Well, if you can't beat X1's powah, make a new console eh? :P

Seriously, I sure hope MS shows an upgraded X1 at E3, if not, it's really gonna get tough around here lol

I've yet to Await Greatness so this could be saweeetness for me. I'm a bit pumped to see what's offered with this and at what price. If The Price is Right, the SP could be a proud owner of the new Sony system and Awaiting Greatness with mah fellow cows, I know, I know, the horror right? :P

Thoughts?

The Story.

---

PlayStation 4.5 Is Real, Says Report

Hardware upgrade is referred to as "PlayStation 4K" and has been prototyped, reveals new report.

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-45-is-real-says-report/1100-6435972/

Reports that Sony is working on a more powerful PlayStation 4 are true, according Digital Foundry. The publication states it has independently verified a report published on March 18, which said the new version of the console will have an upgraded GPU.

According to the site, Sony's R&D labs have prototyped the device, which "more than once source" referred to as PlayStation 4K. It continues, however, to explain that although the hardware offers more graphics processing power, it is not enough to deliver a robust 4K gaming experience.

Digital Foundry posits that although the machine may be capable of playing "high-definition media" and some technical aspects of 4K spec gaming, such as high dynamic range, the hardware upgrade currently isn't significant enough to constitute a full step into 4K gaming.

Don’t panic. All it takes is a few simple tweaks to update your design and make your emails look great.

Constant Contact

It goes on to speculate on three viable upgrade paths for the PS4. The first involves making tweaks to existing off-the-shelf hardware to decrease the size of the console's microprocessor while increasing its power. This would leverage recent improvements AMD has made to its CPU and GPU technology.

The second involves "scaling up the existing [PS4] chip" and attaching some features that allow for select 4K features to be added on. The report notes that Sony must bear in mind potentially splitting the PS4's audience and development resources.

The final option is a slimmer PS4 that has been given "minor boosts to functionality." Take a look at the in-depth breakdown of each these in Digital Foundry's full report here.

The subject of an upgrade to the PS4 was previously discussed by Sony executive Masayasu Ito, who said the company might consider a "high-power" PS4.

The idea of a mid-generation hardware refresh has also been broached by Xbox head Phil Spencer. On March 1, Spencer said Microsoft is building towards a future where the Xbox will be upgradable. This would allow the company to incrementally increasing its power while retaining compatibility with its older games, instead of replacing consoles with an entirely new device.

I'd guess on the ps4 slim + 4k video functionality, still dont think a slightly more powerful ps4 is the way to go

@howmakewood: They have to to run VR good i hear. But then again, i heard the PS Camera and Move are outdated tech and dont pick up motion good. Im sure they will make new ones if thats the case, i dont believe the rumor that their using last gen tech, i think it might be false, maybe, maybe not. Or maybe they are cleaning last gen tech out of inventory.

Very bad idea. When you make games on PS4.5 then you can't play it on PS4. Nobody wants split console. Don't do that. This is not PC gaming. Big mistake.

Their selling point is that there are already ~40mil psvr ready devices out there, so this can't really be purely a vr thing

4K looks awesome when I see it on display in retail stores, I wonder if Sony does this if MS will do the same, I just recently had to get a new TV and got a really nice Sony Bravia, but if they both make the jump to 4K I'll be tempted to follow lol

Yeah, I bought a new 60" a couple years ago it's quite nice but not 4K. If this thing is real and I buy one, a new 4K TV I shall have. :D

It truly is, hoping Netflix would provide more 4K content than what it's currently offering, it is getting better tho and Daredevil s2 in 4K is no joke. I have no regrets of buying 4k TV a year back as they really aren't that pricy anymore

edit: and if you meant 4K games then most likely isn't coming to consoles quite yet

I thought the rumor stated it wasnt 4K gaming. This seems like just for VR since its rumored PS4 cant run it good.

I say the same ^^ probably a 4k video capable PS4,but since it is a refresh maybe sony can active the full R270 inside the PS4 and give it a 2 CU boost, with probably a little faster clock speed increase.

Will only care if it adds a significant boost to the system. Don't care about 4k video capabilities.

I know that dude is the reason i say 4k VIDEO and not gaming unlocking the full R270 inside the PS4 will not do that much.

@thedork_knight Marvelous and when you consider it's streamed you come to notice how much streaming services have advanced over the years(you obv need 30mbit+ connection too), even the normal 1080p streams from netflix look a lot better than what your avg television channels offer you

"4k spec gaming". My as*. Would be surprised if high end games even touch 1440p at 60fps. Let alone 4k. Let's over hype the hardware again... like always.

Well, I'll still have the X1 and it's awesome offering of games. Right now my anticipation for QB is sky high.

Still, should I nab one of these PS4.5, I dunno what game other than perhaps UC4 that I really want for the system?

We shall see. If MS offers a X1.9 lol and it's more powerful than PS4.5, all bets are off. :P

(Copy/Paste for what I said on that lousy article written by Eddie Makuch)

In other words, "in theory" according to this article that I got from. Until I officially hear this coming from Sony themselves, I'm NOT gonna comment further on this theory until Sony say otherwise.

Lol...seriously...why bother with consoles if you want top tier performance.

Just buy a good pc and you'll be way ahead of consoles for years. The pc i built two years ago would still probly be twice as powerful as the new ps4k

I have a decent PC that can do 4k resolution but I'm waiting on my new power supply to come in because mine died on me when trying to game onight my tv.

Don't think anyone would care about a 4k ready PS4 for movies. If you make the hardware so it performs better on games I've a feeling it will annoy a rather large % of the base.

Ye I think 400$ is the price point most can bare with consoles, which is a bit stretch if sony wanted to release a truly 4k gaming capable ps and not sell it at loss

It will be upgraded GCN hardware. Maybe a 7950/280 equivelent so it can hit 1080p 60fps on all games. That would be the most cost effective and give the platform a much needed boost

I personally NOT interested in 4K at all. Blu-Ray is as good as it can be, I'm totally fine gaming in 1440p on PC, and don't see myself going 4K anytime soon. Sony should just focus on games only and we can talk about this 4K on consoles in the distant future.

Honestly for pure gaming a 1080p tv is still better as upscaling the game to 4k does not make it look better, you also need to make sure your tv supports hdmi 2.0 else you are stuck on 30fps and the 4k tv's tend to have higher input latencies

I seriously love the idea of upgrading the consoles as long as just like PC's, you can still play all the games on the original lower power system just at lower settings.

Man, think of the possibilities just for SW where you could have infighting within factions. For instance, if I were to get PS4.5 I could post pics of mah UC4 running 1440P 60fps and laugh at my fellow cows who only have the PS4 running it at 900P 30fps.. lol

If it does 4k gaming and full resolution that makes games look better then I'm all in but since this sounds like it's going to be gimped right off the bat and won't be able to do that, then I'll pass. What's the point of making a 4k gaming console if it can't do full 4k gaming, that makes no sense to me.

@SecretPolice: i don't know what to make of it all really. the eurogamer article is worth a read if you are into all that RAM and gigaflops bullshit.

Higher GFLOPS doesn't necessarily mean better performance in games. It means that it can crunch more numbers per second.

For example, these two video cards are very close in terms of price and performance:

GTX 980 -> 4.6TFLOPS, Radeon R9 Nano -> 8.2TFLOPS. Nearly twice the 'power' right? Well, in real world tests, the Nano only outperforms the 980 by about 5% and even then, it is heavily dependent on the game itself. With some games, the 980 pulls ahead.

4k gaming on consoles is a pipe dream right now. It would be impossible to produce a 4k machine within a budget that would be marketable.
