I doubt Sony buys them on newegg. They buy them in large numbers so they pay even less per card.

Its not the PS4s GPU, which is what you state in your tipic title.

The PS4s custom GPU is: a 1.84 TFLOPS, AMD Radeon Graphics Core Next engine -- so it could be based off of something else, it would not be that something else

It's the closest example, but not the same.

7850: 1024 SPs, 64 TMUs, 32 ROPs, 153GB/s bandwidth.
PS4 :
1152 SPs, 72 TMUs, 32 ROPs, 176GB/s bandwidth.

(higher is better)

Also, for PC you need higher than the console equivalent.

Quit living in the past man !

But yeah, it was quite disappointing to see how no 'next gen' game blew away a 'current gen' PC game as was the case last time new consoles were introduced with Killzone 2 on PS3.

I still don't think a lot of people understand the word "custom" and seem to think that an off the shelf part is equivalent to the PS4 GPU, sure it might be comparable in some ways but not very many. Here I came into a thread thinking AMD had lowered the cost to Sony or maybe the increased production was having a leeching effect on other GPUs but no, all we got was a sale at Newegg.

X1 and PS4 GPU's will never be available to PC gamers, as they are custom chips....

Heck, they do not even have seperate memory from system memory, it is all one unified addresss space.

One slightly more powerful than the 360 due the OS overhead and API difference? I'm just assuming.

Good lord, people really believe this stuff? While the PS4's GPU is close to an off the shelf type of GPU, it is NOT the same thing. It is a custom made APU (CPU/GPU on 1 die) that can not be purchased right off of the shelf. If Sony is 'getting' these from anywhere, it is from AMD themselves, or at the least one of AMD's manufacturers. So to clear things up, the PS4 does not have just a GPU that you can go purchase anywhere at all. These are custom designed parts...same for the Xbone.

nop, console optimization is just a myth regardless of the modifications these consoles have, examples of that are old PC games that thanks to console optimization should look or run better thanks to that and equivalent PC hardware should lack behind n that's not the case.

I don't see how there could not be optimization in a consoles production life, nor do I see how a PC running a game differently than console that has different hardware is an indication of anything whatsoever.

Frankly though, since no console manufacturer will ever tell us how they build their consoles we have no way of knowing one way or the other.

All we know is that consoles are built to exact specifications and then the games are built to run on those specifications.

Sony likely pay AMD around $20 per APU but of course they are buying them in the millions, an entire PS4 probably costs in the region of $250 for Sony to manufacture. Same goes for MS, although the cost for X1 is probably higher with the Kinnect.

Before anyone asks, I have no proof just logical supposition and the ability to make wild guesses. ;)

[QUOTE="clyde46"][QUOTE="True_Gamer_"][QUOTE="clyde46"] The 360 was more powerful than anything on the market when it launched.

Can u say same thing about November 2013?

Nope.

So whats the reason for PC gamers not to celebrate? The cost advantage of consoles is nullified. I can bet that if this trend continues PS5 will have a $60 equivalent GPU in it.

I doubt Sony buys them on newegg. They buy them in large numbers so they pay even less per card.
