i bought a 80gb 4usb ps3 last week because my lil bro is a computer geek and he wanted one for linux. I did not know at the time that the older ps3 had so many problems because mines get very hot. And i cant play ps3 games cause of the freezing and disk errors. so now im left 4 dead. should've bought a brand new slim

After researching my problems, i concluded that the ps3 fail rate must be higher than 2%. they need to recount

Just because you or your friends had some bad luck doesn't mean the failure rate isn't 2%.

The Wii and the PS3 have been proven to be very, very reliable.

However, it's a shame for those that don't have those kinds of experiences.

I've had a 60GB ps3 since 06 and never had a problem, guess I'm part of the 98% who still have working PS3's 8) In the other hand I've bought 4 xbox 360 and 3 of them have died on me :x

Sony says the failure rate is less than 2%. They also say a lot of other things that aren't exactly true. I believe the actual number is closer to 10% http://scitech.blogs.cnn.com/2009/09/04/wii-trumps-xbox-360-ps3-in-repair-rate-survey/

Actually, inital FR is of 5%, the 2 years FR is of 13%. This is from a 10k cases study. Wii is the most reliable one, though issues as Wiiconnect still perdure. The 360 has gone down to 20-25% thanks to the Jasper chipsets.

ps3 is an extremely reliable system, even the older models have little to no problems so 2% fail rate is accurate and you just got unlucky.

We've had our system pretty much a Year after it's Launch. we got a 80 gig and it's had it's share of problems (freezing) but it never really failed. The Freezing doesn't happen often.

I put linux on mine with no probs at all. PS3s fail rate is around 10% and the 360s is around 45%. It's been stated in many mags and web sites. I myself have had no probs with 4 ps3s I own and the 4 people I know with PS3s have had no probs and all the PS3s are 2-3 years old.

For every 1 ps3 that flops, 6 xbox360's bite the dust, which leads us to the question, how much has this contributed to xbox360 sales? If 50% of xbox360 owners (37 million) replaced their xbox just once on average, that's an additional ~18-20 million sales.

If the xbox was a more reliable console, and if it had been released alonside the ps3 and wii instead of a year before, microsoft would have sold around 20 million xbox360's by now, no more.

After constantly denying issues with the PS1 and PS2, anything Sony says in this matter should naturally be taken with a heavy pinch of salt.

Yeah but if your PS3 breaks you have to pay out of pocket to fix it, whereas with the 360 you get it fixed for free. Also if what you said was even remotely true the 360 wouldn't sell way more games than PS3 because the hardware numbers would be inflated and there wouldn't be as many people buying games. Considering the consoles attach rates your argument is extremely flawed.

It appears you don't understand how statiscall analisis or math works.

Only because your broke and you saw forum on internet with people that happened the same doesn't mean the fail rate is bigger than that.

Math says there is 640 thousands ps3 that broke from the 32 millions ps3 sold, unless during your research you have come to an evidence that there is more than 640thousands Ps3 broken, there is nothing you can say that will make your research seem more believe than a scientific research that envolved more than 2thousands of peers.

60%? why would you pick such a high number?

and why would you think that replacement consoles count as sales? your post is very mysterious.

I know this is only a tiny fracture of a percent but, i had to send in my PS3 for repairs, another friend of mine got the YLOD, and 2 of my other friends PS3s kept freezing on them mid game. Whilst i out of the 4 of us i'm the only one with an Xbox 360 that has got the RROD.

Strange how things differ

This.... I've found sony Consoles in the past unreliable and cannot see the PS3 being any differant. its either Die of RROD or The Blu-Ray Driver dies on you, Either way your console is gonna die.

TC, i guess your not very intelligent in comprehension...? First off, the failure rate is much less than 2%, second, its olny your PS3, compared to the other 34 million PS3's, so why would the failure rate become higher based off ofone PS3

I'd say the fail rate is from 7% to 10%, my PS3 failed when I took care of that thing like a baby.

As always, 80GB BC version, UGH, $500 brick.
