If your game costs $20-$30 million to make and you make it only for the PS3, you won't be making profit. Its sales aren't doing as good as they can, and it probably will not sell enough by 2008 to assure developers they'll make profit. If they don't make enough by 2008, then big developers won't support it anymore. The stronger Xbox 360 becomes, the more confident developers are making their games exclusive on the 360. Same goes for the Wii.

Will the PS3 sell enough to make profit for games like MGS 4? If it doesn't sell enough then Kojima might consider making it multiplatform, and that's ONLY if it doesn't sell well. If big games don't make enough money, then I don't think any developer will ever make it exclusive. If Sony doesn't prove themselves soon, only 1st party titles will be exclusive on their console.

it's an exaggeration to assume they won't make any profit at all on the PS3. they are selling, and games for it are in high demand. don't assume no one is buying it

I hope MGS 4 comes to PC. Hideo says hes liking the PC market more than the console market right about now. :D

But paying third parties 10-20 million per title to keep it exclusive would be bad for business if the PS3 is still trailing behind the 360 and Wii in sales.

I think I want MGS4 at this point more for the symbolizm of it...Its kinda like when the Yanks got Johnny Damon...it was more cool to me because it hurt the sox so bad...Mgs is fair at best...MGS1 was amazing...MGS2 and 3 were in the PSC  period, which stands for Post Splinter Cell period...I like real stealth personnally not vampires with guns on oil rigs...

Sure it's bad business to do this frequently, but not always a bad idea for a game that has the potential to be a system seller.

Dont worry about MGS4, DMC4, or even Final Fantasy versus..because these games have the name behind it to sell millions..Everyone is most likely waiting for these games to come out before purchasing the Playstation 3..I think by 2008 there will be at least 6 million playstation 3 that will be sold..and when the game comes i see the number sales of the PS3 increasing dramatically..As of right now both the 360 and PS3 have games that is mulitplatform..Its like no games is safe unless sony and microsoft makes it..I feel you made this post because you want MGS 4.to go mulitplatform..lol..but i dont think its goin to happen..sony is on their back and even makin a movie on mgs...

If the system continue to sell so poorly, MGS4 could easily end on something else. Also, I will not be surprised if VF5 end up being ported to PS2...

The PS3 is selling better the the 360 was at this stage in its life. Should all developers have abandoned the 360 a year ago and just made games for the PS2 and DS? It would have made sense wouldnt it?

A game needs to sell about 500k for the game to start making profit. Resistance has already sold about 500,000. MGS4 should be able to sell at least a million by the time it's out and at least 2 million within about a year of it's release...

just wait for march, even lemmings admit that the PS3 has a select few games that are good, but when march comes around, not only will the Europeans get over a million PS3's, but a lot of good games will be around for some of the people waiting.

Yes it was. That doesnt change the fact that developers could have easily just made games for the extremely popular PS2 and DS and made alot more money then they did with 360 games.

The only game I'm interested on the PS3 is VF5, nothing else. I got a PS2 and I don't see anything worth playing on PS3. HELL, I will not pay 600$ for a freaking PS3. I sold 2 on launch week and it's as close as I want to be from one.

Sony will end up being #2 this round, it's so obvious.

Did you just completely make that crap up?  Show me a link where it says that a next gen game will break even at about 500k sold.  If your going from a last generation link then you might want to rethink that.  It takes a small fortune to produce a game this generation.

I know, it's so obvious that Kojima's gonna port it. Especially because he's already said that there's no chance in hell it would ever fit on anything other than a blu-ray and how he could fill up like 50 TB with just the sound....

If you want to get some experience on Next-Gen hardware before any others cie, you don't have any choice but to go for 360. From the sales stand point right now, the 360 will end up being last.

It doesn't need to go multiplat, I'm not saying it 100% won't but I'm pretty sure you're just trying to convince yourself that it 100% will so you can play it on your xbox360...

50 terabytes? You do know that even if the sound was running at a ridiculously high quality 7.1 channel uncompressed 1.5mbps, 50TB would be enough to hold ~7 days worth (185 hours) of that sound...

I agree. Japanese developers need to eat. They will port their games to a toaster if it has a large install base.

Selling better? I have no idea, but you might be right. Irrelevant, however. The issue is whether or not the ps3 can actually generate a profit for 3rd parties... The 360 was able to generate profit for 3rd parties...the ps3 is more expensive for devleopers.

Gears of War, over 3 million copies, over $100 MILLION in sales cost around $10 million to make /Threadwalton13

GoW cost 10$ to make (and im assuming here they are not considering the cost of the unreal3 engine, but put it in too who cares)

let me tell u another fact here, (from kutako and joystiq) lostplanet cost $20 mil to make and $20 mil for ads... can u honestly tell me that Lostplanet had more ads and parties than GoW???

yeah, developing the game took $10 mil, but advertising it took a lot hell more

I really want to see evidence of Resistance selling anything of the sort. I was under the impressions that Resistance flopped badly on the sales front due to low PS3 numbers. 1up even challanged Sony on the topic of Resistance being a sacraficial lamb sent to the slaughter. Anyway please provide URL to these sales figures...

Honestly in this generation of gaming I don't understand why any non first party company would want to limit themselves to a single platform. It just doesn't make any business sense to me. But on the other hand I don't make games for a living so what do I know.

Actually, I would think they'd do anything to keep it exclusive, even spending an insane amount of money for compensating the developer.

Should they let go on either this one or FFXIII, PS3 would be no more. It would be sign, not even the more brain washed funboys could ignore....

Makes you wonder how many copies Sony will buy itself and destroy. Not to dissimilar a tactic to movie studios buying out move premiere tickets for staff, familiy, etc. to make the movie seem like a success. Friz

If I had a hit game and Sony or Microsoft drove a dump truck full of money up to my company to keep my game exclusive on their system, I would do it. Sure a game has the potential to move more units as a multi platform title. But it still costs the developers extra to make the second version and between that and a guaranteed truckload of money, I'd take the money. Of course that isn't necessarily how it works.

The PS3 is selling better the the 360 was at this stage in its life. Should all developers have abandoned the 360 a year ago and just made games for the PS2 and DS? It would have made sense wouldnt it?echelon

Thats not even remotly true. 360 demand at this stage in its life was still so high noone oculd keep it in stores, ps3 not so much.

What i've been saying for months, yet people still say "just wait for the games to come" Won't happen once the 360 gets a price drop and the marketshare rockets high.

Not to bash the wii, but thats what nintendo does, and there doing great.

I think I want MGS4 at this point more for the symbolizm of it...Its kinda like when the Yanks got Johnny Damon...it was more cool to me because it hurt the sox so bad...Mgs is fair at best...MGS1 was amazing...MGS2 and 3 were in the PSC  period, which stands for Post Splinter Cell period...I like real stealth personnally not vampires with guns on oil rigs...colmusterd28
I dont want the game at all. Just for the massive amounts of ownage and the hardcore cows that would dissappear.

I swear!!! You lemmings act like the PS3 should have come right out of the gate and sold 10 million in its first day, and since it obviously didn't, all their top exclusives are going to go multiplat. Please!!! The only reason it looks like the PS3 is doing bad is because the wii is doing so much better, and like someone has already stated, the PS3 is selling better than the 360 did this time last year, and it really doesn't matter if lemmings bring up the fact that the 360 wasn't readily available till March because the PS3 is still selling better and could possibly reach 10 million units sold in a lesser time frame than it took the 360 to reach 10 million, heck even the wii will reach 10 million in a lesser time frame. And that right there will show developers that the PS3 still has a very good following. And no I'm not a cow.

But paying third parties 10-20 million per title to keep it exclusive would be bad for business if the PS3 is still trailing behind the 360 and Wii in sales.

but good exclusives increase console sales. it takes money to make money
