PS4 dominates Xbox One in UK + Knack > Mario

Sony's PlayStation 4 is the fastest-selling console in UK history, according to official sales figures.

Chart-Track said PS4 beat the eight-year record help[sic] by Sony's PlayStation Portable, which launched in 2005 to the tune of 185,000 sales. PS4 beat Xbox One, which launched on 22nd November, and its predecessor PlayStation 3.

PS4 exclusive Knack debuts at 13 ahead of Super Mario 3D World on Wii U at 14. Yes, Knack sold more than Mario.

PlayStation 4 UK launch sales hit 250k

UPDATE: An industry source has told Eurogamer that life-to-date Wii U sales in the UK are still around the 150,000 mark after a year on sale.

That's around 100,000 less than PlayStation 4 managed in its opening weekend.

Xbox One sales are now up to the 170,000 mark, Eurogamer was told. It was reported last week that Xbox One had notched up around 150,000 units during its launch weekend, suggesting around 20,000 more have been shifted in the last week.

ORIGINAL STORY: The numbers are in and Sony has been crowned king of the next-gen launches - PlayStation 4 sold a whopping 250,000 units in the UK over the weekend.

That's around 100,000 more than Xbox One sold over its launch a week ago, MCV reports.

The numbers are even bleaker for Nintendo - its year of Wii U sales have now been trounced in a weekend by both next-gen machines.More people bought a PS4 and a copy of Knack over the weekend than bought a Wii U at any point over the past year and new release Super Mario 3D World.

lol just fucking lol at the wii... Did they give hard sales numbers? With the Euro launch of PS4 and PS4 and Xbone both restocking and selling out again on black Friday I reckon both systems are between the 2-3 million mark already

The WiiU will be in last place worldwide by the start of Spring IMO. Can't believe Nintendo completely botched that year head start.

Mario is my top game this year, I think...but I need to seriously look at my 2013 games. It's definitely my most anticipated.

Knack was decent if you like platformers. It has an old school PS2 platforming taste, but for a PS4 game it wasn't ambitious enough in the gameplay dept. Rather by the numbers platforming, but fun for what it is.

Mario should have won...this is why SALES =/= QUALITY. Less threads on sales now, SW? Huh?

Look at Wonderful 101, that did TERRIBLE in sales as well...new IPs have a rough run, but Nintendo hardly promoted or marketed it. I wouldn't be surprised if Kamiya makes his next major game on a different platform.

Still, it's going to be one of those "GAMES YOU SHOULD HAVE PLAYED BUT DIDN'T KNOW EXISTED" articles in 2016 or whatever. I still miss Phantom Dust on Xbox, I wish that would get a sequel.

A combination of usual Sony propaganda + general lack of games upon its launch can make wonders. Even if it was a game 10x worse than Knack, the amount of copies sold would be no less because of Sony Mythology™.

Over 250k PS4 consoles were sold in the UK in the machine’s first 48 hours on sale.

Retail sources have confirmed the extent of PS4’s tremendous performance to MCV following Chart-Track’s confirmation this morning that PS4 is the UK’s fastest selling console ever.

MCV estimates that UK PS4 sales reached approximately £87m during this period.

Xbox One sold in the region of 150k units in its first 48 hours on sale.

This means that the current-gen trio (which until recently referred to as ‘next-gen’) already enjoys an install base of around 600k units in the UK. Both PS4 and Xbox have already comfortably outsold Nintendo’s Wii U, which was released in the UK over a year ago.

@danabo: Okay. Now I'm concerned about Wii-U. If the most iconic character in gaming got outsold by a bargain bin launch title, then something has gone seriously wrong over at Nintendo.

That's good for Sony.

I wouldn't be too concerned. SM3DW sales will pick up over the Christmas period, as will the Wii U sales. And if the Wii U sales don't pick up, a new Nintendo console may come sooner rather than later. It's not like they're in a Sega situation where they can't afford to 'lose'.

I'm predicting that the PS4 will stay ahead of Xbox One at a 3:2 ratio in the UK at least, which will in turn force MS to compete with software/price cuts.

I'm certainly looking forward to a generation 'dominated' by the PS4 a lot more than the one which was dominated by the Wii.

How so?

They'd release said system in the middle of the gen. By then, people will be too adapted to the other systems, making them ill-prepared for another console from a major contender. It won't matter even if Nintendo had the most powerful hardware.

X1 and PS4 have royally owned Wii U in games and sales.
No more casuals and sales card for Nintendo.

It depends how long they wait, no? The 360 had a year head start on the PS3 and they hold similar marketshare. Would a new Nintendo console revealed at next year's E3 followed by a launch next holiday negate any foothold the new consoles have? I don't know, but I do know that both Sony and Microsoft have for the first time released hardware that is out of date before they launched. A Nintendo console that is more powerful than it's competitor's with their first party titles would certainly be hard to resist, for me.

This probably has more to do with what console it's on rather than people liking Knack over Mario lol... PS4 is just that popular at the moment.

well if PS4 is sold out because of unnatural demand I guess if you're desperate what else can you do but buy an XB1. Lol @ no-one thinks to buy a Wii-U though. Nintendo am cry :(
