Basically sony knows if microsoft releases a new system within the next 2-3 years they will be totally screwed. They havent even recuperated all the losses on the PS3 yet and to release a new system so soon would probably be the end for sony. This external processor may be their only option. But i think they should have an external processor/gpu instead.

That bit about "PS3.5" is complete speculation. In fact it doesn't make any sense, considering the PS3 doesn't have any high-bandwidth external ports.

Have console add-ons ever done well?

supa_badman
Yes, the n64 had a cartrige(I forget the name) that was required to play most of the later games for the n64 like majora's mask and dk64. I also laugh at console extremists that laugh at pc gamers for having to upgrade the hardware, oh the sweet irony.

The best thing to do is release a PS4 and a PS3 upgrade kit. I believe most gamers are smart enough to use a simple upgrade kit if it equates to a cheaper PS4 alternative. Similarly, I think the same tactic would apply for the game cube. The difference is that Nintendo wanted a new image but I don't think this applies to Sony.

Uh oh, looks like PS3 owners will have to upgrade their hardware if they want to play the latest games.

I kid, I kid.

-

That is probably not the best move by Sony. I could be wrong, but releasing something like this may alienate some of the consumers as Sega did with the 32X and Nintendo did with the Nintendo 64 red expansion pack thing.

Not gonna happen. The only way this would be viable is if sony somehow managed to upgraded the USB to the new 3.0 version in order to transfer the data processed by the external processor.

This "Expansion Pak"

"The add-on was released in 1999 and contains 4MB RDRAM, the same type of memory used inside the console itself."

Even the Nintendo DS Lite had one to work with the web browser:

If its something like the expansion pack i can see it working...kinda, but if it turns out to be like what Sega did....well they're gonna be in trouble. Also how can they do that with a tiny little USB port? Isn't that like only....60mb/s theoretical? onlyway i can see this working is if sony gives instructions on how to open up ur PS3 & add an adapter like the expresscard adapters for laptops. lol. i think this was just a little idea that they had and decided to patent it just incase. i highly doubt they will use this.

No thanks. Just keep releasing great games and release the PS4 in a couple of years or so. I am fine with this gen lasting that long, but I always look forward to the next generation of consoles. It's like a tradition for most of us, so don't deprive us of that. Just go all out and eventually give us the PS4.

n64 did it kind of . It's a similar situation actually since nintendo forcasted the need for the graphics upgrade chip because the n64 had terrible textures, and sony could have predicted that it's weak GPU (if i remember that right) might be a problem

Sony is definitely taking a risk if they do it, it might be good for some, but that can be very confusing to the casual customer which is the market that is producing the most money. I ll get it day 1 and would like it too.

Not a good idea, this will split the community too much if games require it. They've already split it with the move to an extent this will just split it more. (Assuming it's real and required to play some games).

If true, were are you going to plug it in? The PS3 has no external ports to support such a thing.

it seems like an attractive idea but it will look clumsy and if microsoft releases a new console in response then most people would probably rather just get that. It sounds like something a bit more significant than the n64 chip

PS3, trying to become more and more like a proprietary PC.

^This. Miss the days of the PS2 when you could just insert a disk and play away. Now it's all these installations and firmware updates that do a good deal to detract from the experience.

Nope, what the patent describes sounds nothing like any kind of add-on for a console. But the news sites have spun it as "OMG PS3.5!" and everyone seems to be running with that. :P

its a plausible idea though. Cell working with another unit using one of its SPE's or splitting the SPE's would get you some crysis results. I think if its not going to cost a ton to manufacture its an idea...

Wow. This could prove interesting. We've recently seen Sony move an INCREDIBLE amount of PSP by a single game release. It's certainly possible that this add-on(if it's true) could be bundled with a massive title, to ensure sales.

No it's not. The patent describes distributed processing across a matrix (large grid) of processors connected with a high-speed bus with specialized hardware for maintaining cache coherency. Not something for connecting traditional processors over a low-bandwidth external connection.

It already failed once (not to mention the numerous other attempts on many other consoles)... I'm surprised Sony is actually attempting it again.

Hmm, if this is true I wonder if they'd release a new revision of the PS3 with this addon built in. That way I could replace the PS3 phat. Absolutely great machine, but a lot of heat (Doesn't red ring though!,) and weighs a bit. Does have a fair bit of noise too.

This isn't a new idea. External graphics processors made to connect to laptops technically work in a similar manner. The thing is, what port would this external processor connect to on the PS3? Will it send data back into the PS3? Is this a graphics processor, or an augment to the Cell? With the crappy bandwidth of USB 2.0 or the Ethernet port, there is no point. Maybe the SATA port for the HDD could work but where would you put the HDD?

So, i paid 560 euro to get a PS3 at launch for FF13, PS3 looses FF13, looses Project Dark (the only coming exclusive i cared about) and now they make me buy a new 200$ hardware to play its games ??????????????????

And they dont even deliver in multipkltforms and Alan Wake has 10x better visuals than any PS3 exclsive ?

I think this would be the ULTIMATE Sony fail, i would sell my PS3 in an instant and never look back at Sony systems ever again
