SO lemmings and sheep are saying Loading times>NO loading times
WTF?
flashattackfina
25 minutes? That's like... 2 hours waiting time!
Ok, the 25 minute install isn't a big issue but the damage control from cows is just hilarious :DSupafly1what Damage control? the installation takes away the load times of DMC4 (PS3)
so are you saying you want loading times in your games?
SO lemmings and sheep are saying Loading times>NO loading times

There is no indication that there will be no loading times. And please read the previous pages, you'll find out why I think the damage control is funny because some of the people miss the point of this thread.

The installation will only improve load times not get rid of them. But if you're wondering why they're doing this it's because of the slow speed of the Blu-Ray drive. Developers can't stream data off the disk fast enough. Maybe Sony should have thought about this before they declared Blu-Ray the next game format. Seems like a pretty damn big achilles heel.

Except there will still be load times. The mandatory installation is a cover up for the hardware limitations of the Blu-Ray.
So people are actually saying.
Loading times > 30 minute pre-installation of a console game cause by a clumsy hardware restriction.
But 25 minutes? I'm pretty sure if you timed every single loading screen you got from the very start to the very end of the game it wouldn't even total as much as 25 minutes.
Ok,
The madatory installation helps eliminate or reduce load times, which is a great plus for the PS3 version in comparison to the 360 one. Also the only reason why this is not the same for 360 is because not all 360s have HDD and thus companies dont bother.
Also about mandatory HDD at least PS3 owners dont get ripped off having to buy overpriced proprietery HDD.

lol so after ps3 owners buy DMC4, they have to wait 25 minutes to install it, and then have 5GB of thier hard drive taken away from them.....i thought console we're simply "put in the game and play" wth is up with mandatory installations?
Do all ps3 games do this? if so ps3 owners are going to have to get some new or larger hard drives quick.... i feel sorry for the people with 20 gig ps3's, thats 1/4 of your space taken by dmc4, MANDATORY.
Dilrod
At least PS3 owners can buy ANY size hard drive they want if they need to. M$ forces you to buy their over priced 120 gig one. I can buy a 250 gig 2.5" for that price, or even better a 500 gig external and a sata to ide cable for my ps3.
while you will spend money on that 500gig hard drive , my 20gig will do the job :P !

The only reason it is not the same for the 360 version is because it doesn't have the same hardware limitation inflicted by Blu-Ray. It would be a nice feature if it were OPTIONAL. But Sony aren't giving you anything they're making up for the limitations caused by their own hardware. It's not a feature it's a patch to cover up a technical issue.

Both systems have thier problems, but stuff loads alot faster of a HDD then a disk. The fact you have to install a game to make it go faster seems smarter to me, the HDD have plenty of space and you can always upgrade for more if so desired. 360 while being faster due to dvd9 cannot be as fast as stuff being taken from a HDD.
:P Just thought id go over some facts here.
Gamespot says it took them around 20 mins to install the game.
PS3 install is rumoured to be mandatory - thats a rumour though ...
During the install you get to watch a condensed version of the story in DMC3 and DMC1.
360 version will create a cache on the HDD(prob 3 - 5gb), this cache is standard for ALL 360 games. When a 360's HDD is full the cache is written over.
--> if your 360 has no HDD you will have **** load times ...
--> if your 360 has 3 - 5gb of space left you will get load times around the same as the PS3 ver. (installed) ...
In the end this seams resonable, and i can see the 360 version running the condensed ver. of DMC3 + DMC1 story each time the game creates a cache (unless capcom save some perm. data to let DMC4 know not to play that file again.
In the end - ITS NO BIG DEAL.
-- its not a PS3 disadvantage
-- its not a 360 disadvantage
choasgod
So in other words for the 360 it's optional to help reduce load times but it's mandatory in the PS3 version. But isn't the cache cleared anyway? i.e. you don't have to make extra room on your hardrive because it'll do it automatically. When you get the 360 you'll notice that if you get the 20GB versionyou only actually have15GB of memeory to use because5GB is locked off for cached memory.

So actually like the idea of now having to install all your games? As the post a little above this says the 360 also has the same option to install the game to reduce load times. The fact that it has to be mandatory on the PS3 is actually pretty embarrasing for Sony. It looks like mandatory installing could become more and more frequent. Especially since a few recent games require it.
You can have an external hard drive, plugged into the PS3 via USB port. I think Sony sells a 120 gig drive. So my 60 gig + 120 is awesome.caseypayne69What do you do with all that space?

Every 360 doesn't have a HDD
The downside to Blu-ray is a slow read speed, so instead they mainly use the disk to store data that will be instaled on the HD for a more streamlined preformance. Maybe they will be able to come out with a better read speed in the future.Jynxzor
Thats not so much Blu-ray as its just the ps3 using a first gen blu-ray player.
Once you install the game on a HDD, the whole argument for Blu-ray's extra capacity goes out the window. I am not saying installing is bad, but SONY should not have required you to pay so much money for unnecessary hardware when 2 or 3 disks would have served the same purpose.StreetRodJack
No, having the some information on harddrive is a good thing. Especially for devs, hopefully capcom can make DMC4 perform similar to oblivion where the hdd is used as a 4 gig cache instead of an install.

Have to agree there. It's already bad enough that Sony is shoving its new format down peoples throats by using it in the PS3 and forcing the price by a few hundred dollars than it would have been without Blu-Ray. But now it turns out that not only is it not really needed but it's actually a hinderance.
I'll happily take a $100 price cut and the 5 seconds it takes to switch a game disc over a 20 installation.

Why on earth would you constrain you media by storing it on your gamin console?! It's such a bad idea, I can't even begin to describe the reasons why. The PS3 is no more a multimedia machine than the 360 (with the exception of the Blu-Ray drive) if you choose to intelligently utilize your digital media. This happens a lot more often than I would like.
The future of gaming:
1. All games in the future will be installed onto Large Hard drives - consoles and PCs. Optical drives will never be as fast or reliable as Hard-Discs and developers will give up gimping their games to makethem work off slow-spooling ROM drives.
2. Consoles will have all games downloadable. Or you can buy the hard disc in stores and then install it on your console. Eithe rway, you must install the game and manage disc space. Extra Hard Drives will become the new accessory, like controllers and memory cards.
3. There will be no more optical drives for gaming. Just moviesand installation discs.
4. Games will be patched online, when needed.
5. Broadband ISP will be required for gaming PERIOD. Online and offline, for authentication and anti-piracy purposes.
Get ready people - Hard Drive installation will be standard soon for all gaming platforms.
I say, embrace it - the less moving parts inside your boxes, the more reliable your system will be.
Just wait... 25 minutes.
I have a very hard time believing it's really that long. Even 5 minutes should be borderline-acceptable, but 25?. Hell, PSN takes 5-10 minutes to download patches (a 30 sec. task on Live, yes, even recently). PSN content downloads take ages, and don't continue in the background during as many things as 360 background downloads do.
Why is everything on the PS3 so slow?
lowe0
5-10 minutes for a PSN update? Uh, maybe the huge one when they went to 2.0 or whatever, but the normal updates take a minute or so...

How is performing an installation from 2 or 3 disks materially different than installing from a single disk? I am not against installing games and having the data loaded from HDD into RAM. I just do not think you need Blu-ray disks to install software onto the HDD.
My experience with the install feature may be limited solely to Assassins Creed and I can tell you first hand that the reduction in loading time compared to the version on the 360 is fairly minimal.
If install files on games are truly going to be 5 gigs per install, that is a real kick in the teeth for those who bought nearly 600k of the new 40gb unit at Christmas, I don't care how cheap it may be to buy a new Hard Drive, I bought the BIGGEST one I could at launch (60gb) and now I may be forced to upgrade if I want to buy a lot of games?
I don't see DMC 4 as an "expansive" and huge title that would require 5gbs of space, and if it does how much would something like MGS4 take up?
If this is the case, I will opt for the 360 version of DMC4 and the ten seconds of loading between levels.

As has already been said several times it's not a perk or a feature it's a cover up for a technical limitation of the Blu-Ray drive. And as another poster has said the 360 has the same feature. The difference being that the 360 version is optional where as the PS3 version is mandatory.
I do. I can't stand to play the same game too much in a short amount of time, unless it's really, really amazing. I have to space my games out.You can delete game installs... who plays 6 games at once?

You can delete game installs... who plays 6 games at once?
And this is the typical response that I expect from the Sony folks,
Maybe I am the oddball, but at any given times I have a few games sitting on my coffee table.
NHL 08, Madden 08, Tiger Woods, which are games that I can toss in and play when friends are over those are the staples but there are a few more that I often go back to, Motorstorm, Resistence, Warhawk which I have played in the last two weeks
And Uncharted which I am working my way through again, which leaves us at seven within the last 14 days, and I am sure over Christmas my girlfriend played something or other and I am sure that I have gone back to Heavenly Sword within the last month or so just to show off how cool it looks on my new TV same with Lair.
What about games that I have downloaded of PSN? Save Files?
Why should I have to delete game install files? Why should I have to buy a larger hard drive to continue to game the same way I have since the 80's?
Now that I think of it I played Unreal Tournament 3 online for 20 minutes before heading out last Friday, that's eight.
So to answer your question who players more then six games at once? I would suspect most gamers do.
