Xbox Boss Finds Console Wars Debate "Distasteful"

Please stop, you're upsetting Phil.

by Tamoor Hussain on September 23, 2015

Microsoft's head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, has said he feels the ongoing console-versus-console-feud raging rampant in online forums, comment sections, and social networks is something he finds "distasteful."

Speaking in an interview with GameSpot, Spencer was asked, in light of his success shifting the focus back to games on the Xbox One, what he'd like to tackle next and what keeps him up at night.

"I've said before, the one thing that I probably find a little distasteful in the discourse around games is the divisiveness that people try to build between platforms," he replied.

"It becomes more about what piece of plastic I own than what games I'm playing. It becomes more about somebody else failing than the things I love succeeding. I don't think that's a good place for our industry."

The Xbox exec noted that not everyone is partaking in their arguments but, nevertheless, it is a part of the gaming industry that he is actively interested in combating.

"I know that's not everybody, and it's easy to find the pockets of that vitriol and I kind of think that that is gaming, but I'm not going to embrace that. I'm going to actively push against that," he said.

Spencer's affable nature and willingness to directly praise his competitors has become one of the defining characteristics of his leadership. In the past he has congratulated Sony on the success of its PS4 exclusive Bloodborne, shown support for Nintendo's new CEO, and brokered deals with Oculus.

This, Spencer says, doesn't get in the way of his mission to make Xbox One the best video game platform it can be.

"People sometimes will make fun of me that I mentioned Sony or I mentioned Nintendo," he said. "It's not to placate anybody or make them think I'm some kind of good guy.

"My job isn't really to keep you from buying something else. My job is to make you proud of what we offer, and to give you an enjoyable experience with the product we have. That's 100% of what I'm focused on."

Elsewhere in the interview Spencer said he believes Halo has the same staying power as entertainment juggernauts such as Star Wars and Spider-Man, but requires managing to ensure it isn't overexposed.

@sts106mat: Don almost took down the Xbox brand down with his stance on DRM among other things on that year at E3.

Phil is much more positive and is moving xbox brand towards a better future. Glad that schmuck is gone.

I don't think I've ever read your opinions on the future of VR and AR. Is that the future, do you think? Are games heading inevitably down that path where that technology is an essential part of what we do with gaming?

Well, now it's just my opinion. I'll say, obviously we have relationships with Valve, we have a relationship with Oculus around the VR work that they're doing, but I'm going to say I kind of hope not. It doesn't mean I don't think VR has great experiences to offer. I think it does, and we'll find those, and people will love playing those. I love playing games in my family room with my kids. I love people coming together and watching what's happening on screen and laughing, and the kind of fun of what video games were always about. That doesn't mean that can't happen in a kind of socially connected VR environment, but to me it would be too bad if all gaming became people with head mounted displays on, headphones on, kind of blocked out from everything that happens. I do think there'll be great experiences there, but just kind of for the sake of what gaming is, I don't think that should be the only way people play.

I think there will be certain experiences where that's perfect. I don't know necessarily if it will be genre based, but I just love me watching you play Mario and giving you ideas about where things might be, and we laugh, and we can kind of sit around and eat chips, and do things that people do. I think that's kind of the basis of what gaming is about. I think there's a place for VR. I think it's really cool to see the innovation, like many innovations in the past. Gaming is taking a role in the forefront, because VR will touch more things than just gaming. Holograms and AR I think is a more complex space, but again, you're going to find games will be there really stretching the technology like they have in so many other areas.

I've said before, the one thing that I probably find a little distasteful in the discourse around games is the divisiveness that people try to build between platforms. It becomes more about what piece of plastic I own than what games I'm playing. It becomes more about somebody else failing than the things I love succeeding. I don't think that's a good place for our industry. I know that's not everybody, and it's easy to find the pockets of that vitriol and kind of think that that is gaming, but I'm not going to embrace that. I'm going to actively push against that. My job isn't really to keep you from buying something else. My job is to make you proud of what we offer, and to give you an enjoyable experience with the product we have. That's 100% of what I'm focused on.

What other corporate president would've said that???

The console wars are stupid. Playstation 4 and Xbox One are the exact same platform. They're slightly different shades of the same color. They're also both extremely anti-consumer, designed at their core as a platform for big businesses to rip-off their customers.

Go to PC if you want a pro-consumer open platform that encourages creativity and community. Go to Wii-U if you want fun console games. Go to PS4 / Xbone if you want to be sold overpriced garbage focus tested to appeal to a wide (and dumb!) demographic.

I agree completely, the "console war" thing is just dumb on all side. But whatever console you want and game. None of us works for MS, Sony or Nintendo. We don't get a portion of the sales for any of these consoles or games sold so why do people even care how many units what console sold. We have no stock investments so it doesn't matter. Lets just make sure they treat us right and give us the games we want, period...............end of story.

To be honest I don't understand the console wars thing for many people, It's funny to take the piss out of Nintendo because they make some really wacko choices.

Me I just don't like Microsoft as a company because they didn't get where they are today by playing "the good guy". You know once they gain a monopoly in anything they stop trying and it hurts the industry. Look at IE and Windows for example, after they gained such a market share they stopped trying and started doing some really fucking awful anti-consumer things.

People also forget their Xbox Live service predecessor, MSN which they bundled with Windows. They wanted everyone to subscribe to that service rather than using the conventional internet service, so glad that failed badly or else everyone would be paying Microsoft for using the internet.

**** them, I wont ever willingly give them my money for anything.

He's exactly right.

Spots like this at Gamespot are cancers to the industry.

But they make money and Gamespot has to keep the lights on so they do it.

how are you going to argue that americans dont use the word commonly? just because you don't hear it in your circle of friends? Or are you are tuned in to the entire population 24/7.

man why do you create holy **** about everything? let it go.
