Anyone who discounts the likes of Baldur's Gate, Planescape and Fallout instantly discredit themselves of having ANY real knowledge on the quality of RPGs.

In your opinion.
WRP. Creat your own character as you see fit, more open ended worlds, and generally have better themes IMO.
I've never been a fan of the JRPG scene. Most of the stories are too cliched and the characters are set in stone, something I don't think really represents what a TRUE RPG should be about.
I want to play the role I WANT, not be forced to play a preset one.

JRPG = Archaic turn based system. Great for a few chucks but gets very tedious. Endless cut scenes to justify its huge disk size.
All the male characters are effeminate and all the women are showing some skin of some sort under clothes that are unbelievably silly......lol. It has a linear structure. Oh and endless sequels. Where is the ingenuity??? And yes big effeminate with humongous swords....I mean come on. Oh yeah and dodgy yank voice acting.
WRPG = Full of ogres, orcs and wizards. Where would it be without tolkein?? living in yesteryear with only the elder scrolls series actually modernising the immersion. There is so much but as i am playing Baldurs gate 2 i must continue my quest.
They both have Pixies...
The same could be said about JRPGs. Until you have played one Final Fantasy, Grandia, Star Ocean, Phantasy star (Not the online games), Riviera, Fire Emblem, Dark Cloud or Atlus game you shouldn't judge this sub-genre either. JLF1
I'm not judging anything. I've played most of those games plus plenty of others. I've played many JRPGs and WRPGs. There are classics on both sides of the coin. Games like the ones I named are good. Saying they arent is just silly. They may not be your style, but if you've really spent any time with them then you cannot discredit that fact. I'll be the first to say that FF7 is great.....i'll also say that Planescape torment is great too. Unlike most people in this thread, i've walked both sides

wrpg's were first... i like wrpg's cause they're the true rpg's. the point of an rpg is to make the character think like you. you are role-playing. not just watching a story. jrpg's are fun, but they aren't true rpg's.... they're action adventure games.

thats the "lazy answer", usually inquiries do not have a middle answer because thats what people will choose when they are unsure, this way i am actually forcing you to make a choice (hey i just described a WRPG)
Choices that don't actually make much of a difference in the end since most WRPGs only give a weak story and the illusion of choice?
JRPG.
play mass effect, kotor, fallout, morrowind, baldurs gate, and nwn. then get back to me.
Like I said i'm going to try some others, but the style and characteristics of a WRPG don't seem to suite my tastes, and JRPG is pretty much my favorite genre so it will take a lot to dethrone it.@f50p90 - Judging your WRPG experience on Oblivion is like judging all cars by a 1989 Hyundai Hatchback

Oblivion isn't a very good exaple of a wrpg tho it basically removed all the rp in favour of bloom and no difficulty.

I sure hope so. But the game got such great reception I figured it would be a good intro to the genre, and I was so turned away. I read people putting 1-200 hours on it. In the time I owned it i only put about 15 :? It was that boring to meWestern RPGs overall, but they have to have been exclusive to PC, not been shared with Xbox or they are automatically dumbed down for the simpleton Xbox crowd.
If we speak only consoles, I say JRPGs, but the WRPGs are dumbed down on Xbox, while JRPGs are generally still as deep as they are supposed to be.

Most JRPG prefer to fairytale-like stories which make me feel comfortable and hot-blooded as if I was back to my youthhood, and some other ones like the Xenogears and the Xenosaga series move me a lot.I`ve been used to ATB battle, but the Tales of XXX series also offer a great battle of manual that make me feel just like I`m playing a FTG
JRPGs but only because they have set characters and pretty much a set story. It makes it easier to get pulled into the game. Since almost all WRPGs are open ended (and I use that term loosely here) and have you create your character it's a little harder for me to care about what actually happens.Tiefster
I agree with this post.
The have played my fair share of JRPG's, and WRPG's. The only games that i have seen with any real roleplaying are MMORPG's.
WRPG lovers just like acting elitist.

If you want borderline racist, fully sexist, exploitative point whoring emo punk lame chudd then by all means scoff down the mindless scewed storylines with as many potions as the people who bought the game, coupled with characters drew up with the same framework of allegory and mundanety so the game will get 40/40 from Famitsu and nerds everywhere will drool gallons over sopping great chesty facilities strapped to the front of every female character who also looks about five and really likes wearing short skirts.
I like oblivion.

Nice opinion, I find odd that those games use the same engine maybe u don't like the games just the technology they are based off of?:P:DJK
I will take wrpgs over jrpgs any day of the week. I liked oblivion and ppl need to top saying its a dumbed down Morrwind, play ES:II: daggerfall plz, way better, Morrwind in a way is the worst due to its combat. Besides ES:IV is more like a action/adv so I don't compare it to the others.

Oblivion is one of the most over-rated games out there.. Putting its past games out of the picture, the game has literally the weakest rpg elements out there for a game to claim to be a top rpg game.. character development is non existent.. Really the only thing you can choose from that makes a difference is your appearance and birth sign.. Thats it.. Skill choice is useless because in the end they will be all maxed out.. No consquences, No real dialogue choice, no real story to speak of, numerous logic pitfalls, a boring and SCALED difficulty, a boring and SCALED item system..
Also would like to say NWN2 is another over-rated one.. Besides running worse then Crysis on most machines, it is another immensely linear game with no real freedom.. NWN1 was bashed for its linearity.. But at least you can choose to go to huge amount of areas.. IN NWN2 you are funneled down a train tracks of events.. I can only think of a handful of times I actually had the choiec to go to some place completely optional.. Even then it was entirelly too short those side quests.. Top that off the AI is brain dead in every way possible.. You can't have spell caster even have a AoE spell with AI or they will be just as sure to killing you as the enemy.. The enemy cheats on top of this, apparently their AoE spells do not hurt their comrades.. But mind hurt my team mates even on hardcore settings? Last but not least the game was entirely too easy.. The majority of times my monk just ran in and destroyed everything with out any real change in battle strategy.
Story wise-JRPG
Gameplay wise-WRPG
Oblivion had like no story what so ever but awesome gameplay while most FF games have great stories but usually subpar gameplay.
I don't like the use of DnD which IMO makes most WRPG's a bad experience. It feels like all the action is happening in behind the scenes number crunching and what I'm doing has little to do with what is actually happening :?
WRPG's tend to have absolutely no regard for presentation either, frequently ignoring the need to keep a stable framerate of any kind. I do find a good WRPG every now and then, like right now I am playing the Witcher. But could I get into Morrowind or NWN? Probably not as there is a distinct lack of direction or sense of what you are supposed to be doing.
Although JRPGs appeal to me more, I would have to say in terms of actual decent final products the count is largely the same on both fronts.
[QUOTE="Willy105"]Willy Is Right, Those were the correct words.JRPG.

nop, your both wrong, look up role play then lets talk, JRPG or WRPG is a matter of preference and i respect that, but saying that JRPGs are the true RPG experience couldnt be farther from the truth, its like saying GTA is the true F1 racing sim
st1ka, neither offers a "role play" experience. If I want role play, I do p&p. These games are named "rpg" because they use a more or less strategic combat system based on character stats, which is borrowed from Pen&Paper. Hence (J/W)RPG. The "jRPGs don't offer role play"-argument is therefore complete bs. Technically speaking, both JRPG and WRPG are "Strategy Action/Adventure" games.
Not to mention that Character creation + illusion of choice =/= role play.

they dont offer a true Role play experience, but games like fallout get very near because of how you create your character, what you can do with him, how you follow the story and the overall freedom, it is not the true rpg experience but it tries to emulate it and it is (somewhat) sucessfull at it. JRPGS do not try to emulate it at all, they are called RPG because of a certain afinity with the JRPG
Character creation + illusion of choice =/= role play, Emulation =\= real life
emulation = something close to ... (insert name here)
Alright, WRPGs sometimes try more or less succesful to emulate the roleplaying experience; but... why? For me, the fun in P&P is the strategic combat, shaping the story myself, and the acting. All three these things WRPGs do not offer, instead they spend all their ressources on character creation (which is fun, granted, but kills the story) and mission-based gameplay (which is fun, but kills the story) and an open world (which is fun, but kills the story). Plus the get rid of strategic combat by making it realtime. Even Baldur's Gate II, while being as close to "real" D&D as any game can get, felt broken to me because of the combat.
Now JRPGs. They spend all their ressources on story (which tend to be cheesy, I give you that), character development (dependant on the game) and, once you're 3-4 hours into the game and it has introduced you to all the combat elements, fantastic turn-based strategy in the shape of combat encounters. Fantastic.

WRPGs don't offer strategic combat, shaping of the story, or acting cut scenes?
Methinks you need to play more WRPGs before you go spouting your opinion.
