Thanks to all that ram built into the handheld, the PS Vita seems to be a really fast piece of machinery that seems to set up the LiveArea UI and play other games as well. Here's a video of the demonstration:

Haven't seen a killer app for the Vita yet but so far it looks to be one hell of a handheld.

It is. There has been a few developer diaries telling how easy it is to develop games for the Vita since Sony has made some easy dev kits for it.

the Vita is a dedicated gaming device. even if a smartphone was as powerful as the Vita, spec for spec, it still wouldn't come close to matching it gaming wise. btw, I follow smartphone news pretty closely, I don't think we're getting a 4 core phone anytime soon, a year and a half is my guess.

RAM =/= Power but "Possibilities in same time", Phone have ton of services that game console don't need and using of RAM, not to mantion lot of application made for are made to run on older phones with lower RAM, specially if you talking about Android (that it don't have much games as iPhone which have 2 lines of devices)

Maybe Sony can talk to Natsume and have a Harvest Moon on the Vita with touchscreen functionality to grow your own garden and such.

I'd rather use the rear touch-pad, seeing as I don't want my hands getting in the way of the screen. That's why i prefer the DS dual screen feature over the iPhone.

rear touchscreen is not much effective for pointing as front touch screen since it's hard to point something from the rer with one try, on other hand rear touch pad is good for gesture detecting without covering th screen

Yeah, but real gamers would want to play dedicated consoles on big screen tvs like I do. Of course they can take tablets on the go, but for gaming wise, it just doesn't suit it enough for true gamers to buy a tablet and play only a small amount of games on a tablet or a smartphone.

The screen switching was cool, but the video was cringe worthy!! The way the dude was constantly hitting buttons and the screen when it was still loading (and said "loading" on the screen. It was like watching someone with ADHD who never played a video game before pick up the controller. "Oh I can't control character from very instant... turn off and play ridge racer.." lol.... Everytime that dude hit the screen when it was loading it irked me, don't know why..

There's no reason to not buy a PS Vita. The US currency is worth basically nothing right now. $250 is a serious bargain.

DerpyMcDerp

Counter argument (and just my opinion, not fact) I have no reason to since I'd rather play the IPs on the Vita on my PS3 since they, at the moment, don't differ enough from recent console installments (LBP2 just came out this past year, UC3, KZ3) and overall I wish it had more unique titles worth the high admission price ($330-$350 with tax after one game and a memory card) in addition to the fact that I can't fit a device of the Vita's size anywhere to travel with, and that the multmedia functions are far better, and easier to use, on my smartphone.

This argument can be made against the 3DS as well to some extent.

I really don't think US consumers are going to respond very well to the Vita post-launch month/hype. Just IMO.

To be fair, pretty much all casual and hardcore gamers didn't pick the PSP as their main dedicated handheld gaming device, so the Vita has a huge uphill battle against the 3DS, not smartphones.

15 trillion dollar debt :o I'd say spend your money while it still holds the illusion of value, who knows maybe by next year it will be 50 dollars to a yen. I'm so moving out of the U.S before that happens :| wonder if i'll find a future in south america.

True, but smartphones are actually picking up and sales are spreading rapidly. That's why more developers are also going mobile these days to get some of the market.

Actually it is there is not denial of that dude. I am as mad as any one about the memory card crap,to the point of not getting one until sony change their policy or they do a huge drop on those cards, but the Vita does look impressive.

yea but the really good, popular developers and publishers will never commit fully to $5 or less apps.

I mean, look at how much profit Nintendo just made off Super Mario 3D Land. It has sold 300k in NA in about one week, and about two weeks in Japan netted 450k. That's 750k in a short time. That is nearly $30 million. Considering almost all 3DS game budgets are no more than $2 million, and that isn't even counting Europe, why would you ever invest in a cheap app when you can push these units?

I know indie devs can't, but shouldn't they want to attain such lofty goals? I'm sure thatgamecompany, Q-Games, are happy Sony has helped them sell so well on PSN/PSP/PS3

I mean, compare the profits between Super Street Fighter IV on iOS and 3DS, Resident Evil iOS games and Resident Evil on 3DS, and its no wonder Capcom is supporting the 3DS like nuts.

This shouldn't be a surprise. Sony forces a new format of some type on us every gen

PS1 used CDs, PS2 used DVDs, PS3 used BRs, PSP with Memory Stick Duo and UMD, PSP go with a different Memory Stick Duo

Sometimes this works out for us, other times it is a pain.

They wanted all these formats to become standard in other markets like computers, cameras, tvs, etc.

Mobile games brought in more revenue than PSP, ds and 3ds this year(not including November sales). If you put a good game on ios chances are that you'll succeed. Crappy versions of console games from capcom is not how you judge the space.

[QUOTE="e_stone001"] True, but smartphones are actually picking up and sales are spreading rapidly. That's why more developers are also going mobile these days to get some of the market.MFDOOM1983

yea but the really good, popular developers and publishers will never commit fully to $5 or less apps.

You're comparing 100,000 games and apps and the revenue they create (some are ad supported too, something handheld games can't do) to like, console libraries of 100-500 titles total?

I'm guessing you're using that old article showing mobile games made more money than DS/PSP from a month ago, right? Its a small gap, like $500 million. Oh and by the way, that doesn't include 3DS software at all, nor does it include the holidays where Nintendo titles sell best, or anything from the Vita Japan launch.

That doesn't include $64 million from Ocarina of Time 3D, nor does it include about $50-$100 million more from other games without even mentioning the $40 million-$50 million Nintendo made in two weeks with Super Mario 3D Land, or the $50-$100 million Mario Kart 7 will likely make before 2011 is over. (and $20-$30 million from Star Fox)

So, like 4 Nintendo titles on the 3DS alone will likely close that gap of Android/iOS making $500 million more than DS/PSP. That study didn't include anything 3DS or Vita, the markets are shifting to a new generation. Of course PSP and DS software sales would be lower. The only reason you have $1.9 billion in revenue on software on smartphones is because there are 30,567 developers releasing cheap games all getting a small piece of the pie.

Whereas you have about 100-500 developers getting even bigger pies altogether on the Vita and 3DS.

And if you're talking about this http://www.neowin.net/news/mobile-phone-gaming-makes-more-money-than-portable-consoles then I will correct you that that study DOES NOT include anything from the 3DS or Vita. Its much closer than that, infact I'd say it will favor DS/PSP/3DS/Vita before years end, and in 2012 I'm sure it will be back in Sony/Nintendo's favor since they are simply starting a new gen

At the end of the year the split will closer to 50/50 or 55/45 is what you're saying? Two years ago it was 80/20. If the trend continues mobile WILL have the majority. I don't have an issue with larger devs that have larger budgets making more. I just find it nice that smaller devs have an avenue to reach consumers and have a chance at success.

Two years ago the PSP fell off the face of the earth in NA/EU and died a slow painful death at retail with a terrible revision (PSP Go) and people were already plotting Nintendo's next move as 2009/2010 the DS starting looking long in the tooth.

2010 especially was a transition year just like this one. I'm saying that if 4 Nintendo games for the 3DS make up that $500 million difference, then adding in all Vita and other games for the 3DS should make it more in favor of 3DS/DS/PSP/Vita

Talk to me when Vita/3DS are in their prime in late 2012, or all of 2013 and we'll see how its going then. I think mobile phones have got a bigger cut, yes. But I wouldn't be surprised to see it go back to 65% or 70% in favor of 3DS/Vita after 2013. Will it go back to 80%? Probably not. I'm sure you could make the same argument for FB games and flash gaming killing off PC gaming, but they co-exist
