Gaming just keeps on getting bigger and bigger. Gaming is a lot more mainstream this gen than it was for example 2 gens ago, and ESPECIALLY 2 gens before that!
in the first gen, there was only a few hundred thousand gamers, which quickly rose into the millions when the Atari 2600 came along, the we had the NES that outsold all other previous consoles combined, then in the 4th gen there were two large multi-million consoles, the Genesis AND the SNES
In the 5th gen, gaming for the first time ever became mainstream with playstation, selling more than the NES+Genesis combined!
1st gen:
Like 1 million or so
Here's the numbers:
2nd gen:
Atari 2600: 30 million
total for the generation: approximately 35 million
3rd gen:
NES: 60 million
Sega MS: 13 million
total for the generation: approximately 75 million
4th gen:
SNES: 50 million
Genesis: 40 million
Sega CD: 6 million
Turbo GFX: 10 million
total for the generation: 106 million
5th gen:
PS1: around 130 million
Nintendo 64: around 35 million
Sega Saturn: like 10 million
total for the generation: 175 million
6th gen:
PS2: 155 million
Xbox: 25 million
Gamecube: 23 million
Dreamcast: 10 million
total for the generation: 203 million
7th gen:
Wii 97 million
PS3 70 million
Xbox 360: 70 million
Total for the generation: 237 million
As you can see, the numbers have increased for EVERY generation, from 1 million --> 35 million --> 75 million --> 106 million --> 175 million --> 203 million --> 237 million (AND COUNTING)
Without a doubt, current gen consoles which surpass the 250 million mark.
So what about next gen? the world's standard of living continually increases, people are getting richer, poor countries are starting to develope allowing whole new markets for developers to explore. Before, you had to be "rich" to afford gaming, nowadays, anyone in the western world, and a lot of poeple in even poor countries like China, russia, Brazil etc can afford a gaming unit!
I can easily see 300 million consoles being sold next gen.. Europe/US will probably have the same sales, the extra 50 million could easily come from Asian/south american/african countries.
