PS4 Sold (Not Shipped) 6.2 Million Units This Holiday Season, Total Sales Now 53.4 Million; Uncharted 4 8.7 Million

SAN MATEO, Calif., Jan. 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) today announced robust sales for PlayStation®4 (PS4™) computer entertainment system and its software titles this holiday. That includes:

• PS4 has sold through more than 6.2 million units during the 2016 holiday season*1.
• PS4 has now cumulatively sold through more than 53.4*2 million units globally as of January 1, 2017.
• PS4 software sales also remained strong during the 2016 holiday season with more than 50.4 million copies*3 sold in retail stores worldwide and through digital downloads on PlayStation®Store as of January 1, 2017. UNCHARTED 4: A Thief's End reached a cumulative sell through of more than 8.7 million copies globally*4 as of December 21, 2016.

I expected the PS4 to reach lifetime sales of around 53 million by the end of the year. Uncharted 4 has sold well but I thought it would sell a bit more then 8.2 million by the end of the year even with it being full priced almost all of the time since it's launch . It should outsell UC3 by a few million by the end of this generation.

Shit UC4 again. No wonder this psx felt like milk Naughty Dog all over the place. They also had the hottest bundle out with ps4 slim.

I'd assume so, I'm pretty sure every base PS4 came with the game during the holidays, at least every one I personally saw when out and about.

That UC4 bundle probably made up a good chunk of the sales in the U.S. I'm not sure if there was a bundle elsewhere though. Both the PS4 and Uncharted 4 have exceeded my expectations sales wise this past holiday. Good work Sony.

I am sure it does include bundles like Halo and other games as well,and no not all PS4 sold were bundle with Uncharted many were sold with COD,and other games as well.

So any one picking a Uncharted bundle over a COD one did so because it wanted to.

One thing I want to point out is that there were more PS4 sold when Uncharted 4 launched then Xbox One's sold when Halo 5 launched.

That's still true today. Uncharted benefits from being on a system with a larger install base and pretty much having a genre all its own(how many cinematic treasure hunter franchises are there with POP mechanics? Tomb Raider is the only one that comes to mind)

That said, congrats to Uncharted 4 selling so much.

And no, I'm not using the smaller install base of the Xbox One or Halo being a FPS game(of which tons of games exist that compete with Halo) as an excuse. All I was pointing out that its doubtful Halo 5 or even Halo 6 will surpass Uncharted's sales.

At this point, the best Microsoft can hope for is to get second place and keep their install base happy. There is no catching up at this point, no matter what Microsoft does. Best game plan for Microsoft is to stay the course and accept the loss while building themselves a decent base of gamers.

Every generation has a single system that surges to the front of the pack and never looks back. The PS4 joins the same class as the Atari 2600, NES, PS1, PS2, and Wii. Nintendo is out of this generation in the home console market and Microsoft can't catch up.

Best gameplan for Microsoft is to regroup and wait for the next generation to start. This time, maybe they won't lose most of their fans with asine DRM polices and pushing the Xbox as an all-in one media center.

Correct. In which case this number is not some outrageously crazy number. Surely, Sony waited until after the holiday season when the majority of bundles sold included Uncharted and reported their numbers. This is not a dishonest thing, it's just silly to act like this is some number that shows "proof" of anything. Better proof of success would be how many people are playing Uncharted after completing the campaign. But alas Sony boys will dismiss anyone who brings context.

I'd say the software sales in particular are quite impressive. Apprently 15 million more than last year (~35million games in 2015 during the same period).

Microsoft took the summer and early fall, but Sony is back again!

I actually think the UC4 number is interesting.

If the PS4 sold 6.2 million this holiday, and UC4 has now hit 8.4 million, that either mans a) they are not counting PS4 UC4 bundle sales (very unlikely), b) UC4 had only sold 2.2million copies before the holiday, c) many of the PS4 sales were not the PS4 UC4 bundle*

*which could suggest big sales of OG PS4 units, non-UC4 slims overseas, and/or give hints that the Pro is doing ok (since it was not bundled with UC4)

I think it's pretty clear that the game had sold around 4 million or so prior, sold probably another few hundred thousand during and the rest are a culmination of bundle tie in's.

@dynamitecop: yeah I don't usually follow sales numbers so I didn't know. Still, if it had sold ~4.2million before the holiday, gained 2.2 over the holiday, and 6.2million PS4s sold over the holiday, that means at most 2.2million PS4 sales were UC4 bundle sales, no?

That means 4+million PS4 sales were some unspecified mixture of overseas (non-UC4 bundle), OG, and PS4 Pro

Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning has said that PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida has expressed uncertainty as to whether there will be a PlayStation 5.

Lanning made the comments on the Game Informer Show where he said he asked a question about the possible future console ahead of an on-stage interview between the two:

"I said, 'well, what does the PlayStation 5 look like?' and he said 'you mean if'. [...] I said 'are you willing to say that on a stage?' and he said 'yeah, it's an if'."

"It was a really interesting thing," said Lanning, "and he didn't give me a clear answer, but he's hinting at [needing] to be more agile. None of us know what the future really looks like, so how do we adapt faster? As if there might not be a PS5, or a traditional next generation PlayStation console. I think it's pretty much a given there will be, and another Xbox, beyond Scorpio.

Note: We are at least a decade away, if not more, in the U.S. from having the kind of internet infrastructure & bandwidth that console makers & publishers could rely on to support either digital-only distribution and/or 'games as a service' via the cloud, efc.

Reading this quote for November “The PlayStation 4 was the top-selling hardware system in the month, driven by the PS4 Slim System 500GB Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Bundle,” said Naji. “This SKU accounted for 30 percent of all hardware units sold.” NPD.

Based on that if we are generous for the bundle we give it 40% world wide that should still leave some 5 mil ish UC4 sales. For the hardware that's like 2.4 mill or something sales. Normal sku, There most likely counting the Pro and of course COD bundle had to make up the rest.

Well deserved. Definitely my favourite game of the year. I don't know why people shit on the multiplayer, it's fantastic!
