Inside Network analyst Billy Pidgeon,

I'd like to see maybe two models, one under $300 and one under $400 would be ideal. $299 is the magic price point. I think this current generation took way too long to get there. It has to be under $400 and honestly if they could subsidize it further and take more of a hit, it might be worth their while in the long run

That;d be ridiculous. Personally I can't see it releasing for less than 350. And that's being really hopeful.

Crazy talk. Pete-B

As much as it's pissing me off that VITA's price is not being cut, it would make sense if it's bc Sony want to eat the console price upfront.

If Nintendo is losing money with every Wii-U sold at a minimum of $300, there's no way in hell Sony's much beefier system is retailing at that price. $300 might be the eventual price when sales start to pick up, but I expect a $400 initial price tag at the very least.

I would be there day one. Everyone would buy one and everyone would make games for it.

We would have the true successor to the ps2 with the ps4 if that was the case.

PS4 will be $400. Any less and Sony will take major losses and anymore, they won't be able to compete with Microsoft and Nintendo.

Take it with a grain a salt, but I have read from tech forums the Ps4's components would add up to a BoM to around $300 USD (before 8GB of GDDR5 and final specs).

(Oh, and I am also reading that Next XBOX will have more raw performance than PS4. O.O)

It will probably drop in price later this year, it's just that SCE want to keep from eating any hardware costs RIGHT NOW.

Remove $100 for Wii U gamepad and you have a $200 console.

Also Nintendo isn't taking a big loss, if you buy one game they make profit for that Wii U system, so it's a minuscule loss. Sony have and are willing to take a bigger hit per console.

PS4 R&D was cheap enough that Sony already stated they will be able to be competitive.

No chance at that low, but I think $399 for a basic SKU with a 120GB HDD and then a $499 premium with 500gb HDD and 1 yr PS+ membership could be a possibility.

The PS3 is still being sold around the ~$300 price range. Anybody who expects the PS4 to launch anywhere near that price is crazy. I'm guessing it'll be ~$500, and eventually go down to ~$300 around 2015-6, which will be right in time for them to fulfill their 10 year PS3 goal.

PS4 Initial Cost Analysis

Pretty interesting.

So a couple of us at the bank have done a costing analysis this morning. I won't be able to give exact figures, as if we ever decide to release them publicly it will definitely blow my cover.

All figures in USD.

APU (CPU/GPU) - 85-90
8GB GDDR5 - 110-140
OS Chip (supposedly ARM based) - 12-18
Video encode/decode chip - 8-12
Blu-ray drive - 18-25
Hard drive - 38-50
I/O - 9-12
Wireless chip + antenna - 4
HDMI+HDCP - 11-15
Other - 25-35

Total - 320-401

Accessories:

DS4 - 18-30
PS4 Eye -$12-20
Mono headset - 3
Cabling/misc - 3

Unknown/Alpha:

Internal PSU - 25-55
Cooling - 20-38
Assembly - 13 (Based on being made in China, for made in Japan, make that ~ $45)

Total estimated system cost (no shipping and packaging) - $450-490

These figures are preliminary, and do not include assembly costs, power costs, cooling or shipping as the final design has not been shown and can't be estimated at this time.

Please, please, please remember that this is based on the specification only and cost prices that we know, without a PS4 in the hand there will be mistakes.

Nope, that is false. Reggie's statement about Nintendo making a profit when a Wii-U owner buys a game is wrong. It's a specific number of games that Nintendo didn't want to comment on.

That was actually regarded a good price at launch, the 3DS was the same price at the time, so Sony was pretty much matching the 3DS. The iPod touch is like $200 for the 16gb model, so I still think $250 is pretty good.

$299.99 is not at all a realistic pricepoint for a next-gen console in 2013. Especially a console that has 8GB's of GDDR5 memory and close to 2 Teraflops of compute performance. The PS4 isn't a freaking gimped console like the Wii U.

My predictions of price point.

No less than $350 and no higher than $499.

with the specs ps4 has announced. The costs are going to be very high..

8 gigs of ddr5 RAM? you know how expensive that is?

Its also sporting a pretty beefy gpu . Well the cpu is crap but it doesnt matter, they have a tailor made gpu to handle some cpu tasks.

500 gig harddrive might be pretty expensive

Delevoping all the tech for the streaming and such probably costed alot as well

i dunno , i think the rumors are pretty true, it will cost around $400 for basic version, and $500 for more memory version. And still sony will be taking big looses.

$400-500 for basic sku my guess. Pete-B
Given how badly the whole "599 US Dollars" thing wrecked the PS3's early sales, I doubt Sony would be willing to launch the PS4 around the same range.

[QUOTE="1PMrFister"]If Nintendo is losing money with every Wii-U sold at a minimum of $300, there's no way in hell Sony's much beefier system is retailing at that price. $300 might be the eventual price when sales start to pick up, but I expect a $400 initial price tag at the very least.SaltyMeatballs

Perhaps, but in addition to much more powerful hardware, the PS4 controller is getting a touchpad, speaker, and upgrades to the sixaxis and rumble. That has to drive the price of the SKU up, especially if they're still selling Dualshock 3's at $55 apiece.

People where actually not that far off the VITA's price when it was announced,

http://www.gamespot.com/forums/topic/27564262/ngp-to-cost-a-lot-more-than-250-?page=1

(Just about $50-$100 USD off the $250-$299 USD final version.)

p.s. The thread I linked to also illustrates "hype" and how much that matters.

Something tells me MS will launch a more powerful console at sub $300 price point, so Sony will want to stay competitive.

There is a reason Sony did not announce price, yet had a launch date.

I can't find anywhere in the actual quotes where reggie says anything contrary to what he has already said, or where the writer got the idea that what he said before was false.

Wait a sec. Is no one taking into consideration what I am saying?

MS will probably launch a more powerful console, at a sub $300 price.

That sets the market for competition and demand. PS4 being announced is one piece of the puzzle. IMO.

I read your comment, and I want to see MS's console before I guess the price. I heard they will try the 2 year subscription things they tested with Xbox 360, they could launch super cheap with 2 years of monthly payments.

Here's the article: http://www.mercurynews.com/top-stories/ci_22013695 In a story about Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime, Fils-Aime incorrectly said that Nintendo makes a profit on the Wii U console after consumers buy one piece of software. The number is more than one, but the company declined to say the exact number.

I can't find anywhere in the actual quotes where reggie says anything contrary to what he has already said, or where the writer got the idea that what he said before was false.

Considering they said that the Company I.E. Nintendo declined to say the exact number, I would guess they contacted Nintendo. The interview itself was with Reggie not the correction of his statement they updated later on the page.

Edit: If you have anything from Nintendo themselves that confirm what Reggie said, that would be awesome?

It's not even that. AMD and other manufacturers have supposedly lifted MS as a top priority (above Sony's PS4) and the Next Xbox parts are supposed to be better and more easy to manufacture. (Again, mound of salt!)

So, it's probably going to be a big battle for Sony (from MS) and their new console might need to be reall cheap to compete.

$400 & $500 SKUs is my guess.

$300 is just not gonna happen.
