Sony's latest financial results reveal that worldwide sales of PlayStation 3 now stand at 38.1 million units, following 2.4 million sales of the console in the company's first quarter, which ended 30th June 2010.

Microsoft announced a few days ago that Xbox 360 has shipped 41.7 million units worldwide, although it has had a year longer on the market than its main competitor.

2.4 million sales of PS3 in Q1 represents a 118 per cent increase on last year's 1.1 million sales, although things weren't so rosy for the PSP, sales of which declined slightly to 1.2 million compared to 1.3 million in the same period of 2009.

The mighty PS2, meanwhile, sold a sterling 1.6 million units.

Money-wise, the Networked Products & Services division, of which games is a component, saw sales rise 32.4 per cent to 325 billion yen, of which games contributed 142 billion yen and PCs the rest

So it looks like the ps3 actually has a fair chance on passing the 360, maybe even as soon as next year? Lets just wait and see how Kinect and Move does.

A key note: Shipped =/= Sold. So how much did the 360 sold to make a valid claim of "catching up" would help aid your topic a little bit, TC.

The TC did mention it in his link 41.7 LTD shipped by Microsoftand in the link itself 1.6 for the similar qtr. So the PS3 sold 800K more than the 360 in the same qtr. Remember they have different fiscal year ending dates. The 1.6 PS2 can't be the QTR totals can it? Who the heck is still buying PS2's?

I don't think Kinect can change that,so is a 3.6 million lead for the xbox 360 i think sony can beat them, what people fail to see is that even that the PS3 is been a tittle out sold on US,the PS3 is out selling the xbox 360 in EU a tlittle as well, and in Japan the xbox 360 is dead, while the PS3 is on a race neck and neck with the Wii.

So in a year alone sony can add 1.5 million or more lead just in Japan, because the xbox 360 is dead there.

You got that right!! haha XD Still awesome to see the PS2 sell 1.6 million! :O

How is it possible that the PS2 has as many units shipped to retailers as the 360? Who is buying the PS2? I guess Latin America is really buying up the PS2.

So, the install base is 3.6 million apart? :o

Well, the race is so close, it's just for fun at this point. It's not going to effect us, but obviously developers and publishers are becoming aware of this. :P Although, that "little overpriced at launch ($600), Blu-Ray Playin', One year late behind the 360 PS3" didn't do as bad as the naysayers / doom mongers have been predicting for years, I suppose.

The gap 3+ million, now it's up to MOVE and Kinect...and of course Halo Reach, Fable 3, InFamous 2, Killzone 3, GeoW 3, SOCOM 4, LittleBigPlanet 2, Twisted Metal PS3, Gran Turismo 5, and whatever else I forgot to mention.

NOTE :

These Sony Numbers are todays, and the Xbox Numbers are from days ago, so this is as up to date as SW can get.

That is really weak when you compare it to the PS2. Sony has really lost their dominance on the industry this gen.

MS and Sony both report the same thing. I did not see Sony being this close to the 360 in sales, this is definitely surprising.

It sounds like Sony are stuffing the supply line whereas MS were doing the opposite, the PS2 outselling the 360, thats simply not possible unless Sony were really trying hard to pleas investors. With the launch of the 360 S, chances are the gap will increase next set of results.

No there are mutiplatform games on Wii that doesn't sell as well as on PS3 and 360,is more about taste certain number of gamers like certain types of games in both units, that is why FPS always sold better on the xbox brand of consoles.

DO I really need to explain that shipped == sold. Shipped MEANS that retails have purchased 360s or PS3s and they have been shipped to be sold at retail outlets.

Once they get on market there is no real way to tell if it lands in the hands of a person or somewhere else.

Don't they? All we get is NPD and the 360 is still way ahead in the US so that's where most people get the notion from that 360 games outsell ps3 version 2:1.

And i know I've bought 2 360's and know many (off and online) who have also bought atleast 2 360's due to rrod outside of warranty.

How it will increase? when on EU the PS3 sell better,on US the xbox 360 sell better = Tied and in Japan the xbox 360 is dead,by the end of this year the PS3 in japan alone this year will probably sell 1.5 million units more than the xbox 360 does in Japan.

This is not a US market race alone and people just forget that, they think US = the whole world, sony is stuffing the channels? come on dude for months the PS3 supply was short, and the PS3 was having shortages.

Seriously, I don't think worldwide numbers of games sold are out there for every multiplat are they?

The fact you even have to think about using obscure Japanese games says it all. Trust me Sony would be trumpeting it from the rooftops if it were the case, as their PR dept so loves to do.

I think the Kinect is going to be a huge success and make the 360 the system to get this Christmas. I can see a point where the PS3 might pass the 360. I just think the Kinect is going to save that from happening any time soon.

FACT: these are official Sony numbers being compared to official MS numbers. They know more than you which means your arguement is moot and extremely uninformed.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Sony started reporting ONLY the number of console SOLD TO RETAILERS last year. This is literally the closest possible number you can get because nobody on earth has any precise way of knowing exactly how many consoles are sold directly to customers. So sold to retailers is literally the best you can do because units are shipped to retailers regularly and are a good indicators of sales because retailers will NOT order tons of consoles if they didn't have the shelf space for them or didn't think they would sell.

It sounds like Sony are stuffing the supply line whereas MS were doing the opposite, the PS2 outselling the 360, thats simply not possible unless Sony were really trying hard to pleas investors. With the launch of the 360 S, chances are the gap will increase next set of results.GulliversTravel

1) Sony only reports the number of consoles they sell directly to retailers. They can not force retailers to buy a ton of consoles they don't want or can't sell. So there is no "stuffing the supply line" in these numbers.

2) I like how you have ZERO evidence to back the "stuffing" theory and yet also use the lack of evidence to praise MS for NOT stuffing the supply line. If you don't see the flat out ridiculousness of that logic than you win the fanboy oscars, sirs.

3) I WILL agree that with the new 360 slim now out, and a price drop, MS could very well increase the gap once gain in the next set of financials.

kinda makes those people that said the gap had no chance of cllosing seem foolish now, they probably stll only wanna talk npd1stPlaceWinner

Is only fans who don't want to see things how they are,the only place were the xbox 360 is beating the PS3 is on US,on EU and Japan the PS3 is betting the 360,so i don't know how people can think that the gap will not close.

[QUOTE="CocoMarshmellow"]That is really weak when you compare it to the PS2. Sony has really lost their dominance on the industry this gen.Tyrant156
No one stays number one forever, Nintendo went through the same ups and downs.

you are absolutely right, nothing in this world is permanent.

The fact you even have to think about using obscure Japanese games says it all. Trust me Sony would be trumpeting it from the rooftops if it were the case, as their PR dept so loves to do.blue_hazy_basic

But where are the worldwide numbers? Do they exist? Or are you also one of those people who say US = worldwide?

How many games did MS ship in Q2 anyway? Sony has that mentioned in their report, doesn't MS? I'll go look for those.

I think the Kinect is going to be a huge success and make the 360 the system to get this Christmas. I can see a point where the PS3 might pass the 360. I just think the Kinect is going to save that from happening any time soon. HarlockJC
I hope you are wrong about Kinect, it just looks plain awful.

I can see the PS3 fanboys celebrating when the PS3 moves ahead of the 360 by one system, both system are selling really well, I don't think theres anything to worry about.
