PS4 ram drama

Some sort of drama is underway with the Playstation 4, the article would have been out today but it's delayed until tommorow because Sony is "preparing statements".

RAM Downgrade incoming?

GDDR5 has reported to be a problem with some devs, it fails at doing small tasks & has insanely high latency 
But so did N64 & somewhat PS2, devs worked around it, I seriously doubt this is a heat issue, so im not sure what it is.

Perhaps they are doing DDR3 for main system ram & GDDR5 for the VRAM, which would be much better, devs would love Sony long time for that.

PS4's memory bus can only do around 2gb's of VRAM efficiently, anymore & performance starts to go down the drain, 3gb's of VRAM at best can be used, so having the whole system use 8gb's of GDDR5 ram when the APU can't really use more than 3gb's as VRAM, was kind of stupid.

If it is a downgrade some people won't be happy and it's probably a launch date delay for some european countries.

If it IS a downgrade, it'll be because they realized they can't secure 8 Gigs of GDDR5 in the volumnes they need.

I predicted it would be difficult.

It might have somehting to do with how the CPU and GPu access the RAM vs the actual RAM amount, however.

Really it could be anything. Might as well wait till tomorrow.

Extremely unlikely to be a hardware revision at this stage, specially given the PS4 just passed through FCC certification. The hardware is locked down, if it's bad news then it will be something to do with manufacturing. At worst a delayed launch in Europe due to lower than expected supplies of RAM or something along those lines. Maybe that analyst that claimed the Xbox One would have 2-3x as many units available at launch had some legit info after all? Of course it could turn out to be nothing, but it would be nice for the Lems after months of bad news to have something to bash cows with :)JamDev

Sounds like it might be referencing the 20GB/S bandwidth limit from RAM <==> CPU.  The 178GB/S is only for the GPU.

But this actually isnt news at all.  Its been known for a while this exists, and infact 20GB/S is more than enough for CPU centric algorithms.  

Seems like someone without a lot of technical knowledge caught wind of this and thought it was something new.

Every Playstation console has launched in Japan before Europe. This time I think its a case of Sony needing to compete. They know they'll win Japan anyway, so they focus getting as many units as they can in Europe / NA
