Okay, so how many kickstarter projects actually took off and sold over millions? Yes some ideas are "interesting" but there are some that are not worth the investment. I could practically do all those "promised" features on a desktop PC. There has to be a reason why business investors think that it isn't worth the money, especially when the market of console gaming is still huge.
You gonna have to donate more to this project in order for it to sell.

Phantom was a whole different era in terms of social networking. Not ripping the concept, the DD model, or the lapboard. All of which I thought were decent ideas. However, let's get real. The Phantom flopped before it even got out of the gates. This is a whole different beast thanks to Kickstarter and the enthuasist gaming populace of the web, whom I suspect are of likemind as those who support indie gaming, linux, and open-source in general.
The story here is a daring idea from one woman and a dedicated team of designers. It's focus is on migrating the collective might of the surging mobile market segment into the living room. Open platform coupled with standardized hardware. It's pleasing gamecube-like appearence is a plus, but as was said in the pitch video, it's all about the controller. That's the big f*cking difference here. It's a game console first and foremost.
Now, MS first experimented with the indie concept with the Incubator Program on Xbox. They would accept prototypes and then fund or assist project if they were found to be suitable. This gen the concept was pushed even further with XNA and the indie program. Something could be said for Sony having the OtherOS option on PS3. But here you have a grassroots, community funded console that focuses on open platform and indie development while managing to have a familiar OS and extremely reasonable entry cost. Certainly they advocate homebrew, hacking, and rooting, but I wanted to refrain from making this a run-of-the-mill pissing contest.
Long-term viability and game library will only be revealed with time, but here on what is effectively Day 1 of this thing's lifecycle, it was a resounding success with over $1.5 million being donated. It's currently sitting at $2.8 million with over 20k backers. It's these powerful ideals being put into action. It's nothing short of amazing. To think they were hoping for $900k in funding, so many possibilities have been opened for them by the community. If that's not a ray of hope in the harsh realm of console gaming then I don't know what is.
The console will drop in Spring of 2013. Let's see what will happen. I think something amazing will come of this. Just feels right.
Well, they obviously don't need my support so I'll wait until the thing actually comes out to decide whether or not I actually want to buy it.
I like the idea and it's definitely an interesting concept. Let's see how they follow through.
I wonder how many games released for that console wouldn't also show up for smartphones. My guess is not many...musicalmac
You never know, I mean they have a $3 million budget.
Think they'd waste that on securing exclusives? That usually takes more than a few million bucks...You never know, I mean they have a $3 million budget.

No I mean using that $3 million to make Dev Kits better or something of that nature.
This console sounds unique and interesting. Could produce some real hidden gems if it lives up to the hype they have given it :P
Graphics will probably suck, though for 99$ I don't think many will complain.

Well, it won't quite be up there with the 360 and PS3 but the Tegra 3 is capable of running some very good looking games at HD resolutions and high framerates. (See: Shadowgun, NOVA 3 and Riptide GP)

I think it will be surprisingly competitive. The games displayed on the tegra 3 right now look pretty decent already. On top of that, it is going to be overclocked for the console because of more efficient heat dispersal and no need to worry about power management.[QUOTE="The_Game21x"][QUOTE="SaltyMeatballs"]

Well, I hope this thing comes to fruition and developers really push the Tegra 3. Sounds like it could have a chance of beating the 360 and PS3 after all.

Other things to consider, shadowgun on the best tegra 3 tablets right now, runs at higher resolution than 1080p at 60fps. If these games were optimized for the ouya they could look very amazing. However, the poly count in these games is not even close to 360/ps3 games as far as I can tell. I dont know about beating them, but i bet there will be some games to release for it that will be pretty comparable to the hd twins.Big deal over a $99 console. People should buy whatever they want. I like the idea, but i think their concept is flawed. They seem to want to take mobile games and play them on your TV. Why would anyone do that? Ninja-HippoThey also mentioned making it easier for indie developers to develop games for the "TV" instead of for mobile platforms.

Ninja-HippoThey are making a business model vastly superior to XBLA and PSN for downloadable games with indie devs and smaller game makers. Some of the best games i've played this gen have been PSN games.
[QUOTE="GOGOGOGURT"]No.Can this play planetside 2?
SaltyMeatballs
Bollocks!
It would be interesting if it became more powerful, and was able to play any F2P game the PC could. Basically it was steam.
Guess it'd be more expensive then.
Now that would be an amazing console. It'd be just like a PC, but less expensive, and you couldn't play games on disk.
[QUOTE="SaltyMeatballs"][QUOTE="ohgeez"] That image was posted on reddit and proven to be point for point wrong and the creator was berated for being an idiot.ohgeezThat is good to know. haha yeah, its probably my favorite thing about reddit. Truth gets upvoted and flies to the top of the page. Also, one look at the TC's profile would show that his opinions in general are very unpopular, read "troll". The only reason the guy has a decent amount of karma (upvotes on reddit) is because he's one of those people who spends every waking moment posting crap on the internet. Also, people will upvote a topic with good discussion in it (like the TCs) regardless of if it is false or idiotic so more discussion can be had.
Reddit is not always right. I've seen the hivemind in there backpedaling quite often. Like that time when one of the most voted posts was that offensive image about that Bioware's employe. The next day the most voted post was reddit apologizing. I do like their voting system but sometimes it feeds a horrible hivemind attitude where everyone that has a slightly different viewpoint from the majority is downvoted into oblivion.
As for this image, it is right on one thing. The hardware is terrible, the same one that is used on phones and everyone that knows two things about that tech knows that it becomes outdated in 1-2 years.
Lol. No serious indie developer will make anything for Android, let alone this crap. No Source Engine or Unreal Engine 3. And the audience are complete cheapskates would pirate softwares like no tomorrow--one of the many reasons Epic blacklisted this trash platform.

You still haven't answered my question, how many kickstarters actually succeeded? Besides, what is the gaming background to this company trying to make this? Even if it's priced at $99, how can they earn a profit out of it since they have to pay the middle-men for materials? Last Supply and Demand. How much money can they recieve to open new factories to build this console to please the masses? They need to learn how to GENERATE cash flow!

There are no devkits because it uses Android, the only devkit is the SDK that you can download right now from google's site if you wish.haha yeah, its probably my favorite thing about reddit. True reddit isn't always right about everything, it can't be perfect. That being said, it is way better than this place in those regards. The image said the hardware is worse than the wii. That is so far from the truth and for the price, the hardware is actually excellent.3.5 Million dollars, it does show there was a demand for a open source platform. I do hope they add some basic things like a sd/micro sd slot.
Already a tablet owner i have a hard time getting behind it. I just don't see how this can do anything better than my tablet i already have.
I do think there asumption that big budject Triple A games will come to this. Is false. Problems is install base, and the power of the machine
I actually see tons of potential in Ouya...and I think people are stupid to right it off so soon.Could it fail? absolutely, but it also could become a sensation...time will tell.

It's only targeting mobile in the sense that it's an easy way to build a library: devs are much more likely to jump on-board if they can say "hey, if I target Android I can throw this up on both Play and Ouya and get two birds stoned at once". Then as the platform becomes more established the idea is to transition to more original/"better with Ouya"-type content.

Watch them become corporate juggernauts.
Stop being so pessimestic. I'm a realist, and I think they have a chance.
This console has far to much of a niche market to survive. I cannot think of anyone who will invest in a console that has the same games that they can get on a Smartphone or Tablet. I can understand the want to promote Indie development but this is not the way to go about it.

Good idea but I wish they did instead a PC with an optimised for gaming Linux environment. We need more Linux development, Android is a start I guess but hopefully the games produced there get their way to Linux PCs.kuraimenMaybe someone should do a Kickstarter? :P
Seriously. Steam is already coming to Linux. GOG better be next. Since GOG doesn't have enough manpower to fully support Linux i.e. not half ass it, one could do a Kickstarter, then give the money to GOG so that they can actually hire some folks to start supporting Linux. That would be amazing.
:o
Fun and silly fact: The request asking for Linux games to be sold on GOG now has more votes than the Steam group asking for a Linux client has members! Keep it up!

How's that work exactly? Are people not getting paid? I'd rather pay $40 to $50 for a well made, complete, product.
