And in the rest of Europe? France? Poland? Spain? etc. But thats really quite an accomplishment, hopefully the sales don't drop to low. But i'm really more interested in how the software is doing.

"The figure is three quarters of the total 220,000 UK launch stock for day one," But they still failed to sell out. The Wii sold out, they just didn't ship as many.

True, PS3 is so damned expensive right now.

I don't blame the Brits for not buying every single console on shelves.

you expect them to sell 220,000 units in one day? and at £425? this is quite an accomplishment if you ask me.

If the demand for the PS3 was truly as high as it is made out to be in Europe, then it would have sold out. You can't use price as an excuse because the price is Sony's own doing.

not sold out at launch = flop, especially considering the Playstation brand name you fanboys are always bringing up. Guess that brand recoginition isn't as strong as fanboys believe.

If you consider that it was the fastest selling console, not even in the holiday period and with awful television advertising, I think it shows just how strong the brand is.

You say "Let the damage control begin" as if it's a challenge, so I grudgingly accept. If any console had a massive amount of units available on day one, then it would be likely it would sell the fastest. This is because it is not a case of fastest selling - oh no, it is a case of vast availability. Most consoles sell many units at launch, so the more available, the faster they go.

I live in the UK and my local shop got ten, and by sunday at least had sold the grand total of 0. Its understandable though, since I only live in a smallish town most people looking to buy one are going to look into going into one of the bigger local towns to buy one.

As for the rest of europe, according to this article in france 95% of PS3's are left unsold: http://www.playfuls.com/news_06689_PS3s_French_Debut_A_Total_Disaster_95_of_Consoles_Left_Unsold.html

Wii becomes UK's fastest-selling home console ever More than 100,000 units shifted during opening weekend Nintendo and Chart Track have confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that the Wii has become the fastest-selling home console ever, with 105,000 systems already sold. Last week, Nintendo announced that consumers snapped up 50,000 Wii units within 12 hours of the console going on sale. The tills continued to ring over the next two days, making the Wii the first console to sell more than 100,000 units during its opening weekend. In contrast, the GameCube saw sales of 52,000 consoles in the first weekend after launch, while the figure for Xbox 360 stood at 70,000 units. Of the 14 software titles launching with the Wii, six made it into the all-formats top 40 - including Zelda, which debuted at number 5. Other popular titles included Wii Play and Ubisoft's Red Steel. It was also a great week for Nintendo's handheld, with around 110,000 DS units sold, and 14 games in the top 40. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=21645 TC failed, PSP wasnt the fastest selling before the Ps3.

PS3's record-breaking debut for a home console comfortably beats the previous top seller Nintendo Wii, which sold 105,000 after its frantic launch weekend in December last year. Fellow format rival Xbox 360 racked up an estimated 70,000 at launch in December 2005.

Apparently that was thier strategy - to actually have enough units on shelves so people wouldn't get frustrated and get a Wii or 360 instead.

They should have just launched it along with N.A. IMO.

The way sony have anounced the sales figures for UK, but not for the rest of europe (includung france) suggests it may have not done as well there. 95% does sound like a bit of exaduration, but i doubt it did as well as in the UK.

Well it's a possibility. If you don't think there is a small chance that Brits are selling their PS3s like that, than you clearly don't know the economics of ebay ;) Plus it happens with all consoles.

True, it is a reasonable strategy. But with the 360 launch, it was completely sold out for months following the launch. If it had had say.... a million units available on launch day in the UK, it would have broken the record easily.

I am not a hater, but it is not a good thing to have consoles sitting on the shelves the day after launch. That really speaks a lot for the demand when there are PS3's on the shelves the day after launch, but the WIi is still sold out.

Dude what is your standard for high demand. the PS2 outsells the PS3 and 360 every month in NA yet I see them on the shelf every time. The demand is there but its that other part of the equation, SUPPLY, that keeps them in stock so people can buy them.

It just proves that people are buying the PS3 and PSP because of the brand name, not because of games and such.

Are you telling me that theres people outside that buy a system just because it has Playstaion on its name?,just for that?.Wow or you have more money than brains or more money than brains to do that. The reason i dont own NDS or a Ps3 is because i dont like the games.

you expect them to sell 220,000 units in one day? and at £425? this is quite an accomplishment if you ask me.

weren't cows saying it sold 500,000 units on friday?

500,000 for the whole europe.

-Spock-

Apparently that was thier strategy - to actually have enough units on shelves so people wouldn't get frustrated and get a Wii or 360 instead.

They should have just launched it along with N.A. IMO.

True, it is a reasonable strategy. But with the 360 launch, it was completely sold out for months following the launch. If it had had say.... a million units available on launch day in the UK, it would have broken the record easily.

They might have. We will never know.

Anyways, launch numbers are almost completely irrelevant. You can't base your opinion on how a console is going to perform for the next 10 years based on ONE day of sales numbers. Heck, it's hard to base your opinion off of a YEAR of sales. You have to give it at least 2 years....

That goes for Sony fans, AND for Sony haters alike....

That's not much of an accomplishment if the demand isn't very high.

PS3 UK Sales

PSP holds the record for fastest selling handheld and PS3 holds the record for the fastest selling console.

Actually thats exactly what i'm telling you. People in UK are only buying the PS3 because they all had PS2. Its the only reason why anyone would buy it in England really.
