced this way before it was ready to be announced. Meaning we won't see this for a long time.

Nintendo has just announced (for the first time formally) that a new Pikmin is on the way.

During a developer roundtable at E3 2008, Nintendo creative mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed for the first time that Nintendo is indeed bringing back the beloved GameCube franchise, and we can only assume it's going to be for Wii.

Details on the game are sparse right now, but Miyamoto did casually mention "We're making Pikmin" during the roundtable presentation. He hinted earlier that a new Pikmin could be on the way – both in previous conferences and in our recent interview with him – but now it's officially official. Pikmin is making a return.

Aren't people confusing two different things here?

I'm reading through the Neogaf thread, and to me it seems like the "joke" was the little back and forth about whether or not Wii Music was a toy. Miyamoto stating Pikmin is in development sounded more like a statment than a joke, so i'll take it as a confirmation, thank you. I assume it's gonna be 2009.

This is the key point. Nintendo saying, "We're working on a new Zelda" shouldn't mean anything to us. It's a no brainer.

We all knew a new Zelda was coming all along, but when they unveiled TP that's when we were floored. Nintendo needs to show us games, not just tell us they're coming some point in the distant future.

Thats funny because of how he made you expect one thing and then did something that you wouldn't expect. Seems like thats a rather humourous thing to do, and people laugh at witty uses of language like that.

But no, you're probally right. The concept of Pikmin being made was funny to the people in the room, not the silly way he announced it.

The "joke", as I understood it, was the context of the announcement. He said that if they were making a new Pikmin he would let the reporters know about it so they should look forward to it in the future. Then he went on to immediately announce it. That's why they laughed, I think.

If Miyamoto stating it's in development isn't a proper confirmation, then I guess neither is Iwata saying a new Mario and Zelda are in development.
