This year's increases in GaN-based blue semiconductor laser manufacturing capacity are making Sony confident of meeting its Playstation 3 sales targets, with the company expecting to ship 11 million consoles in the twelve months to April 2008.

Sony now makes 1.7 million blue lasers per month (see related stories), sufficient production for its console commitments, and plenty of Blu-ray players besides.

"Production problems have now ceased, we're in full production as far as Playstation 3 is concerned and there's a steady chain of supply in North America, Japan and Europe," said a spokesperson for the Computer Entertainment division of the Japanese corporation.

In its annual report, Sony said it sold 5.5 million Playstation 3 units in the fiscal year ended March 31 2007, despite having faced production yield problems for its blue semiconductor lasers that feature inside each machine.

Sony is convinced that the Playstation 3 will eventually match the wild success of the PS2, discounting competition from other console makers as a factor.

"We're aiming towards a much broader lifestyle for home entertainment enthusiasts, that's one of the reasons the Playstation 2 went on to sell over 115 million units worldwide," said a spokesperson.

In its annual report Sony says it expects to establish the same successful business model with the PS3 that it achieved with the PS2.

"Ultimately it will come down to content," explained the company's spokesman.

"What it offers for its price is exceptional value for money - a quarter of the cost of a PC of similar capability and about the same as a commercial Blu-ray player."

Shouldn't Sony be more worried about selling PS3s than making them? Its great and all thatthey can make alot of shiny blue lasers, but they might wanna consider selling the ones sitting on store shelves now first.

I'd be willing to bet that the PS3 doesn't even sell 1/4 of what the PS2 sold.
115,000,000 /4= 28.75 million.
Quote me if you want. PS3 will not break 30 million sold.

5.5 makes sense, they would have pushed a ton of units right before the fiscal year ended, that 5.5 million is the number sold to retailers.

Key factors that will help ps3 are, price drop, alot more games and ps2 starts to die. The first 2 have to come before the last statement.

The guy fails to mention in his article the reality.

Sony Openly admitted around April 15th they only sold 3.2 million Consoles by April 1st. They did produce 5.5 million though. he claims in his article they sold 5.5 million by april. At current sales rates the PS3 is lucky if its closing in on the 4 million mark.

You cannot seriously expect the "Playstation name alone" to sell more than 30 million. The Atari name failed to sell the Atari 5200, 7200, Jaguar, and Lynx. The Sega name failed to sell the CD, 32X, Game Gear, Saturn, Nomad, Mega Jet, and Dreamcast. The Nintendo name alone did not sell the N64, Virtual Boy, or Gamecube. The Microsoft name has failed to sell the Xbox. The Playstation name failed to sell the PSX and Pocketstation, and while it is moving PSPs, it isn't nearly at the expected rate.

I am a Playstation fan, but you are a fool if you think brand name loyalty carries 30 million consoles with it.

Neal_Gore

-.-

According to lems the 360 sold 10mill by the end of 2006 or in the beginning of 2007, so if we go by what lems have been sayingthen only 1million 360s have been bought between January and now(that's 6 months), bringing the total to 11mill.

Last year it sold 10mill in 12 months and this year it sold 1mill in 6 months, so, in order to catch up to last years sales it would have to sell 9mill in the next 6 months, good luck.

I do believe sales will be great this fall season, but not enough to reach the number of last year.

Ah, but as the sales continue to be lower-than-expected the games start to come in smaller quantities. Low sales leads to low support, which leads to less games, which again leads to low sales.

I'm not here to bash it or anything, as only the future will show what really happens.

But this...

"What it offers for its price is exceptional value for money - a quarter of the cost of a PC of similar capability and about the same as a commercial Blu-ray player."

-Renegade

Yeah, I'm sure Cubase and my other programs will run like a charm on a PS3. Even if I got them running somehow (which is highly doubtful due to copy protection etc.), they probably wouldn't excess the speed of a, let's say, 400$ PC, with a audio latency even worse than that due to missing asio drivers.

Saying you get the same value as a freaking 2400$ PC, that would excel in games performance over the PS3 without a doubt and literally stomp it when it comes to other software, imho is doubtfully at best, because you surely will not get said value.

They probably said this because the PS3 is able to run linux, but it does that surprisingly slow and trying to run Windows software with wine or similar software sure as hell won't make it any faster in doing this. Don't even start about driver support, expandability and so on.

So, for the record: being able to run linux does not make it a full blown PC.

-Renegade

Christmas time buddy and Halo 3 etc. etc

Don't even mention the PC multiplats cause casuals don't own power rigs capable of running these next gen games and are playing Solitare or the Sims on their PC

there is no way they are going to sale 9 million consoles or even get remotely close to selling that many in the last 6 months of this year.

Neither will Sony, so What's your point?

[QUOTE="greenleaf2000"]5.5 million!..........WOWSmashBrosLegend

5.5 shipped, 2 million sitting on shelves

360 has shipped 12 million while only selling 10 of those 12 so i fail to see your point.

2/6 is a much larger percentage than 2/12.

lol...Well, Ken Kutugari said PS3 consolewould sell at least 5Mil without Games.....is this prophecy true PS3 fanboys???...I see PS3 selling 20-25 Mill at most (Not even 1/4). Not even close to PS2, sorry this war belongs to Nintendo and MS.

The point is that the 360 is not doing so well either.

Next time readthrough the thread, it might help.

If 360 sales are slow, it's because they have reached to saturation point of people willing to pay $400 for a console.

Neal_Gore

Actually, this is wrong. The PC userbase is an estimated 200 million, and 16 million Dx10 chips are expected to be sold this year. That's also less than half of all GPUs sold, so we're looking at something like 40% of that 200 million getting Dx10-Dx9 GPUS.

Kind of puts a halt on your baseless Solitaire/The Sims casuals.

Would help if you didnt own yourself. 360 may not be doing "well" according to you, but its selling more than the PS3 did at the same cycle in its life...
