Piracy isn't killing PC gaming. This however is.

Uuuuuuuuuuugh. I have violently torn apart DRM so many times, I don't even know where to begin again. I am going to blog it this time. Basically, DRM only screws the paying consumer. Pirates will always, always find a way to pirate.

Yeah, it was in GI. This doesn't affect me, but it really must suck for the legit PC consumers.

In that case piracy is killing PC gaming. As these things exist for the sole reason to stop piracy.

isnt that statement a little contradictory? as i am aware with many steam games you have to be connected to the internet to play them if im not mistaken.

Also in a fact i find it ironic you complain that its killing PC gaming but you yourself by not purchasing the game are inevitably killing it aswell..Isnt it ironic dont you think?

razgriz_101
no you dont need to be connected to the internet to play most games and as far as i am concerned when a company is trying to harm you with the legit copy its cool to pirate the game

Piracy - Its free, your game works

Buying it, Money, Please type in your limited use install code, plase type in your one time you content card codes, please wait while the game connects to online data base, please maintain a 24/7 connection to online data base to ensure you are a paying customer

For people who wonder why people pirate games.

These exist because of a flawed perception: That pirates can be stopped. All they're really doing is punishing consumers.

I personally have found myself very reluctant to buy certain PC games because of DRM.

Well...does that happen often? In the 5 or 6 years I've been with my ISP, they've only went down once...and that was because they were upgrading stuff.

As with most things PC, I expect console gamers will stop bashing us for it when it also becomes their problem.

Nuh uh they can't figure out this one! Lols. Yeah, fools. A piece of DRM that successfully prevents piracy is something I could see publishers reasonably employing and feeling like they're accomplishing something. Unfortunately, to date, there is NO SUCH THING.

Prince of Persia had no DRM, you could simply copy the retail CD and make as many copies and play as if were the real version.

Now Ubisoft has a new policy, major DRM to make life hell for everyone...

Can't blame them as Prince of Persia was heavily pirated...

There has always been piracy, only now for some reason it is really important to stop it with crazy DRM.

Wasdie

Crazy DRM is exactly why I dont play PC games other than an MMO here and there. All my games are on console for this very reason. It sucks that these measures have to be in place though to try to fight piracy.

Though I have to agree. Things like this only punish the legit customers with how intrusive some of the DRM can be.

It doesn't make sense to harass the consumer at all with something that is practically guaranteed to fail at its intended purpose. No matter how good you think your copy protection is, sooner or later someone will find a way to circumvent it.

So by ubisofts current move.

Legitimate gamers are killing PC gaming?

Because the only ones who are getting punished for this are people who actually purchase Ubisoft games.

Well thats the worst SystemWars logic I have seen in a long while, guess you can have a gold star for that.

Can someone please explain how exactly DRM helps stop piracy? It is cracked within a matter of days every single time. As far as I can tell all this does is punish legit customers and push them more towards piracy so they don't have to put up with the DRM.

DRM is rather ironic. It's supposed to stop piracy but all it does is teach legit customers that they get punished and pirates don't have to deal with these things.

Guybrush_3

Well Bioshock took 2 weeks to crack and a few Windows Live games took even longer.

I'm actually surprised something like this didn't happen sooner. The more data you have handled by a server the harder it becomes to pirate. Single player pc games have incredibly high piracy rates so it is understandable that they are doing this. The problem I have is with companies charging $50 for a digital copy of a pc game. I don't care about the DRM but there should be a discount if you forgo the ability to resell it.

I mostly buy games on the 360 anyways since it was clear years ago that the pc was not going to be treated equally when it comes to multiplats.

Why do they even bother with DRM/anti-piracy software, every single game ever has been cracked, which only leaves legit customers to suffer, really there's no point in it at all, atleast don't use overly invaise anti-piracy software sheesh

I assure you this will not stop the pirates. All it does is treat those that will have purchased the game legitimately as criminals.

That too, but as the old saying goes, some people never learn. I didn't buy Mass Effect until after they removed the ten day check and the five install limit. I enjoyed the game a lot more and when Mass Effect 2 came out, I bought the PC Collector's edition firsthand. Kind of goes to show what companies get if they learn from their mistakes and reward their customers instead of ticking them off. I never bought MW2 on the PC, due to the hacks and lack of dedicated servers, or will I get Assassin's Creed 2 on the PC because of the stupid DRM. You really disappoint me Ubisoft, I was a fan of Assassin's Creed Director's Cut, and all you did is punish the paying customers instead of acknowledging that piracy will always be an issue and instead of putting up more DRM, follow EA's example and give customers reasons to buy the game new and legally.

agreed and that is why i love stardock so much and support them the best i can. they have never punished their consumer base and have gone on record saying pirates are not who they produce games for and that pirates will not affect the way they do business.

this sucks. I was waiting for the PC version because I like gaming on my PC better and I also played the first AC on PC. But recently I've switched to a cheap ISP which provides very spotty service and I d/c every once in a while. I guess I'm buying the 360 version now :(

I really do hope this kind of invasive DRM won't come to Splinter Cell: Conviction. If it does, I will still buy the game (gotta get my Splinter Cell fix), but I will also look for a crack to remove this nonsense. As others said, legit customers shouldn't suffer for the crimes of the pirates.
