And with "shaping of the story" I meant not being restricted in any way in my possibilites, and making up the story as I go along with my party (consisting of humans).

I'd take a good WRPG over a good JRPG anyday.

Alright, WRPGs sometimes try more or less succesful to emulate the roleplaying experience; but... why? For me, the fun in P&P is the strategic combat, shaping the story myself, and the acting. All three these things WRPGs do not offer, instead they spend all their ressources on character creation (which is fun, granted, but kills the story) and mission-based gameplay (which is fun, but kills the story) and an open world (which is fun, but kills the story). Plus the get rid of strategic combat by making it realtime. Even Baldur's Gate II, while being as close to "real" D&D as any game can get, felt broken to me because of the combat.

Now JRPGs. They spend all their ressources on story (which tend to be cheesy, I give you that), character development (dependant on the game) and, once you're 3-4 hours into the game and it has introduced you to all the combat elements, fantastic turn-based strategy in the shape of combat encounters. Fantastic.

Lothenon

well you didnt need to write all that, you basically answered your self

For meLothenon

it is a matter of personal opinion, and i completly respect that, i have never played P&P, not because i dont want, simply because i dont know how and i dont know anyone else to play with, i guess this is what theses games are for, games will never completly give you the feel of role play (not offline games anyway) but like i said they try to bring you the closest as possible.

i understand your opinion, and i understand anyone who prefers the JRPGS over WRPGS but i cant understand when someone says that JRPGS are the true RPG experience, because for starters... they are not even trying, its not their goal, their goal it to tell a story, while WRPGs goal is to give you freedom, these things are not mutually exclusive (altough it is dificult to have both)

i dont own fallout nor planescape, i keep searching for them, but they are impossible to find (note no account on steam and no online shopping for me)

You should check Best Buy or circuit city or some place that sells those 10 dollar jewel case games. There is one that comes with both Fallout games, and another that sells Planescape with a crap RPG called Soulbringer.

No, MCP, I meant acting. Real acting. As in, myself acting out a character.

Lothenon

Are you saying JRPGs allow you to do this? Because almost every JRPG I've ever played only allows me to change the name of the character and I have to watch what the game developers have already decided. I'm not acting out any character at all. Unlike KOTOR where I was able to choose my Jedi's destiny, the good or evil path, unlike Baldur's Gate where picking certain henchmen changed the game events dramatically, or the Elder Scrolls series where I could act out my character, pursue separate life events, and achieve the game ending with so many different paths: Ninja assassin, weak mage, tough barbarian, etc....

sorry, no best buy or circuit city in my country, WRPGs are a niche title, so they are always somewhat hard to find, 10 year old WRPGs are even harder to find, 10 year old niche RPGs on a nation with only 10,5 million people means that its almost impossible to find, so now you see my predicament :´(

st1ka: No, I have absolutely no problem with people enjoying WRPGs. I was not the one who said JRPGs were the only true RPG experience! I've had my share of fun with WRPGs!

The_MCP: No! JRPGs cannot offer these things, no videogames can! That's my point: Neither JRPGs nor WRPGS are "real" RPGs for me, they're Storydriven Strategic ActionAdventures. WRPGs for me emphasizes the word "Action", wheres JRPGs emphasize the word "Storydriven" and "strategic". Of course it's all personal preference!

I don't think they've sold those bargain bin packages of Fallout and Planescape in years. At least I haven't seen them and I always flip through PC ten dollar bargain bins because you can find so many great titles.

never said you did :) im just saying Wrpgs are the closer we will ever get, by the way what were your thought on the online of Neverwinter nights? to me that game was the best role play experience i ever had, you could download programs and change your characters apearance, you could record your own voice and add it to your character for its emotes and you could create your own adventures and some of them were of incredibly high quality

I don't know, for me it's all so pointless. Video games cannot offer the real deal, but what they can do is take your hand and at least let you experience a thought-out, wonderfully told story; that's the one really important thing many JRPGs deliver, and many WRPGs don't. Changing my characters appearence? Record my own voice? That's all very gimmicky to me.

WRPGs. They are all unique from one another. JRPGs all look the same to me.

TheDarkDisciple

Could've fooled me...I can walk into HMV and see all the games looking like expansions of one series with names like "quest" "fantasy" and normally some random elf-chick/orc/tough looking slayer of the aforementioned etc; if you can't notice a trend when you look at the games you'd have to be blind. Of course not all games follow that formula but then that works both ways. Fanboys of either one would have to be blind to not admit that the genres are both in stagnation, and no Mass Effect doesn't prove me wrong because it was exceptional precisely because it was an exception, not a trend.

The thread has also pointed out that JRPG's don't let you actually play the role of the main character in most cases which is true, but as to whether that is a bad thing or not I can't say.

For immersion, JRPGs ain't great. For a well told story, 90% of the time JRPGs > WRPGs.

I prefer JRPG's as they are what i've come to know as a "traditional console RPG". that isn't to say I don't enjoy WRPG's, I just tend to prefer the JRPG style/tradition a bit more. This is a good poll though. really close.

WRPG.

Ultima. Daggerfall. Fallout. Masquerade Bloodlines. Mass Effect.

These goldies are put up against a thousand-times re-hashed genre that's infested with effeminet(sp) and metrosexual characters.

The only ones I even remotely liked were Final Fantasy VIII (the one that everyone seemed to hate) and Knights of Xentar.

JRPG.

It's the TRUE RPG.

st1ka

actually no its not, JRPG do not have roleplay, they are called RPG for simplification purposes, but adventure game or action adventure would be a better name.

jrpg: play the role of a character in a story. role-playing

wrpg: create a character, quest arount huge immersive enviroments. adventure

I only like JRPG because of the story but the game play for most of this style is trash, meanwhile WRPGs have good game play but suck in story sometimes.

so Diablo is technically a JRPG because of its linear development of plot?

THen JRPG wins for sure. Too many to list.

J-J-J-J-J Unit.

Guess for me it is JRPg for the simple fact I played more jrpg than wrpg and the story is better. But I can't say I hate WRPG, Oblivion is realy great as is Diablo and so on.
