I'm fine with Sony doing that. Buying the peripheral will probably be cheaper than buying another console

As many said before: This never worked in the past and Sony doesn't have any fast enough external ports for this to work as intended
[QUOTE="Bus-A-Bus"]teh cell is maxed!!! oh noes :o :PIf they really did that it would prove that:

but the power of "teh cell"!!!!
I find it to be stupid to have external CPU. How would the external CPU communicate with the internal one? USB? :lol:abuabed
You underestimate the power of...TEH CELL! jkjk :P
hahahahaha what
you dont just slap a cpu into a box and slam a usb port onto it. it doesnt work that way

That's still not enough to make full(not even 50%) use of the external CPU. You'll need a much higher bandwidth to utilize an external CPU which is why we don't have any external CPUs/GPUs on PC.[QUOTE="ronvalencia"][QUOTE="abuabed"]I find it to be stupid to have external CPU. It doesn't answer Abuabed 's "we don't have any external CPUs/GPUs on PC" claim.the expansion pack for n64 was brilliant. You couldn't even see it as they designed all n64 systems beforehand for this kinda thing. With the ps3 there is no where to put the external processor except for an external USB connection. Another issue is price. Nintendo gave expansion packs away for FREEEEEEE with Donkey Kong 64...(a great game btw). This external processor sounds expensive.
Lol
talk about trying to hard to be a pc.
People already compair the PS3 to pc, why make it more compairable?
At TC. The patent includes "In accordance with one or more embodiments, the multi-processor system may be implemented as a single-chip solution operable for stand-alone and/or distributed processing of media-rich applications, such as game systems, home terminals, PC systems, server systems and workstations". Sony's patent includes other systems besides game systems.
PS; Sony's patent is in conflict with
1. AMD's HyperTransport based multi-co-processor setups and XGP external GPU setups..
2.Intel/PCI-SIG's PCI Express External Cabling standardhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#PCI_Express_External_Cabling
I actually didn't know people are still using external GPUs/CPUs these days. Thought they all perished since they perform badly compared to the internal ones. Nonetheless we'll get less performance with an external CPU/GPU compared to an internal one. and for a PS3 if you don't have a wireless network or prefer to connect it with a wire you'll have to sacrifice that one Ethernet port for a little eye candy.
EDIT: I see my "no PC external GPUs/CPUs" made quite a mess :P It should have been "we don't usually use external CPUs/GPUs" and that is for performance sake. They are available, that's true but they perform poorly in comparison.
ethernet dudeThat bit about "PS3.5" is complete speculation. In fact it doesn't make any sense, considering the PS3 doesn't have any high-bandwidth external ports.
Teufelhuhn
[QUOTE="Teufelhuhn"]ethernet dude Yeah, that's slow for main components like CPU, memory..etc. It does work of course but it's not the usual way of connecting CPUs to mobos....and is slower. That bit about "PS3.5" is complete speculation. In fact it doesn't make any sense, considering the PS3 doesn't have any high-bandwidth external ports.
Plagueless
[QUOTE="Teufelhuhn"]ethernet dude Riiiiiiiiight. Nowhere near enough bandwidth. Ethernet works great as an interconnect for clusters where you can dump a computationally-intensive job into queue and pick it up later, but for real-time processing under 33ms (30 fps), I don't think it's going to work. Unless Sony hid an InfiniBand port on there that I'm not aware of, this just isn't gonna happen. That bit about "PS3.5" is complete speculation. In fact it doesn't make any sense, considering the PS3 doesn't have any high-bandwidth external ports.

I already have a pc, and pc game library stinks. keyboard and mouse sucks for gamingThey can add an external processor to help increase the processing power, but how can they get around the bottleneck on the main bus that reduces their overall throughput of data? The extra processed information will still take the same time to get to the ocmponents of the console, so its more like PS3.25 instead of PS3.5...
It needs two things, a stand alone physics processor, and a better video card (and a ram upgrade could not hurt) and then it would be a huge addon. It would also be a PC.
Why couldn't they release something like this, and games made after its on the market would be developed to take advantage of the extra horsepower. Sorta like how all pc games don't look the greatest unless you have the latest and badess gpu. So joe blow without the addon, plays his normal ps3 game, while people with it gets an overall boost. If done like this no one is missing out on a great game but the people such as myself that would buy the addon would be playing a ps3 game on steroids lol.
I wonder if Sony would impliment this addon with this kind of strategy?

Total nonsense and most likely just Sony experimenting with what's capable these days, no need to get hopes up or quit gaming because you might need to buy it someday.. Most likely never gonna happen. That bit about "PS3.5" is complete speculation. In fact it doesn't make any sense, considering the PS3 doesn't have any high-bandwidth external ports.

Its mostly the fact people are used to keyboard these days and find it better but its a large slab with buttons on it not designed with gaming in mind and i'm a pc gamer so not like i'm just a console fanboy, as for library you're wrong it has way way more and better games than consoles.Lol

Yes that was what I was thinking lmao... I think me and you are the only ones in this topic that has this view in mind.Nope. It fragments the install base, and increases the complexity of development. Better off spending the money on performance enhancements in the software stack, which doesn't have these problems. Besides, Sony is already having enough trouble with hardware security; an interconnect is just going to add another attack vector. Why couldn't they release something like this, and games made after its on the market would be developed to take advantage of the extra horsepower. What was all the other pointless crap?UCF_KnightOh god, where do I start? - Unremovable App icons in the XMB - PSHome - PSMove - (removing) OtherOS (and removing it retroactively) - Half-assed 3D support that requires an overpriced TV and equally overpriced glasses - a "Photo app" that is no different from the core photo viewer already part of the ps3's OS - a "video uploader" when no games actually support recording video of gameplay to have content worth sharing.
We're talking about the same company that has made about eight different versions of the same memory stick standard, at least fourteen (!!!!) internal revisions of the same PlayStation 2, more than a dozen different ps3's to begin with (most of which are token changes at best), was founded by Krazy Ken and is now being run by his puppet, Kaz Hirai. You bet your ass they're crazy enough to go this route, and in all likelyhood, will. *notices your avatar* oh, and... YOU're fired! If they really did that it would prove that:
1.PS3 and Sonys "theory" about 10 year old slow burning plan will fail without adding more power to actually push them above competition.
2.PS3 is maxed and they dont have money to go into new console year or two from now.
3.They are crazy.
Yea...its not gonna happen. No freakin way its gonna happen.
Bus-A-Bus
It also ignores the key weakness of the ps3. In going bluray this gen, they also had to settle with a very low-speed BD drive, which simply can't deliver data from their discs fast enough... especially since Sony arbitrarily requires every ps3 game to be on a BluRay, even when it didn't need the extra space. Thus ps3 games get mandatory installs just to perform on parity with a 360 game running entirely off its DVD drive, while most games on 360 then ripped to the hard disk will load and play faster still. the ps3 desperately needed a faster-speed BD drive to have made appreciable use of its strengths. All the power in the world can't help if the data isn't getting to the hardware fast enough. And that is why the ps3 needed to break out of Sony's jail.Bad idea, really bad idea.
