You can get 1TB external hard drives for 70 some bucks on amazon...

I remember the days when I bought 1TB Samsung F3's for less than the price of a console game.

If you replaced the internal, is it possible to clone the data and migrate it to a new drive?

On a PC yes, not sure if the PS4 will offer that feature.

Nah, the floods broke the industry, the companies like Western Digital kept it from being fixed. They are keeping the prices high so they can rake it in.

Stop moaning. The internal drive is replacable. 1TB is not enough for a few games... even if they are 50GB a piece you can get 5 - 10 with the system software and what not on it. Then you will have to delete the game data. Not that big a deal, wont the ps4 let you play while installing?

I can see why they don't allow external drives, it would need extra testing and there is always the possibility of something going wrong and people blaming Sony and wasting their time. You will still be able to use externals for music and videos I would presume.

edwardecl

I won't stop moaning.:P Replacable with a max of 1TB for now. Yes, you can do that, but only downloads 1st sections of the game, so you need to keep downloading it as you play. If the download stops and not complete, you won't progess in the game until that section is downloaded.

And yes they can be used for multimedia stuff.

2.5in vs 3.5in. 3.5in is always cheaper.

Well they've come down quite a bit from the flood prices.  But yeah, probably never that low.  Although it seems glory days of the F3 is over anyways since they got sold to seagate

To be fair, Seagate aren't that bad now. Sure they had a crappy batch of 7200.11's I believe but their new stuff seems ok. Western Digitals stuff has fallen in quality in the last year or so.

[QUOTE="Desmonic"]

Really? 500GB aren't enough? I doubt that by the first 3-4 years the regular X1 & PS4 users will have filled them. And even then 1TB 2.5 HDD's are cheap now, meaning that in 3-4 years time the higher capacity versions (1.5TB, 2TB, etc) will have come down in price and it's also likely the SSD solutions (of similar capacity) will be available for the regular mortal at a decent price. (Crucial's 1TB SSD costs around 600$ now...)

Edit: Even being limited to 9.5mm I still doubt  the 500GB-1TB won't be enough, especially if one buys most of his games on retail.

Desmonic

500GB will suck. I plan on getting 2 launch titles on retail and then going for the digital route in 2014 and beyond.

I still have my reservations. Like I just said, you are basing this on the assumption any and every game will occupy 50GBs. I can see them easily being "just" 20GB-30GB (tops) for the first years, and maybe even most of the gen. Remember, unlike on the PC side of things, dev's know they can't push it "willy nilly" on the size of the game on the consoles. They know they are limited to a base of 500GB, that may or may not go higher than that.

I'm aware that not every game will do 50GBs, but we have seen that with more power comes more use of data and because of that games will still be bigger than previous gens. Games aren't held back thanks to Blu Ray so I can games getting bigger to take advantage of the space for high res textures and uncompressed sound. Even console games had texture packs like BF3 and Splinter Cell Blacklist on consoles.

I know you can choose whether to download the MP or SP first on PS4 but it would be even more awesome if you could just keep the MP on your HDD and then download SP whenever.

The hell? Why not? If they are promoting games with ps+ and next gen games will be bigger, then they should have added a bigger harddrive... Some might say just delete games i don't play, but come on...

There's a 2TB 2.5" drive from Western Digital, unless it's a hardware restriction by the PS4, which would make no sense at all.

It has to be 9.5mm, any higher and it won't fit in the PS4.

12mm, 15mm, etc. don't work, only 9.5mm.

You honestly think a TB hdd is going to be all thats avaliable?  LMAO?

Its better then MS who forces you to install every game on a HDD

Of course not. Burn games to external HDD and than go and play them any where or sell them off. You would need some kinda always online Digital Rights Managment system.

I hope to see 2TB in the future with 9.5mm size.

And that sucks about MS.

[QUOTE="charizard1605"]Well, Xbox One won't let you upgrade the internal hard drive, so it better let you install them to the external one. Wii U comes with minuscule memory, so again, it better let you install them to the external one. PS4 lets you upgrade the internal hard drive, so why would it let you install them to the external one? What's the point?

I agree. I don't really see this as an issue.

Since so many people seem to act like 1TB is confirmed, could someone please give me a link? I've looked and looked and looked, and I can't find anything saying this is confirmed. Plus since the PS3 only supported a 9.5mm drive also till you modded the HDD cradle or just installed it without the cradle, there are also many people out there who claim that they use SATA power and data cables so they can hook up 3.5" drives to the PS3, and claim it supports up to 1.5TB for an internal drive, and 2TB for an external drive.

So considering that the PS3 definitely supports a 1TB drive, and possibly up to 1.5TB, I find it vary hard to believe that Sony limited the HDD support for the PS4 to only 1TB. Plus it's common knowledge that just about everything that takes 2.5" drives are running out of space, and I would bet that Sony is fully aware of this, and with new 1.5TB 9.5mm drives already available, it wouldn't surprise me if 2TB 12.5mm will be around vary shortly.

I would bet that the PS4 will use a HDD cradle just like the PS3, so I'm pretty sure it won't be hard to use a 12.5mm drive. What I really want to know, is if there will be any way to get a 15mm drive in a PS4, because I think 2.5-3TB 15mm drives are just around the corner.

Really though all this is nothing more then speculation since Sony hasn't confirmed anything yet, at least as far as I've seen.

This is a very bad move seeing how Xbox One(and heck even Wii U) can do it. I guess we're stuck with 1TB internal hard drives, and I don't see that being enough when games get bigger in size. Not to mention for gamers who want to buy more games digitally like me.

So X1>PS4 in this area.

1TB should be enough for me though

Yeah, I hope that they do. Maybe they're scared that people will start passing around external drives full of games between one another somehow? I'm not sure why they would block the feature, really...

[QUOTE="clyde46"][QUOTE="lx_theo"]The PS4 can have the internal harddrive upgraded. Its really more matter of preference on which method you prefer, no?YoshiYogurt
You are limited to 1TB IIRC which is not enough for me.

WTF? How is that not enough. I have over 7500 songs and over 100 steam games and I've not even used up 500gigs.... How would you ever fill that on a console....

I filled my 500gb hdd in my PS3.

aw another one , and they say wiiu is last gen , haha ,

ps4 the list of things you can not do is just getting bigger and bigger

-can not play ps3 discs

-can not play music cds even though the prodecers can ,

- can not install games to the hard drive even the 360 does that,

- but sony can and will shove manditory installs for every disk  you try to play, which fills up that measly 500 gig hard drive,

-    oh now you cant play multiplayer for free - hmm

-   you can not and i repeat you can not listen to your own music while playing a game   ps3 has some games that can do that and my original xbox also has an list of games you can ,  and 360 you do it with just about any game ,

so -hmm tchbo

This is probably for security issues.
