http://wccftech.com/rumor-playstation-45-release-date-price-pinned/

Rumour has it.

A recent rumor suggests that Sony’s Playstation 4.5 (PS4.5) will be releasing this Holiday season for

$ 400.00.

The rumor comes from a video uploaded by Roster Teeth’s multimedia channel – The Know. According to a newly published video, their sources confirm that the Playstation 4.5 will be releasing during this year’s Holiday season for $400.

Another interesting tidbit is that the source states that developers are already developing games for Sony’s upgraded PS4 system. The extra horsepower that comes with the PS4.5, is said to allow for a noticeable performance increase. Games developed specifically for the Playstation 4.5 will still work on the original PS4, but with a difference in performance.

As usual with these kinds of rumors, take the above mentioned info with a grain (or bag?) of salt. As reported earlier this week by website Eurogamer, Sony’s R&D labs allegedly already have prototype devices. According to Eurogamer, sources confirm that the PS4.5 is really happening.

Everything we’ve heard positions PlayStation 4K as a machine capable of playing current and next-generation ultra HD media, while also offering support for other aspects of the 4K spec, such as high-dynamic range and a wider colour gamut – aspects of the 4K spec that could be introduced to gaming. However, in terms of additional computational power, we’ve got be realistic about what Sony can deliver with a mid-generation refresh.

We can say that with some degree of certainty because PlayStation 4K will almost certainly use an evolved version of the APU technology used in the current console. Once again we will see semi-custom versions of AMD’s CPU and GPU technology integrated into a single, console-friendly processor, and thanks to the firm’s openness with its technology roadmaps, we have a good idea of the base building blocks Sony has access to in building its next PlayStation.

We also know about the fabrication technologies available. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One arrived when 28nm microprocessors were firmly established, and right now the industry is moving on to 14nm and 16nm chips using 3D ‘FinFET’ transistors. Shrinking transistors and innovative new architecture are what make generational leaps in computational power possible.

How do you feel about a Holiday 2016 release? Did you buy a ‘normal’ PS4 recently? Let us know.

If it's a rumor then put it in the title, no need for clickbait titles.

Regular PS4 will most likely drop to $299.99 this holiday then.

The NX has no chance if this happens.

They ain't doing 4k rendering with a $400 console. $600 GPUs can't reliably do 4k yet.

The rumors are nuts.

It will just be a tiny upgrade. Most likely a PS4 Slim with upgraded HDMI port to allow more 4K stuff. The hyperbole needs to stop.

Indeed. Even though these games will work on original PS4, at a decrease in performance, I'm not going to buy them and I'm not going to buy a PS4.5. Only way I'd even consider it, is if Sony let me trade in my system for $300 off the price. Even then I'm not sure I'd upgrade.

Seems like a big mistake to me.

These consoles are not strong enough to last 6+ yrs. PC tech is already like a gen better at this point and devs are hungry for more power. PS4 and XB1 have pretty much been maxed out already. You're not gonna see visuals improve that much on current hardware like we've seen with the PS3/360 because devs have had years of experience coding games using X86 architecture.

I can see it being $500, 4k TVs are now going for $460+. I'm betting the PS4.5 or w/e will 99.9% won't run games at 4k (they might run smoother but 4k is a stretch), as for shows and movies I can see it easily doing that.

The 4k rendering just referring to movies, no? I haven't followed any of this, so not sure.

Nobody is going to release a $500 console ever again. Both MS and Sony were ripped apart trying to sell consoles that expensive in the past.

If Sony does this they're going to kill all the momentum they have and doom their brand.

You and the devs are assuming customers will eat up the new hardware blindly. We don't know if that's true or not, because last time consumers were very hungry after a long generation. Now is different, it's only been a few years, and a lot of gamers who already bought these systems are going to be rubbed the wrong way.

As others have already said, it's the games that will make the difference. You also have to consider that console consumers are not like PC consumers. They don't want upgrades every two years.

Those expecting the exact amount of high sales for PS4.5 and XB1.5 are going to be in for a rude awakening.

No, it will boost momentum as the standard PS4 will come down in price.

As long as the price isn't outrageous people will buy a PS4.5 if the difference in performance/visuals is noticeable. Just think of it like a glorified Xbox 360 Elite. The 360 Elite most likely didn't sell as well as the base model, but there was enough demand to justify its existence.

That isn't a given. Just more assumptions. This move could really blow up in their faces. Early adopters will feel burned, so they are out. All you have left is the crowd that hasn't bought one already.

If it's true what it means ? They are basically releasing a new console before PS4 is even dead ? I knew this gen would be short because of weak consoles hardware, but not THAT SHORT. They didn't even release main exclusives that they promised, and they already change the console...fuuuuuck. Apparently PS4 will never see greatness LMAO. And I just bought PS4 last Christmas...Mental note, never fall for peasant hype again. PC is the only place of stability now. 350 bucks for a Bloodborne console ... never again.

Early adopters? Jesus, by the time the PS4.5 is released it would have already been three years since the original PS4 was on the market. Also, its not like the PS4.5 is replacing the original PS4 so nobody should feel burned. Yeah, I'd understand people feeling burned if the PS4.5 started getting exclusive software, but Sony isn't that stupid.

I mean like if og systems run a big game at 15fps instead of 30/60fps on .5 models. Stuff like that will be like urinating on loyal customers.

Don't confuse devs with gamers, if devs wanted more tech and power we wouldn't see so many games actually going back in terms of graphics like the 32 and 64 bit era, hell some games are still using last gen engines. I mean hell majority of indie games don't even use current engines besides a few that are trying out the Unreal 4 engine (which that engine is dope btw).

Outside of a few devs Crytek, Ubi (I know some people are vomiting atm but their new engine is amazing), Dice, Naughty Gods and maybe a few others, we aren't seeing a lot of devs going for those amazing graphics cause that **** still costs a lot of money and if said game bombs (Ryse anyone?) they just lost a metric ton of money.

Consoles are always gonna be behind in tech/power cause they are designed to be >AFFORDABLE<

Oh yeah that would be shitty. There's sure to be some shenanigans like that from at least a few developers.

The problem is these current consoles aren't as future proof as previous generations of consoles were, so they will peak much faster. New consoles will have to come out sooner than expected because of this.

Console gamers are not going to upgrade every two/three years. At that pace, they'll have to attain the focus of casual, high end smart phone crowds. Not core console gamers.

Console gaming is done, as we've known it, at least. They might as well switch to streaming subscription machines or apps like the Netflix design.

Not all, but a decent amount will, plus you're not even taking into consideration new buyers of the PS4 platform. There are still millions of possible future PS4 costumers out there. This is just another option for them to consider.

Like I've said all along, I don't really have a problem if Sony and MS do this. But they cannot in any way burn current owners... As long as the current models continue to have ALL future releases on them (up to a certain point), then I think it's a good thing.

My guess is this. The current PS4 will be supported all the way until the PS5.0 is released, then devs will slowly transition their development workflow and target the PS4.5 as the new base model. At the end of the day the OG PS4 will get a full console life cycle as it will get at least 6 yrs of support.

Heres my take on the Playstation 4.5. Is it possible Sony is releasing a new PS4 with 4K support? Absolutely. Could it have better specs than the current PS4? Possibly. Will it run games at 4K? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Unless Sony plans on putting in a beast GPU and CPU, and pricing the console at $900+, theres no chance it could come close to running games at 4K resolutions. Even at that, textures and such would have to run on lower than low settings, because of the massive amount of power it takes to just render a game in 4K. Lastly, from a business standpoint, Sony would be insane to release a new PS4 that is drastically different in the gaming perspective from what we have now. PS4's are still flying off the shelves, and with Sony releasing Playstation VR later this year, which has sold out numerous times on Amazon, could you imagine the amount of hate people would have for Sony? They just spent $400 on a new PS4, and $500 on a new VR system, and now Sony is making all of that obsolete by releasing a new 4K console? Good business just don't work that way. If this is what Sony is planning on doing, I truly do feel sorry for them the remainder of this console generation.

So with that being said, what is Sony likely to do? I think the PS4.5 will basically be a PS4 as we have now, but with the capability to view, stream, and capture video and screen shots at a 4K resolution, and would have some added horsepower that would only be usable for streaming, viewing, or capturing that 4K content. Possibly the added power could be used to make VR games run a bit smoother as well, although not likely. As far as traditional gaming goes, I cant see the PS4.5 drastically changing the gaming experience we already have on the PS4.

TL;DR I see the PS4.5 as being a media upgrade to the PS4, allowing 4K viewing and streaming capabilities, with the possibility of enhancing the PSVR experience. Basically, PS4 is as it is now, and PS4K, will be a PS4 with the ability to access, and create 4K media content.

I don't think they will. I'm willing to bet everything that this new business model will implode on itself, and I'll be smiling when it does. All this is going to do is further kill the console market and strengthen the gaming PC market.

Hell, even myself, a console gamer through and through, will switch to a superior platform with superior everything since I'd have to do that anyways just to keep up with shitty ass console offerings.

This is going to fail hard. The only way it succeeds is to push gamers away in favor of the super casual crowd, so even if it succeeds, it fails. Without traditional console gamers, and without PC gamers, that just leaves the casual, upwardly mobile smartphone gamers and weekend bros. This is just another nail in the coffin for the console market.

This gen is turning into shit pretty fast.

The problem is these current consoles aren't as future proof as previous generations of consoles were, so they will peak much faster. New consoles will have to come out sooner than expected because of this.

The avg consumers aren't gonna drop $400 every 3 or 4 years, it's not gonna happen cause not only is it gonna make people not want to commit to a gen (they might even skip a whole gen) it would also require devs to push out games on a yearly basis, I'm not talking the yearly CoD's I'm talking about the "you got a year to make this game at most" type of deal.

This gen already kicks the **** out of last gen not only in games, but in hardware. Remember the RROD and the bricking issue some PS3s had, we've yet to encounter any of that this gen except now the X1 is the console that has issues with multiplats like the PS3 of last gen. Will this gen be up there with gen 6?, most likely no cause that gen just went HAM on everything.

I'd upgrade, so that is one more person than you think who would be interested in this new iterative console model.

Gamestop would likely have some trade-in program for those interested in purchasing a PS4.5. Give me like $150 credit towards a new model and I'm down.

Average consumers drop that much every 1-2 yrs for upgraded tablets, so I'm pretty sure people could manage console upgrades every 3-4 yrs especially if said upgrades were just optional.

@bfmv2007: I agree, only way this thing works is if ONLY media features get upgraded. All the dev hype talk aside, I just can't see Sony splitting up the PS4 game market.

I'd be perfectly fine with a PS4.5 in that scenario, but if Sony burns me--a loyal Playstation fan since PSone, I'll swear them off forever. And I'm sure a lot of other PS4 owners feel exactly like I do about this issue.

They wouldn't be splitting up the game market with the PS4 - PS4.5. The same games would run on both. One would just simply run the same game better. Again, I fail to see how you are getting burned. I bought a PS4 in 2014 and I wouldn't feel burned at all. I'm excited for a possible improved model.

@emgesp:

1. PS4.5 exclusives could be a thing

2. Let's say they don't do that. That means resources will have to be spilt between 2 Playstation consoles. Either by both 1st and 3rd party devs or just one of them.

3. Let's not kid ourselves....the PS4.5 will be Sony's focus. And that's what scares me.

@emgesp: We'll just have to see, but if Fallout Next comes out and only performs well on PS4.5, and is a slide show on og PS4, or Horizon: Zero Dawn 2 comes out in 2017 and runs in 720p on og system etc... you get my point.

Basically I'm saying we can't have any performance cutbacks from how things are right now on PS4. None. If the new games want to display at 4k or run at an outstanding 120fps on the newer systems that's fine. But absolutely do not take a single frame away from already laughable current standards.

except tablets go for $49-$180 unless you want to get the HD 10 which is $220, even then there's no need to upgrade a tablet every 1 or 2 years unless you're one of those people who think it's awesome to always buy the newest and coolest thing even if it's barely an upgrade from your previous device.

I even own a 1st gen kindle fire which I bought back in 2013 and I have no desire to buy a newer version and if I did I'd only be spending $60 tops for a HD 7.
