1. Can be fixed with firmware update. 2. You can change the internal HDD of the PS4. 3. Even if all games start being 50GB in size, you'll still have room for 40 of them installed at the same time on a 1TB HDD. And if you are so hardcore that you play 40 games at the same time then I'm guessing you like having your collection physical too.trasherheadDon't you mean 20 games at 50gb? :P
Hmmm interesting. I wonder if you replace the internal HDD, are you going to be able to install games. I'm not sure what difference it would make if you used an external HDD and you're unable to install. Weird. Also its nice using external HDD so you don't void warranties or anything. Sony being sneaky again, doing a 180 the wrong way.gago-gago
Changing HDD on the PS3 won't void the warranty, PS4 will be the same...
[QUOTE="jsmoke03"][QUOTE="superclocked"]External hard drives are much cheaper than 9.5mm laptop drives, and they have much more storage room, too...superclockedi dont doubt it....but thats probably the trade off. its not like they cant patch that in later. Yeah, I hope that they do. Maybe they're scared that people will start passing around external drives full of games between one another somehow? I'm not sure why they would block the feature, really... lol good idea....hope they patch it then
You can get 1TB external hard drives for 70 some bucks on amazon...[QUOTE="mitu123"]
[QUOTE="osirisx3"]
internal drives are cheaper anyways.

If you replaced the internal, is it possible to clone the data and migrate it to a new drive?
I believe you'd have to redownload and reinstall everything. Ask anyone with a PS3 how much they'd look for ward to doing that with 500GB worth of content from PSN. Plus, replacing sucks. With external you're expanding. Buy a $70 1TB external drive and now you have 1.5TB of space. Buy a $60 internal drive and now you have 1TB of space and a nifty paperweight. I don't know why Sony is doing this. Xbone supports external, Wii U supports external, and even the fricking 360 supports it. Why they've decided to be less technically proficient than every other next gen console and a current gen one is baffling to me.Ouch, one of the reasons i favoured the 360 over the Ps3 was the ability to install games to the HDD, it save on wear and tear on the drive and reduces Heat and noise by quite a Margin and games load and stream faster when installed to a HDD, i would hava thought this would be a standard feature for all consoles this generation.delta3074The PS3 has an install feature?

First, it doesn't spoil warranty on PS3 (might be the same with PS4).
Secondly, contents can be backed up to external HDD on the PS3, but you can't access the content on your PC. Once you swapped in your new HDD, just restore, no redownload needed.
So, assume Sony did the same method, I would have no problem with that. ;)

500GB will suck. I plan on getting 2 launch titles on retail and then going for the digital route in 2014 and beyond.[QUOTE="Desmonic"]
Really? 500GB aren't enough? I doubt that by the first 3-4 years the regular X1 & PS4 users will have filled them. And even then 1TB 2.5 HDD's are cheap now, meaning that in 3-4 years time the higher capacity versions (1.5TB, 2TB, etc) will have come down in price and it's also likely the SSD solutions (of similar capacity) will be available for the regular mortal at a decent price. (Crucial's 1TB SSD costs around 600$ now...)
Edit: Even being limited to 9.5mm I still doubt  the 500GB-1TB won't be enough, especially if one buys most of his games on retail.

You know this problem will go away if you buy your major games on physical media and only download the "download only" titles right? Why create a problem for yourself if there doesn't have to be one? Just curious.Â
500GB will suck. I plan on getting 2 launch titles on retail and then going for the digital route in 2014 and beyond. I still have my reservations. Like I just said, you are basing this on the assumption any and every game will occupy 50GBs. I can see them easily being "just" 20GB-30GB (tops) for the first years, and maybe even most of the gen. Remember, unlike on the PC side of things, dev's know they can't push it "willy nilly" on the size of the game on the consoles. They know they are limited to a base of 500GB, that may or may not go higher than that.[QUOTE="mitu123"]

Developers are limited by hard drive size. I know Sony first party won't be. They will use the full BR capacity.
People filling a HDD up is a stupid thing to do. Lowers performance. If you have to have every single game installed and never deleted... It must suck to be you.
I'm fine with the main drive only allowing installs. It's better then MS's dumb ass stance of no main drive replacement.
My 360 has a 250GB HDD and still has 215GB free. Because I don't leave crap I'm not using installed.
My PS3 has a 60GB SSD and it still has 44GB free.
My PC has 256GB and has 127GB free.
Learn to file manage and space wont be a problem.

Tell that to someone who wants to go digitally with nearly all of his/her games, doubt buying every big game physically is going to solve that for a mostly digital gamer.External hard drives solve that by having 2 or more in use and having as many games as you can without filling up a hard drive entirely. So if you have a 2TB hard drive just fill it up with around 1.5TB and then get another 2TB hard drive and fill it around the same. Like 3TB should be enough for the whole generation. I can use 3 1-4TB hard drives on one Xbox One at once, and more with usb adapters.People filling a HDD up is a stupid thing to do. Lowers performance. Total non-issue. You can delete and reinstall games you've bought anytime you want as often as you want. You can also backup save files anytime you want. You can also install a 1TB HDD if you feel like 500GB is too small. I don't see how this is a bad thing at all unless of corse you are a lemming desperate for some kind of moral victory.Netherscourge1. Why should we be forced to reinstall all the games after deleting? Why not try not to delete most of them for once? That alone can be fixed with more space.
2.1TB isn't all it's crack up to be if you're digital focused, a 2TB may last through the gen.
3. It's a bad thing for gamers who want to go mostly digital on the PS4.
This is a very bad move seeing how Xbox One(and heck even Wii U) can do it. I guess we're stuck with 1TB internal hard drives, and I don't see that being enough when games get bigger in size. Not to mention for gamers who want to buy more games digitally like me.
So X1>PS4 in this area.
mitu123
But you cant upgrade the hard drive in the xbox one or the wiiu. You can upgrade it in the PS4 though, so it equals out. I would even say that upgrading the internal hard drive is a bigger advantage since you use it constantly while an external drive would just for storage.
And who exactly is going to store games on a external drive? Maybe 2% of console gamers at the very top?
Not to mention if you just need storage in order to transport a movie, save file or something like to a friends house you can buy a flash drive for dirt cheap and use that.
Wanting to stream movies or something? Use your network at home and stream it from a PC. Hell my PS3 see's my PC on my wireless network automatically.
External drives are also smaller in size generally and cost a lot more money. External drives are also slower because they rely on USB speeds only. So if you want to store something using an internal drive is a smarter option.
This thread reads like another xbox fanboy trying his best to take a dig at sony just for the sake of doing so, and poorly I might add.

Are you serious with this post?O_oWe don't know how many people will do it, but I bet it's definitely going to be more than previous gen.
You can buy 1TB external hard drives for 60 some bucks new...
Get a fast external hard drive and that solves that problem since they do exist, like the Fantom.
I'm not an Xbox fanboy.

If the drive is in a USB 3 caddy then you would have no trouble playing games from it.

USB drives are formatted in FAT32, you can't put a file on it that is bigger than 4GB plus we do not what file formats the consoles will be able to read.

A USB 3 external drive is fine for streaming game data. Hell I can record uncompressed 1920x1080 60FPS FRAPS footage to a 7200RPM drive and it works perfectly
