I wonder if the orange jumpsuit is bundled with it.

MKLOL

I lold , but I bet the jumpsuit is just a temporary thing...

It has to do with lighting. I've worked with cameras and studio lighting all my career and I can tell you right now, if they didn't have those jumpsuits on, Natal's image sensor would be going crazy.

Now to anyone who starts saying, "SO UNDER CERTAIN LITES U HAV @ WEAR A JUMPSUIT LOL FAIL" understand that studio lighting is vastly different than any consumer grade bulbs, and unless you dished out $10,000 for a single light in your room, you shouldn't worry about it.

Good job failing to note the quote is a good chunk of the article, and not all of it negative. It would be easy to assing a lot of funtions to voice input, but then I woul only need a mic to do that.

Gxgear

why not just use the one built into the camera... you know, the one that can actually recognize different peoples voices...

why didnt you quote the part where he said it controlled better than the standard controller?

Because I'm pointing out the doubts and potential pitfalls, I'm obviously not here to agree with you or joing the parade of lemmings lapping it all up.

"doubts and potential pitfalls"? You are ready to condemn this thing before it even gets a freaking name... "lapping it up"? Im sorry if I can see potential in this.

It seems to me that most of the people that are against this Natal thing seem to imply that it has soo many shortcomings and that it will never work because it doesn't work with the types of games we are soo used to playing. Also, they seem to imply that it will somehow make the games we currently play with our current controlers obsolete. Look guys...This is supposed to be something anyone can play, but not the be all end all of gaming. 2D gaming still exists, RTS games are still alive and well, old classics can still be played, and motion-based games are going to be just another way to enjoy videogames (not the ONLY way)...

also, at the end of the interview they said that you DIDNT need the jumpsuits they were just for show.... i watched that show last night, they said that after the commercial

I dont understand how people can be excited for this, it screams gimmick. If anyone has played motorstorm using the sixaxis motion as a stearing wheel will know how gimmicky it is, sure it works, and is fun to mess around when friends are over for about 10 mins, but you will go back to normal controls right after and never do it again. This can work out for a few games, but for the most part its screaming gimmick.

[QUOTE="Jrfanfreak88"][QUOTE="verbalfilth"]I was watching Craig Ferguson. =) anyways, on topic: MS can publicize this thing all they want...but in the end of the day I see natal failing....why? because it isn't a compulsory/main feature of the xbox 360 like motion controls is to the wii... I see it ending up like the eye toy...but that's just one man's opinion.fourseamer4

Agreed. I think 360 owners may treat Natal like they did the HD-DVD add on, just with a bit higher adoption. Natal will need a good selection of games before it is widely adopted and by that time we might have the next iteration of the xbox.

You're crazy if you don't think MS won't bundle this with a new SKU. Project NATAL with an XBOX 360 and a game that uses the camera and it'll sell for people wanting it for motion capablities. Guarantee.

but it will cost more than a wii. Natal will not sweep away the motion crowd from Nintendo. Casuals already proved they dont care for hd graphics and all that other hoopla 360 offers.. Also, Wii has tons of games that works with the controller and was built for it since day one.. MS is LATE.

Wow MS is really trying to push this tech and get it noticed. Personally I dont think its gonna take off seeing as how its a secondary peripheral for gaming unlike the Wii. Who knows maybe MS are testing this tech with 360 and if users like it then they may go fully Natal next gen with no controller what-so-ever :o

BTW controller-less computer gaming is totally fail for me, I just cant imagine it being practical when playing games like Tekken, Metal Gear solid etc. I know Natal is gonna have its own unique games but I cant see it being intergrated well with current controller based games without any problems. For the record Controller> Motion controller>Natal. Funny how self-proclaimed hardcore Xbox gamers are so giddy over Natal, I bet they would just love to use it for Halo :D

I don't know, the Burnout Paradise demo was amazing

Couth_
Yeah but how are you going to be able to tell the car to go 50% throttle? What I saw was the guys just stepped forward and the car went forward the same speed each time. I don't see how the camera is going to be able to accurately track how much throttle people are going to want to give to the car. Until then racing games are going to be pretty weak without a controller.

The thing is still a prototype isn't it? The demo's right now are more of what they can do. Not what it will do. Optimizing it for games you will probably get better results

Sure but I mean come on lets think about it, how is Natal going to tell how much people are pushing the gas pedal? Will people have to sit on the couch with their foot out and change the angle their foot is? Is the software smart enough to measure different foot sizes and tell what angle the foot is at? I just don't see how it could work. The steering is an awesome concept and seems to work well but you steer the car with the throttle just as much as you do the steering wheel.

Using Natal for driving sims is by FAR the most immersion "breaking" concept ever (other concepts seem decent, but are mostly concentrated on casuals).

It is just another way to play games...Why does everyone act as if MS is promoting it as the only way to play the 360 going forward? As far as I know it will be packaged with every 360 in addition to the 360 controler and a headset and an ethernet cable. Therefore everyone can enjoy casual gaming, online gaming, and games as we have been playing right out of the box.

So there's he gave both positive and negative feedback...your point?

What I see here is a device that is capable of projecting a person's simple movements into the game without some sort of physical controller.

I don't see how it can play Burnout better than say a steering wheel...just imagine how sore your arms would be after holding it out for so long.

NATAL is being positioned as another motion control gimmick device. The controls will not be that responsive or precise but will sell tons.

I remember when the Wii motion controls was first introduced, the same thing happened, some people were amazed, some people thought it was a gimmick and was inaccurate and such, but it in the end it caught on in the media and now the Wii motion controls can be found in hosipitals, shown in tv shows and such. I don't think the Natal is designed or set to replace the traditional Xbox 360 controllers, it's just a nice option to play a game or two.

If the Natal doesn't become successful, guess what, the Xbox 360 would still be fine, just like when HD-DVD failed but didn't affect the 360. And if the Natal becomes successful, I don't think the Xbox 360 will suddenly become more casual and just cater the casuals. They have more "hardcore" gamers on any systems except the PC.

I just hope they release Natal with some kind of controller that either can track finger movements, or has a few buttons... or both, could be A LOT cooler that way, especially if it tracked a few individual finger movements (not the useless little finger though... I just noticed finger is a really weird word)

Movement would be the main issue for platforming, what with all the jumping around and running.

thats why I would use a controller in conjunction w/ the camera...I hope most devs take that route..

depending on the genre you could pick and choose which feature built into natal to take advantage of...Not everything in natal will work for every genre, but some things could really benefit them...natal isnt just a motion device. The voice and facial recognition have many possibilities. Plus, the motion could be implemented in certain ways like relegating camera control to head movement...

Here's one: how abot I play with a controller?

Sorry I get annoyed when people try to defend ideas that is obviously going after sales rather than being a good product.

Gxgear

I really dont care what you do. You are obviously going to throw down any idea put forward. If ms wanted this purely fro sales they would have tried to push it out this fall. Instead they are waiting until the software support is there. You notice how they havent given any release date? Thats b/c they are prepared to wait until they have quality...

Or maybe, just maybe, that no one will buy it when you can't use it to play anything. Why would Natal need software support when it's suppose to enchance the user's gaming experience?

You know what, you're just coming off as ignorant (I don't know if its intentional and I'm not trying to flame here).

The interface has potential, its still very early on and has tons of room to improve and be creative. For starters, there is potential for head tracking. Did any of you see that video where the guy had the Wiimote hooked up to a PC and as he moved his head, his perspective changed?

This would be perfect for thet, being able to lean and look round corners!

There is nothing wrong with using this technology to enhance existing controls. Again, calling such ideas as half baked in my opinion is being really narrow minded. Competitive players who like online FPSs for example arn't going to be interested in this.

Its one thing to recognise this technology has a way to go but its another to blatantly hate every single thing the MS tries to do with the 360. I'm a hermit more than anything and I have to say I have never seen these boards so 'anti-MS' before, especially from the low post count cows that seem to have flooded these boards recently who just attack and flame anything MS.

What is the difference between this and eyetoy?illegalimigrant

  • Stereo cameras that can see you in 3D and not just a 2D shape
  • The additional hardware purpose built to run the software required for the cameras
  • Specific software that recognises 3D shapes and movement in real-time
  • Voice recognition

None are in themselves new, (like motion controls weren't for the Wii) but its Microsofts intention to develop this kind of interface, their ideas and the potential.

It'll be awesome for smaller creative games. The guys on the show were amazed with it.

BioShockOwnz
Well honestly, they *have* to be exited for it, them being presenters and all. Nonetheless, it was a good showing.
