Killzone- Mediocre franchise. Running below 30fps
Knack- Children's game Running at 30fps
Drive Club- Poor man's Forza. Also running at 30fps
What reason is there to buy a PS4 at launch?

Why are you so afraid of people buying a PS4? Is it really your concern?
to answer this thread I'll use an argument I've seen xbox fans use.

Happy?
From what I've read they're targeting 1080p/60fps for DriveClub. Although even if they reach that goal it'll be inferior to Forza. Not fussed about Knack playing at 30fps, but it would have been nice if they lowered the resolution on killzone to 720p to achieve 60fps. 60fps is priority for online shooters imo.

Anyone know why Sony can't achieve 60fps on these firsty party titles? With the apparent hardware advantage surely games should run at 1080p/60fps.

DDR5 has latency issues. Forza is running at 60fps and so is Killer Instinct. They are both gorgeous games.

Someone sure as hell better tell that to the people spending upwards of $1000 to get graphics cards with GDDR5! Quick, people! Alert Anandtech!

You're judging games half a year before the system is even released and don't even know if they are current builds or not. and I thought Forza was supposed to be a simulator. Shouldn't it try its best not to skimp out on factors like weather that could seriously affect driving in a race?[QUOTE="Miketheman83"][QUOTE="ElectricEchoes"]DDR5 has latency issues. I agree completely neither console has compelling titles. X1 has a lot of mixed comments about some of their launch titles. PS$ has one or two interesting titles, but they all struggle to get to 30 fps @ 1080p. NEXT GEN!!!! HERP DERP!!!! I would rather wait a year or so to see how the libraries play out. Not to mention that each company will be supporting the current gen for some time.[QUOTE="Bigboi500"]
I see no reason to buy a PS4 or Xbox One @ launch.

Shouldn't it try its best not to skimp out on factors like weather that could seriously affect driving in a race? Judging? I merely stated that nobody buys a racing game because it has dynamic weather/crowds. To elaborate, I will purchase a racing game based on how it plays, that's priority. Other contributing factors like weather are good, but if the gameplay is poor I don't care. If you want to moan about people judging games or even systems half a year before release, then please, go search through the threads on SW's and have fun replying. If there is anything to go by, then Forza is an established and proven franchise, arguably the best racing sim of all time.I see no reason to buy a PS4 or Xbox One @ launch.

Just out of curiosity. What's wrong with 30fps?
Szminsky
Nice explanation there. You know your sh*t, that's for sure! :)
There is nothing terribly wrong with 30fps. However, it will make certain games seem less smooth compared to 60fps. Its noticable, but not a huge deal for most console gamers, as 60fps is not the norm. It is just funny that the PS4 games struggle to hit 60fps @1080p, when these consoles are suppose to be next gen. Especially when 1080p is old tech and 1440p and 1600p are starting to be used by PC gamers.Just out of curiosity. What's wrong with 30fps?

Nothing really, it's just that when it drops from there you start dipping into the low 20's and high teens, which is noticeable to most people and will break immersion. 30 fps itself is certainly playable.
It's not bad. For most games, it is perfectly acceptable and is generally a sign that the effects of the game are turned up in such a manner as to work the system (That, or the game code is unoptimized, but we can assume the former as opposed to the latter in most cases). I'm not aware as to whether the Gears of War games ever ran at 60fps on console. KillZone, to me, seems to play like a First-Person Gears-like game. It has the pop-and-drop shooting mechanics as well as the "weightiness" of movement. Some people like it, some people don't. Expecting it to go for 60fps is slightly disingenuous considering it does not play at all like a Counter-Strike or Unreal type FPS whatsoever.I still want an answer to why 30fps is bad. Anyone?

Thanks for the reply. I understand that certain games are preferable at 60fps. But I mean, Ramping up the fps means dumbing down the gfx fidelity right? I am no tech specialist, so I wouldn't know, but it makes sense no? Lets say guerilla games took out some particle effects, physics etc in their newest game, wouldn't they be able to ramp it up to 60fps? To me all of this seems like its all a developer decision from an aesthetic point of view.
...eh...
Though I will more likely invest in a PC this generation, the ps4 is a contender...I won't even consider a xbox dOne even now that they have went back on all their anti consumer bullshit.

Those are some good questions, Szminsky. Unfortunately, I do not have the knowledge to answer those questions. However, I think it would be up to the developer to either spend more time optimizing the game to reach 60fps, or maybe cut some eye candy, as you said. There is nothing terribly wrong with 30fps. That's more or less exactly the point. To give you a frame of reference (pardon the pun), the movies you watch at the cinema are shown at 24fps. The rule of thumb in game design is that dipping below 24fps is unacceptable in any scenario. So, games like JRPGs that don't have a whole lot of action that isn't scripted are generally pretty close to that but extremely high on the eye candy. Games like twitch-kill FPSes (Call of Duty) you want as many frames as you can achieve as a goal and then try to optimize your graphics fidelity to look appealing while maintaining that frequency due to the play mechanics. There is nothing terribly wrong with 30fps. However, it will make certain games seem less smooth compared to 60fps. Its noticable, but not a huge deal for most console gamers, as 60fps is not the norm. Yes you are correct. I believe the original Bioshock allowed people to lower some kind of general graphics settings for higher framerate. And of course on PC people pick and choose according to their own preferences and what their rig can handle. On consoles 30 fps is more or less the status quo while 60 fps is a bit rare.
Of course jumping into a new gen people are expecting more and more, so consoles not able to handle 1080p resolutions with higher framerates despite all the PR talk about how next gen and powerful they are is amusing to a few, notably PC gamers.
