720p is perfectly fine for games imo. That's because you don't play PC games, bigboi. :P Playing games in glorious 1920x1200 is quite lovely. :]Bigboi500
That's not a issue for anyone with a modern TV, but it is quite the issue for older TV set, even HD ones. I don't know of any SD TVs that came with HDMI, and even many early HDTVs didn't have the hook up.DerekLoffinIf I understand correctly, the PS3 will still come standard with the red, white, and yellow AV cables. So the only people this will affect are people who have a very old HDTVs; they will now have to put up with playing games at standard resolution only. My HDTV is pretty old though (weighs like 400 pounds) but still has an HDMI in the back.
I'm a moron, help me out here.

The new models of PS3 will require you to use an HDMI Cable
if you want to game in HD on a Hidef TV. Fortunately you can buy these type of cables for like $2 on Amazon.

it doesn't matter what it looks like, they all work the same unless you want to output 3DI just want to add that componet on the PS3 has looked horrible no mater what TV I used it with.... so good riddance. The only reason I ever used component was because of the stupid HDCP in the PS3 even while playing a game. HDMI is a night and day difference at least on the PS3.

I'm assuming you're meaning a net jacket HDMI cable. In that case, you're going to have to pay a bit more ($7.16 at monoprice).
Kind of a weird decision if it turns out to be true, but I'm not gonna make more of it than it really is. The # of people affected by this is going be be pretty small... A prospective PS3 buyer with a HDTV that either has no HDMI/DVI at all, or that it would be an unworkable hassle to rewire the connections to free up a HDMI/DVI connection from another component... yeah that's not exactly going to come up much.
At the beginning of the gen far more people with 480p/1080i TVs were affected by the lack of universal upscaling on the PS3, and that issue barely registered here. I can't see how this would be a bigger deal 4 years later.

If you find a quality cable like that monoprice cable for 2 dollars. Please let me know. PM me.
Yes there is a difference in HDMI cables. I'm not saying signal or price is that factor.
Not digital through put. That can't be changed or degraded by the digitalsignal like an analog signal can be. Unless there is a length involved in the cable.
I'm talking about the quality and the build of the cable. The components used in the manufacturing process. The connectors and such. Gold silver. Cable strength. "not signal strength".
Monoprice cables are top teir in that regard. They just feel of top quality. At a great price to boot.
As I said hook me up with a PM if you see cables of that build quality for 2 dollars on Amazon. I'm all over it.

Yeah, this.. Component on PS3 looked horrible, I can honestly say that the Xbox 360 rivalled it as far as component goes.

I buy all my cables and connectors from them. They are pure win.
Amazing build quality for the price. I feel like I'm stealing them.
Not a problem for me. I have 4 HDMI ports, 2 are being used (360 & PS3 hooked up) and 2 empty. The rest, PS2 and GC, are hooked via Components.
Have to be honest and say I didn't even know it supported HD component cables in the first place.wraigthsame here lol
lol at people not gaming on an hdtv by now. this is actually a step in the right direction. people need to get with the times. your telling me gaming on a sdtv is a good thing?
[QUOTE="Nonstop-Madness"]If you have an older HDTV that pre-dates HDMI ..... you should upgrade your TV. PBSnipes
It would cost ~$1800+ to replace my 56" DLP HDTV (which is component-only, save for one luckily HDCP-friendly DVI input) with a comparable LCD/Plasma model. Not exactly something I'm in a hurry to do.
Good thing they still make dlp's you can get a bigger tv for alot less 65" dlp for $879, 73" for $1,347, and 82" for $2000 but I get your point. spending hundreds to replace a t.v that works fine in HD because sony decides they want to get rid of a feature that works just fine would suck.
Here is what Sony has to say:
"Yesterday, we reported on a document, sent to Gamestop locations and obtained by Kotaku, that indicated Sony was disabling high-definition content via component cables. In discussing the latest PS3 model, the memo stated, "The 'K' systems will come with an AV cable, however, if you want to play a game or watch a movie in high definition you must use an HDMI cable," before going on to instruct employees to sell HDMI cables alongside the new systems. We've contacted Sony, which told us the report is inaccurate.
"The new CECH-3000 series PS3 requires HDMI only for BD movie output in HD, in compliance with AACS standards,"
Sony told Ars. "PS3 continues to support component output for HD gaming and streaming content." The Advanced Access Content System is a standard for DRM, and states that full high-definition video resolutions are limited to HDMI and DVI cables, which support HDCP. Starting in 2014, new Blu-ray players won't be able to include component ports at all in order to be in compliance with AACS standards. It's likely the author of Gamestop's document was simply confused about what the new systems will require. This will still be an annoyance for consumers with older high-definition televisions or those of us who use the component cables because we don't have enough HDMI connections for all the devices we want to plug in to our display, but at least your games and streaming content are safe."

This is true, also 1300 for a 55 plasma , but I do agree with him, I wouldn't want to spend the extra cash if I'm happy with the tv I have.
Ah, it's only for watching BD movies? Meh, not as bad and not Sony's fault.

Just saw this myself. OP updated.
UPDATE: Turns out this will affect movies only, and is the result of the movie industry's insistence on DRMing the bejeezus out of everything they can nowadays. Still a **** move on their part, but hardly something you can blame SCE for. I should've known better than to jump on a Kotaku story like that...

Leave it to the movie industry to do something like this.
One can't even upscale DVDs via component on any device anymore including PS3 and 360.
Luckily I use HDMI, but it sucks for those with older televisions.
Being technologically progressive? OH.this is why I wont be buying a sony console ever again. All they do is take things away
EdenProxy
Besides, you are only required to use HDMI for Blu-rays. Why you would try to buy and watch blu-rays on anything but a native 1080p connection is beyond me. You can still play games on component HD.

Sony taking away features and more so, HARDWARE features is A) the biggest rip off to owners of their console ever, B) not fooling anyone into buying a new tv. THeir goal is to force new 'sony' tv sales with HDMI ports for those using older tech. Being technologically progressive does not mean making it completely non backwards compatible. As for bluray needing HDCP, yes that part sux, but making it manditory sux more. Of course, pressure from the movine industry actually takes part of the blame away from Sony, but there's always online donwloads no matter how much sloppy protection they pile on.Being technologically progressive?
