just wondering which style of RPG do you prefer? personally i prefer the WRPG i find the JRPG style of gaming too restricted (although i still enjoy it)

thats the "lazy answer", usually inquiries do not have a middle answer because thats what people will choose when they are unsure, this way i am actually forcing you to make a choice (hey i just described a WRPG)
Choices that don't actually make much of a difference in the end since most WRPGs only give a weak story and the illusion of choice?
JRPG.

WRPG. Fallout FTW!RobbieH1234
Yes ftw indeed, lets hope that Bethesda gives us a decent return to the franchise or at the very least a good base to be modded into decency.

Nothing lazy about it. I don't care what style it is. As long as it is a solid RPG then I'm down.[QUOTE="Pietrooper"][QUOTE="st1ka"][QUOTE="Tenudin"]Where's the "I like both equally" option?st1ka

Fallout, Morrowind, Oblivion, Kotor 1/, NVN 1, NVN2, Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate II, Jade Empire, Oblivon, Daggerfall, Mass Effect, Fable, the Witcher and so on..
Most of them don't give you any real choice.
Except Fallout 1 and 2, that's just downright great.

Its not just the ending that your choices influence. Take BGII for example. Your decisions, actions and interactions with your party have very significant in game consquences. In KOTOR 1 & 2 your actions throughout the game also have a major impact on the ending.
Just a couple of examples ...

It was still very scripted, you had very few lanes you could go down. Now fallout..that was a game with a range of choices.
This has been done to death. WRPGs always win these polls (I prefer JRPGs personally but I suppose I'm not surprised). WRPGs tend to have far superior gameplay, but I have found that Japanese developers have almost always been able to create much deeper stories. Western developers focus on customization and letting gamers forge their own way through the game whereas Japanese developers go for a much more static experience where you are just along for the ride. While JRPGs are more "boring" because of the limited action involved in playing, the story can be much more robust because the characters and enviroment completely in the control of the creator.
For example, imagine J.K. Rowling trying to create a Harry Potter book where you choose what you want Harry to do. It would be really fun and much more intereactive, but the story would take a hit because there is no singular mind driving the story.
While they don't have to be exclusive (Bioware is a good example), between gameplay vs. story in an RPG, I choose story.

lets take oblivion and favle out of that list, im not even sure if they should be called WRPGs
NWN 1 had great choices, wheter its the expansions or the mods, (mods are the best part of the game)
NWN 2 sucked, its expansion redeemed the game
Fallout, Planescape torment, Baldur´s gate no choice? what the hell? in baldur´s gate your friends can get permantly killed.. and quite easilly too i might add
i havent played the witcher nor jade empire so i cant comment on that one
your right about mass effect, it had few choices
its not just about different endings, most games have the same ending no matter what you do, but that doesnt mean its freedom is shallow, far from it

I find a story is more important in an RPG than choices, and JRPGs tend to have a more solid story. At least some of them, alot of them share the same rough line of stories but you get some originality. Not saying I hate either but I just prefer JRPGs :D

If I want an awesome story I'll read a book, I find almost all JRPG stories rather contrived personally. For me when I play a video game I want great game play, of course the story is important as a driving force too, but its very much secondary.I find a story is more important in an RPG than choices, and JRPGs tend to have a more solid story. At least some of them, alot of them share the same rough line of stories but you get some originality. Not saying I hate either but I just prefer JRPGs :D

iv played shining force, you can revive your characters as for Fire emblem your right i forgot about that one, but i believe there is an overall diference, since fire emblem is a strategy RPG, i mean sure you cant do some optional missions and your army will get smaller (im thinking fo the GBA versions) but the impact on a perma death on a normal RPG (JRPG or WRPG) IMO is much greater, because now you may not compeltle a multitude of side quests, you might fail many side quests because that character was important for them over all i think the impact is much greater, specially since most of the people of your army in the 2 fire emblem games iv played was mostly formed by generic and expendable characters, only 5 or 6 of them were actually important and half of them couldnt die or you would loose the game.
in a WRPG anyone and i mean anyone can die and the game goes on, so long as YOU dont die the game goes on

How does following a subpar story with a few inconsequencial choices roleplaying?
This can happen in some JRPGs to you know. Nintendos Fire Emblem franchise and possibly Shining force on Mega Drive if my memory don't play tricks in my mind.
JLF1
Not Shining Force. You get to resurrect after each battle.
For me, my best RPG memories have been WRPG's (Baldur's Gate 2 in particular) so I picked that in the poll, but I also enjoy a large number of JRPG's.

that is true, although as petrooper said fallout is the exception, fallout is... a true RPG experience, the amount of choice in that game is...staggering, every point you add to your character will have a diferent effect in your conversations the choices in that game....well i cant even begin to explain it

Any roleplaying game (including pen and paper) has a story which you are going to follow eventually, with varying degrees of meandering. However, its the ability to chose how your character acts, good, evil or a mixture of both, the type of character you want to play, interaction with NPC's and the ability to influence the story (both in minor and major ways depending on the game) that is roleplaying for me. Essientially your ability to make your own stamp on your character, how he/she plays and the game itself.st1ka
