[QUOTE="Warfust"] Use all the facts in your argument. The part that is damning to the PS3 is NOT the sales numbers themselves. It is the fact that they have SYSTEMS SITTING ON THE SHELVES. The Xbox 360 was sold out, and THAT is the difference.Kane04

LOL

if thats true go clame you 1.200USD for each one you find, i can easily find more than 4 stores were there are more than 20 X360 sitting there.

PlayStation 3 enjoys record pre-orders

Advance orders for Sony's highly anticipated PlayStation 3 console have broken all records, with high street stalwart Woolworths revealing it has been taking one order every 20 seconds during the past week.

The state-of-the-art PlayStation 3 will go head-to-head with Microsoft's Xbox 360 when it hits the shops on March 23 and Woolies, one of the first stores to accept pre-orders, has admitted it has been staggered by the demand.

Gerry Berkley, Woolworths' head of games, said, "It's the hottest gaming system since the PS2 launched in 2000 - demand will outstrip supply."

With a retail price of £425, the 60Gb PlayStation 3 costs £125 more in the UK than in the US, but this has failed to deter those determined to try out Sony's latest dream machine.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/a42660/playstation-3-enjoys-record-pre-orders.html

The XBox 360 has been out for almost a year and half. Of course you're going to find them on retail shelves.  All the hype happening in the U.K. is the same hype that happened in Japan & the U.S. No difference. There are all hardcore gamers who are pre-ordering the PS3 in the U.K. and people out to make a profit. Once the PS3 is out for 30days or more in the U.K., lets see how many are sitting on retail shelves. What you are experiencing is what has already happened in the other markets. Even though Sony is launching 1 million PS3 in the U.K., I'll be surprised if they sell out.

Yeah.. same thing happened here in the U.S. and about 1/2 of them ended up on Ebay and then were returned less then 30 days later. Basically what you are saying is meaningless.

when the PS3 launch outsold the X360 launch lemmings said:
 - "thats meaningless, if there were more X360 at her launch it would have sold more than the PS3 did, the fact that it had a more sucessful launch than the X360, and a better one than the PS2 doesnt prove anything"

what are you gonna say when the PS3 overtake X360? cows are ignorants?, if they were smart they would have bought a X360?...

[QUOTE="Grive"][QUOTE="magus-21"]Again, in that generation, Nintendo basically shoved its customers and its developers onto the PS1. As dumb as Sony's been, they haven't been asking developers to pay MASSIVE licensing costs to the point where games would have to cost $70-80 like Nintendo did in the N64 days, and Sony didn't stick to a format that was very clearly outdated and expensive (i.e. cartridges)magus-21

But Sony IS losing developers to the 360 and Wii.

Not to mention, they are sticking to a format that is clearly more expensive.

It's NOT losing developers. It's SHARING developers. BIG difference.

Yes, it has lost developers. Maybe not many of the larger developers like Konami, Capcom or Namco, but several of the smaller developers aren't making games for the PS3 yet. Many of the larger companies have decided to only release 1-2 titles for the first year just to see how sales go. You really need to do some research on these things.

[QUOTE="Telekill"]I see PS3 winning this generation also. Where many competitor supporters see it as a flopped system, it has been doing better than any previous Playstation before it. There is an overwhelming demand for it in EU regardless of the high price. I think that we all need to just sit back and see what happens instead of making up lame threads stating that different systems will flop. The fanboyism is out of control on forums across the net.

my point is, at this rate the PS3 will overtake the X360 by the end of the year.
now dont get me wrong, i dont hate the X360, last gen i had a Xbox, its just i dont find a motive do stand up for the X360 cuz pretty much every body here is up for the X360. so ill defend the PS3.

the PS platforms were allways my favorite, and i got hurt when the MS kill the Xbox too soon, so this gen im only gonna buy a PS3.

the fact that every body is bashing the PS3 prove that the internet, press and other stuff like that didnt change, the Sony platforms were allways bashed, said to be losers at the beggining, and the prove that they were wrong is here:

TOP 3 BEST SELLING CONSOLES OF ALL TIME

PlayStation 2 - 115,36 millions
PlayStation - 106,49 millions
NES - 60 millions

there was never anyone bigger than the PlayStation, never ever.

I also believe it will be a closer contest this time around for all systems.PS3 has yet to release their hit exclusives,It seems like the developers are starting to utilize the power of the 360,and the Wii effect has yet to wear off and might not.So I see it a lot tighter this time.I own a 360 and really want it to succeed.I would be interested in buying a PS3 if it weren't so $$$$.I thought nintendo was going down the same path as Sega when the Gamecube was doing so horribly,but it looks like they got something going with the Wii.I see it within a 5 year range as follows;

1)360

2)PS3

3)Wii

only my opinion.

When PS3 launches in the UK, it'll add even more sales.  When the PS3 has been out for a good year everywhere, we'll see a very large increase in PS3 hardware and software sales.mc2k4

You hope, but you keep forgetting that huge sales will continue for the Wii and XBox 360 as well. Both consoles also have huge titles coming out that people can't wait to get their hands on. A lot of the exclusives that were only on the PS3 will be on the Wii & XBox 360 and those systems will probably be less then what they are when the hot titles get released.

Sega died a long, slow death beginning with the end of the Genesis era. That's a completely different situation from the PS3's superficial PR screwups.

That's of course assuming that the only thing wrong with the PS3 are some "superficial PR screwups" made by Sony reps.

Well it's true. If the XBox 360 launched with 2 million units it would have easily beat out the PS3 in launch sales. You keep forgetting that PS3 were piling up on retail shelves the 1st week of Jan 07. The XBox 360 couldn't be found until almost April. My comments make a lot of sense, whether you like it or not. I never said the PS3 would never take over the XBox 360. I actually have said the opposite several times, but for that to happen the PS3 price would need to drop to a price where casual gamers could buy it. So go and find my other posts where I say this.

I don't see that happening. At least not this year. In 2008 after the PS3's price drop, they'll have a chance to catch the XBox360..maybe. Gotta wait and see if the Wii stays hot or not though. We'll know for sure around this time next year.

I don't think Sony did anything. The only one who killed the Dreamcast was SEGA. The system was far from a flop and I thought it was doing just fine until SEGA pulled the plug on it. I have most of the games for the Dreamcast anyways. I probably own about 85% of the games that were released for the Dreamcast. It's gotta be almost 200 or so titles. Still the Dreamcast had one of the best launch of any console with the titles it released.

PS3 will beat XBOX 360 yes. But Wii is going to be #1 this gen.

-supercharged-

Are you crazy? By the way, the Xbox 360 has been out much longer and made much more money than the Playstation 3 or thw Wii. Yes, Sony is a huge brand name, but do you remember how many times their systems broke. Two of my Playstion 2s broke and my first playstation broke. My xbox amd Xbox 360 have never broken and I've had them for a very long time. Xbox 360 since christmas 2005 and my first xbox at christmas in 2003 or 2004, not sure. Anyways though, The Xbox 360 will win the war, Wii in second place. As for the Playstion 3, I think it'll fail sooner or later.

Sony will not win, not with a $600.00 console, and no software. Every day M$ and nintendo outsell the SONY they guarentee that the devs will port everything and that will kill the PS3.

[QUOTE="magus-21"]The brand-name is just too strong to double-up and die. As bad as all these PR screw-ups have been, they are still only that: PR screw-ups. Sony still has third-party support, it still has more brandname recognition than either the Xbox or Nintendo brandnames, and it still has the strongest multigenerational franchises under its thumb. PR can be fixed in a matter of months, and the public will ignore any PR screwup once those big-name Final Fantasies, MGS's, etc. start coming out. That said, it won't be a landslide like the last two generations. Unlike the PS1 generation, where Nintendo basically pushed all of its customers onto the PS1, and unlike the PS2 generation, where DVD carried PS2 sales for the first year or two, the PS3 has only brandname to rely on. IMO, PS3 @35%, Wii @ 33%, and 360 @ 32% will be the division of marketshare this generation.

i agree that sony will not just double up and die, but they seem to be repeating the mistakes nintendo made in the mid 1990s that knocked them off their throne and put them in last place. not killed them, put them in last place. the same could happen to sony. i have to disagree that sony has more brand name recognition than nintendo, at least in videogaming. and even having more recognition than xbox is debatable.

Here's a quick history lesson for cows (:) ):

Every console priced over $300 has failed.

Consoles traditionally enjoy their best sales at the $200 (and below) price point.

The first console to reach 10million units sold has always won that generation and enjoyed the best developer support.

Cows should be begging Sony for a price cut for the PS3. ;)

SEGA doesn't have the kind of money and resources that SONY has, plus there previuos consoles didn't sell near 100 million+ each (ps1-ps2).

I don't think the brand name applys as much the the USA than it does to Europe, where we think that Sony make the best products (they do to a certain extent),i'm not sure why more than not people here in the UK think that every playstation is god,but i guess it because of games like gran turismo and gta where every kid would want for christmas, also my college buddies don't even know that gta 4 is coming to 360 just because they played gta first on the ps2,and when i told them that gta 4 is actually ocming to 360 the same day of the ps3 version they imediatley said that the ps3 version would be better and bigger, which i doubt it will, but it might be better.

Anyway on to the topic lol i know ps3 will win this gen come late 2008 because of the great games that come out then, hell even i pla nto get a ps3 in 2008 because of its lineup then.

lets see your arugements are the old: 1. Brand Name - this was true for nintendo during snes as well. and atari before it. 2. Franchises - Most of the big name franchises aren't under sony's thumb. they don't own the rights. once again look at nintendo. also the titles you named aren't going to come out till 08. by then I seriously doubt you'll see much in the way of changing positions in marketshare. Look at psp and ds. it doesn't matter that MGS OP came out for psp now. it's over.

Brand name doesn't hold alot of weight to it. Alot of people are referring to Sega back in the day and people are refusing it as legit because they say " Well Sega didn't sell as many consoles as Sony has."Well um....no duh...but back in the day Sega was the ****! But then along came the next-gen hardware and Sega tried their hand in it with the Saturn and then the Dreamcast both of which were very powerful systems at their time, yet they failed. Sega had a huge fanbase yet they failed. Same could happen to Sony. Last couple of generations Sony has been the top-dog but with this new generation there comes a new battle and it's called $. You have a system that's the most expensive on the market with no top notch exclusive titles as of this point. Sure Sony has MGS and FF to look forward to, but that's about it. Other than that it's all games that can be found on the 360 as well and the 360 being $200 cheaper it's hard to justify getting a PS3 over a 360. Let's just look at let's say Oblivion...why would I pay $600 to play it on a PS3 when I can pay $400 and play the same game on a 360. Because it's got the name Sony on it? Sorry but uh no thanks I'll pass. Companies cannot depend on their name alone to sell product and right now that's all Sony has...their name... and it's just not enough to win the overall battle, not this generation. Unless Sony either A) Price-drops (and quick) or B) Buys up some franchises (like they did with the GTA series for PS2) they're just not going to be able to own the market like they did in yester-gen.

No, the 360 has actually made LESS money than the Wii. :P You forgot that the Wii costs about $100-150 to manufacture, yet is sold for $200, not to mention the additional $50 for Wii Sports in the US. The 360, on the other hand, was LOSING $125 or so for at least six months, perhaps as much as nine months, since its launch. In terms of overall numbers, the 4 million Wii units sold plus games have all contributed more net profit than all the 360s sold plus games.

[QUOTE="Ontain"]lets see your arugements are the old: 1. Look at psp and ds. it doesn't matter that MGS OP came out for psp now. it's over.

1. As the OP pointed out, Nintendo experienced a slow decline over the years, not a sharp drop. Besides, neither manufacturer had nearly as much success as Sony did with the Playstation brandname. Seriously, 200 million PS1 and PS2 units sold. You can take every other home console in existence since the first Atari, and their combined sales probably wouldn't reach that high. 2. They don't own the rights to those franchises, but those franchises have not abandoned the PS3. 3. MGSPO came out over two years after the PSP's launch. Two years is too late to influence the console war. But six months? One year? That's more reasonable. Now, if those big franchises are delayed yet again to 1.5 years after the PS3's launch, THEN it's in trouble.

I generally agree, but after reading through this thread I think there's one more factor to take into account: product awareness. Not simply brand-name. Brand name applies to a range of products, but product awareness applies to a single product, and God knows, everyone is aware of the PS3. The Wii and Xbox 360 are making tons of headway, but they fight an uphill battle, especially the Wii. Secondly, I would like to remind everyone that the PS3 ending up with only half the marketshare that its predecessors is a victory, but a poor victory.

[QUOTE="-supercharged-"]

[QUOTE="Spartan070"]Nintendo has more recognition and always will as lond as they are in the console and handheld race. Plus a lot of those "multigenerational franchises" like RE and GTA are now multiplat.LosDaddie

So?

How many copies of GTA: SA sell on the PS2 compared to the XBOX? Oh ya that's right no XBOX game even broke 10million copies sold  While GTA: SA sold what 14+ MILLION?

I can guarantee you that a higher percentage of Xbox owners bought GTA SA than did PS2 owners.

It's the attach ratio that counts. ;)

Of course they have a higher ratio. They had no other game to play besides Halo.
