[QUOTE="deltamirage"]

[QUOTE="Guppy507"]Of course not. It was 2nd only to the PC last gen.Guppy507

this might have been clever if the PC was considered a console.

On Topic: The PS2 was one of the best consoles ever made, you cant argue that. Sales alone in hardware and software paint a pretty amazing picture. That said, i spent more time gaming on my PC and N64 than I did on my PS2 and Xbox.

2nd only to PC = best console last gen. I didn't say the PC was a console. :|

and this discussion is about consoles there for PC anything is irrelevant.

This may belong on the legacy platforms board, but whatever.

It seems the PS2 is highly regarded as the greatest console ever, yadda yadda.

Me PERSONALLY, I enjoyed Dreamcast and Xbox much much more last gen. As far as games went, features, pretty much everything.

So my question is, what about the PS2 made it one of the greatest systems ever, in your opinion?

FireXxAnts

I agree it is the most overrated console ever. Nothing about it ever got my attention. Sure there were loads of games, but that's because everyone bought it--without hesitation--because of the success of the PS1. The Xbox and the Gamecube were far better consoles. Back in that generation it wasn't even worth comparing online ps2 to xbox live. The ps2 was just full of sequel. Xbox was the true next gen console that took gaming to a new area. It wasn't until GT4 and Snake Eater were announced that I really needed to get a ps2.

Ironically, the 360 is sort of the ps2 of this generation, and the ps3 being the xbox.

it can be a little overrated. many seem to be under the impression that every game on the PS2 was quality when it was really inundated with crap and shovelware. as a gaming machine it also wasnt exactly brilliant. slow disc drive and odd hardware did it no favours. it was also notoriously unreliable (though not 360 bad). but bottom line..it had alot of crackin games. personally the GC was my console of choice last gen but credit where credit is due..in terms of numbers the PS2 mopped the floor with the competition (except perhaps the PC) in terms of good games and had exclusive 3rd party support that was the envy of the world.

Last gen I preferred the Dreamcast / PS2 / Gamecube over the Xbox.

I don't think the PS2 was overrated, it had lots of games for everybody.

Activision because they keep setting new standards for games in every genre and keep pushing forward the industry in the way it should go.

It has a great library, but hell the dreamcast was better IMO. The only reason the Dreamcast went dead was because it didnt have DVD functionality. People were only buying the ps2 when it first came out because it was a cheap DVD player.

Anyway, although I prefer the Gamecube, you gotta give Sony credit that pretty much nuked the competition with it's huge library and sales. Hell, I got my own PS2 this gen and I still get games for it, mainly because I missed a lot of good multiplats last gen.

why do people love the dreamcast so much? i just dont see it. i own one, it had like a few decent games. otherwise it was loaded down with quirky but not necessarily good japanese games and great sports games that got completely eclipsed by the ps2. can somebody honestly answer what was so good about it, other than nostalgia and the fact that it was segas last console? i understand that it seemed awesome at launch where it was ahead of its time, but that lasted for like one year before it got totally overshadowed.

not trying to rag on anybody here, maybe im just missing something or some piviotal game int he dc library? i just dont see what makes it so great.

I kind of agree. Out of all the previous-gen consoles I found the PS2 to be the least interesting. This all boils down to personal preference as a lot of its exclusives didn't appeal to me. The only game I feel like I've missed out on (as I only got a PS2 in 2006) was Ratchet & Clank. I played God of War 1 & 2, and while they were great games in their own right, they weren't substantial enough to warrant buying a PS2. There are lots of other examples, but discussing them all separately would take all day, seeing as the PS2 did have the largest quantity of games appearing for it by far. Also a lot of garbage, but people tend to forget about that.

Anyway, I found my PS2 to be handy due to there being a lot of games on it, so I never had to look for them seeing as a lot of them are still available to this very day. But for my 'real' gaming fix, I usually moved to GC or Xbox exclusives, not to mention that nearly all of the multiplats were inferior on the PS2. I also hated the controller.

Oh you just want opinions... okay ;)

Consoles are about playing games. PS2 had the most exclusive games, of every verity. Sure take out 1/3 for not being great take out 1/3 for being avarage and you still have more games that are very good to great than any other console.

More people say PS2 is the greatest console ever because there was more verity... GAMES for EVERYONE.

I loved some Game cube games, Dreamcast games, and some Xbox games so its not like because PS2 was the domanite console that the others were bad.

Considering I'm an JRPG fan it's probably the best console ever made. Just my opinion though.

I wouldn't call it overrated, it was a great console and not only did it have a huge library but it has some of the greatest games made last gen, I personally preferred the GC last gen though which while lacking in quantity made up for it with quality. Its held in high regard by the people who grew up playing it as kids so good luck convincing them it wasn't the greatest thing since sliced bread, for me personally it never lived up to the standards set by its predecessor (and no I didn't grow up playing the PS1 I grew up on Sega :P).

The DC was dead since it launch, did you know that since it launch the DC could not even beat the PS1 in sales, sony was selling 10 million PS1 a year and Sega sold 10 million DC's on its life time.

With or wihtout DVD it would had fail, the xbox had DVD and failed hard.

People had to face it and let it go the PS2 was the best console ever,on games there is not a console even close, and it had something for every one,not just shooters.

I don't know.

I didn't buy that many games for it, but on a fun-factor level, it's probably my 4th favorite system ever.

though I never bought a whole bunch of games for it and it wasn't the best last generation in terms of reliability, it was still better than the Gamecube and Xbox from what I experienced of the 3.

Dude by the time MS released the xbox sony was already wining 100 million to 25 million vs the xbox,it wasn't even close hell you can combine what the xbox 360 has sold in this 5 years, and what the original xbox sold on 5 years and still would be like 33 millions away from the PS2 5 year sales numbers.

Lets see.

xbox 25 million units lifetime.

xbox 360 41 million units until now.

PS2 100 million November 2005.

25 + 41 =66 millions units combined for the xbox brand.

PS2 100 as off Nov 2005.

100 - 66 = 34. big gap if you ask me.

No way is the PS2 the most overrated console, its the most popular console of all time, still selling, games are still made for it, and the library of games for it is just massive! I was actually playing on my PS2 the other day (KH2), still feels brilliant to play and looks very good

The dreamcast and xbox are some of the worst consoles of all time and you call the PS2 overrated? lol dude... The 360 is the most overrated console of all time imo. Does nothing special, lives off multiplats, nickles and dimes you to death and is treated by a lot of the american fanbase as amazing when in reality it's light years behind the PS3.

Hey everyone, TC here. You know after reading over most of your posts here, yeah I probably am a bit biased and opinionated. But again it all comes down to preference.

I am heavy into shooters, driving games, WRPGs, action games. I guess thats just the American in me.Where as the majority of people here tend to be more into JRPGs, Japanese stuff, less shooters, etc. But yes in that light, the PS2 was a phenominal system. But it just did not cater to my needs thats all.

Funny how lemmings in other threads regarding PS3 and xbox360 they throw out the "higher rated exclusives" argument including every thing from AA to bottom barrel A games to pad their argument of the 360 being the better system...strange how the logic if flip flopped and ignored when the discussion is truned to xbox vs PS2 when the PS2 was clearly superior in that category.

That could be a valid point. But me personally,I just wasn't (and still am not) too hardcore into JRPGs, Dragonball Z or Yugioh or whatever its calledor any of that Animejunk which PS2 seemed to have an awful lot of. ThoughI did/do enjoy the Final Fantasy franchise quite a bit. Could never really get into a whole lot of the sony exclusives too much, with the exception of maybe Metal Gear Solid, Twisted Metal Black, and Gran Turismo games were fun too.

There are a lot of different games for PS2. Not just JRPGs. I have a ton of Survival Horror games for the system.

I'm actually struggling with my Dreamcast library because most of the worthwhile games are for PS2 or GC.

I'd agree that during the time the systems were competing, Dreamcast had the better library.

ThePlothole

I agree with this. The Dreamcast was able to build up a solid library far more quickly than the PS2, and probably any of the 3 systems in the gen previous to it. It was really phenomenal in how quickly it was able to offer so many great games.

Yet at the same time, I don't think it measures up to the PS2 anymore. Not even close.

Most overated? Naw, its arguably the best. Flaunted as so much superior to every other system? Yeah, maybe I didn't play enough PS2 games but none made me say "damn, this is a defining moment in gaming" like people seem to like to say the system did.

I didn't even think this was up for debate. The PS2 killed the competition with the games. It almost had more AAAs then the PC had which is amazing. The amount of quality games that came out will probably not be repeated for a long time, and also it had Persona 3 and 4 so it wins by default.

Nah, it was good. But I didn't have much money back then to appreciate the library of games like I can now with the 360 and Wii. And I don't plan on going back and replaying them. I don't care, 3D games get ugly fast, they don't age well. It's not like hooking up the SNES which looks as good as you remember.

good point.

I also noticed how cows cover up PS2 DRE but love to talk up RROD.

and how graphics weren't the most important thing last generation when the Xbox was blatantly superior, correct?

if you want to point out double-standards, it's best to exploit both sides;)

you might want to consider the fact that many cows from last generation are probably lemmings. btw.

  • Had the biggest game library
  • It's still being sold today
  • Sony hasn't abandoned it unlike what Nintendo, Sega, and Microsoft did to their last gen consoles.

The PS2 was a great system, no doubt about that. I spent almost entire summers using the PS2. I could easily say I spent a few thousand hours using my PS2.

Unlike this gen, the PS2 had the best of all the worlds (except online community and shooters). It had the best sales, the most varied games, the highest rated games, the most exclusives, and to me the most fun. It had entertainment for almost any person you could think of and definitely was a factor in DVD's sucess. Without the PS2, where would we be?

I doubt that we will ever see a console again with such huge successes in all areas, this generation has the best worlds spread out on all the consoles.

Had more games on PS2 than GC, XBOX and DC combined, by like double. It was just the greatest console ever.

I wouldn't say greatest ever, but it had a very good gaming library. A lot of people on these forums had their childhood during the peak of the ps2, so they may remember it more fondly than it was.

Definitely not overrated.

Deserves every bit of praise it's gotten.

Yeah but you can pretty much say that about people who say SNES is the greatest too for example. SNES had a ton of awesome games, but there were far more developers, more budgets, etc by the PS2 era, so it has a lot more games in pretty much every genre, and quality ones too. Of course its possible to like one console's games more than the others, but I don't think either opinion can be denied.

FireXxAnts

That's your problem then.

You want an overrated console, see the Nintendo DS.
