Says who? In this day and age, online play sure is becoming a right. You paid for your internet service, you paid for the console, you paid for the game. Now you must pay for the service that uses your internet connection to connect to your console so that you can play your game online. Ridiculous.

MasteRich

Says the people who provide the service you are logging in to. Online gaming isn't a right. Just because it's free else where doesn't create a mandate that it should be free everywhere. You have the option to not pay and play elsewhere. That is your right. Don't get it twisted.

who charges to play online games?!? oh right microsoft

you should never have to pay to play a game you already paid for.

MasteRich

Online play isn't a right. When I had a PS3, my major problem was how gimped the friends interface felt (no game invites, cross game chat, sending messages was a hassle) and some games just had lousy support because there was no incentive to support the game after it's launch. Paying would help make it better.

You paid for your car, you paid for insurance, but now you need gas. Do you really think online play is as simple as plugging a cable in? There is a lot of behind the scenes work happening to keep the servers running and to keep them maintained. There are people who do that. People who need money. Sony is losing enough money on the PS3 hardware so I can't see why they wouldn't help themselves by charging for PSN (well, except for the fact that it's too late to do it now)

sony makes money on there hardware unlike microsoft, and thats not even taking into account MS having to fix RROD, I have a 360 and I would have prefered to pay more upfront for the console than having to pay for xbl, xbl should be free there's no question about it and it's MS who should conform, not sony, nintendo or pc gamers.

If Sony begun to charge for PSN that would be the final nail in the coffin that is PS3.

Gxgear

 the amount of times i've heard that being said.

I'm surprised there's still room on that coffin for another nail.

Well I guess since PS3 got some great games and improved on PSN they had to take out some of the nails:P

Does anyone else agree with me here? I mean, if Sony were smart, they'd start charging for PSN. It would give Sony a new source of revenue and I'm sure people wouldn't mind doing it once it's implemented (They can either pay or complain and chances are, most people will pay). I guess I see it like this: If Xbox Live has so many paying customers, why hasn't it dawned on Sony to start charging?

Wardemon50

hell no I wouldn't pay for online if that were to happen i'd be a PC online gamer

im sick of these greedy corporations i'm already paying for my internet service online should be free.

And?? it doesn't make it a right otherwise net neutraility wouldn't be on the cards and internet taxes wouldn't be on the cards of major governments such as the USA and EU.

How about Microsoft stops charging people to use their own connections to play their own games online? Neither company should make their console owners have to pay to unlock the online compeonent of a game, simple as that.

ski11buzz
If Sony charged us to use their servers, that'd be different. But the ability to play on so-called "client-based servers" is a right as far as I'm concerned and the ability of users to create and host their own dedicated servers is SACROSANCT. As soon as these rights are guaranteed we will have no need for Sony servers, which is why I'm confused as to why they're going through all the trouble in the first place. Hell, if they want to stop supporting their games with dedicated servers, fine. Hell, if they want to start charging for them, fine. But gaming on client-based servers costs nothing, and gaming on dedicated servers is as easy as letting people host them. As soon as I see that option barred and a pay-to-play option imposed on all online gaming types, they can go to hell. Same as Microsoft. There's a reason I despise Microsoft, and that's it. If Sony wants to jump in that boat, cool beans, but they can kiss my business goodbye. LET USERS HOST SERVERS. That's it. That's all I want.

You are definitely wearing some fanboy goggles if you believe PSN is on par with Xbox Live. I don't even own an Xbox or PS3 anymore, but I remember Xbox as being clearly better. I mean, that's like saying Runes of Magic is clearly better than WoW because it's free.

Why would they want to do that when XBL is clearly better? That would just result in people not buying a PS3 because there's no longer free online.

treedoor
How many people do you honestly believe who knows that PSN already is free or XBL needs subscribtion? None of my friends knows that XBL requires gold membership in order to play online. It's not like the boxes are shipped with big warning signs about payed online play.

No you's won't lol the faux postering is silly.

Do you stop driving your car everytime gas goes up??

Do you stop eating everytime food goes up in price??

We're all meant to believe some of you guys who sit and diss the Wii and Xbox 360 day in and day out are going to suddenly jack in Sony and buy Nintendo or Microsoft or give up console gaming all of a sudden??

So really; you's all bought your PS3 just cause it had free internet and not cause it had all these great games we're constantly told about??

Yeah righto.

Sony need's to make money and the legislation on internet access and funding is being tightened up around the world already as we speak so all i can say is welcome to the future of paying yet another tax, enjoy the ride.

sony don't need to go that route to make money they don't have to deceive anyone they get money through downloadable content like LBP and Home which I hear is making them quite a profit.

they don't need to do dirty business to get money.

Their's no such thing as a free lunch, A big company won't turn down free money especially Sony after the beating they've taken this gen. When it happens you will all happily pay it to keep Sony in the game and i don't blame you's.

I aint trying to decieve you or anything here, I honestlythink it's going to happen as it'll get to the stage where subsidising servers and bandwith and other factorswill become too costly for them in the long run especially if they can't keep up with future versions of XBL.The amount of consoles they'll need to sell to justify it will also be a factor.

They may be making money from PSNbut anythingnear like XBL makes forMicrosoft?? unlikely.

Proof that Sony is a little bit less retarded than the general public.

Suddenly charging money on a free service is pretty much suicide.

I disagree wth that, people on xbox live clearly don't mind paying for it, or else it wouldn't be so popular. And i still don't see how free online is a right in this world, they provide you with a service, you have no right to dictate wether they can charge for it or not.

HGAT

Why is that? No one charges for using you own internet connection except MS on the 360... even their Live on PC is now free because PC users ignored it completely. Online gaming is now on PC, every console, and every handheld... for free. The standard has been set, and now it's up to 360 users to demand that MS provide them the same. I said it on another thread today, if Live left all the Gold servcices as they are right now and moved online multiplayer to silver accounts there would be no issue. I'm assuming MS doesn't think all those nifty extras would keep gold subscibers if the online multiplayer was eliminated from consideration.

Live as a pay service isn't the wave of the future. It's the America Online of the online gaming world. And it will go down the same path as well.

Paying for online is a ripoff, there's no good reason to charge for something that should be free.

Lems will never understand this

Communistsheep

lems don't mind getting ripped off

Yeah, how dare a service provider like MS charge for a service that they give to us, blasphemy, while we are at it, they should give us games free to!

"mcfly, mcfly" we are already paying microsoft for that service it's called our monthly internet bill.

they are just chaging twice for what should be free.

and why do they do it, because people like you happily pay for it.

when they started talk about charging for online for PC the PC users would not take it and microsoft backed off.

[QUOTE="MasteRich"] Says who? In this day and age, online play sure is becoming a right. You paid for your internet service, you paid for the console, you paid for the game. Now you must pay for the service that uses your internet connection to connect to your console so that you can play your game online. Ridiculous.

heretrix

Says the people who provide the service you are logging in to. Online gaming isn't a right. Just because it's free else where doesn't create a mandate that it should be free everywhere. You have the option to not pay and play elsewhere. That is your right. Don't get it twisted.

loading a game and loggin online is same on both systems how u search for matches is based on the actual game setup

actual online gameplay xbox live = psn

added features and content xbox live > psn

demos and dlc xbox live > psn

if you wan to know which one has the better online community just read the back of a game "online experience not rated"

i have no problem playing 40+ man matches on psn just like i had no problem playg 32 man matches with cod 4 on xbox live

did have lag playing halo 3 32 man matches but thats not xbox live issue

xbox live can offer more content because of its fees and if people are more than willing to pay then there is nothing wrong with them charging

my choice was to stop paying but that does not mean xbox live is not worth its price (30$ if u know were to look)

so if u dont pay for xbox live dont complain

and if you are paying for xbox live remember that its not making ur actual online gameplay better (unless u have super fast internet connection and ur playing one of many games where u host the matches and take advantage of it)

but with xbox live you are getting great features tons of dlc and special events

so there is nothing wrong with paying to get extra

Proof that Sony is a little bit less retarded than the general public.

Suddenly charging money on a free service is pretty much suicide.

simslifer

I disagree wth that, people on xbox live clearly don't mind paying for it, or else it wouldn't be so popular. And i still don't see how free online is a right in this world, they provide you with a service, you have no right to dictate wether they can charge for it or not.

I have a right to dictate I do it with my pocket by not giving in to paying for something that should be free that's how I stand my ground.

No, that means you have the right to not accept their service, but it still doesn't give you the right to dictate wether they should pay for this service or not. Oh and, i don't feel ripped of by xbox live, does this mean i am a terrible brainwashed lemming because i find the fuetures worth it?

Let's take this point by point. First of all, how did you play Halo 3 and COD4 with 32 man matches on Xbox Live?

If PSN had more services and offered more features, then yes, Sony should start charging. But, I do believe that playing online should be free, only people that want premium service would have to pay.

Microsoft doesn't own the internet, various companies do. There isn't a ''should'' You don't have the right to dictate what service should be free or not. Yeah, because i find it worth the money, you maybe don't but what would you know, your a Cow fanboy he disagrees with everything MS. Of course they can't do that, it was free, they can't charge for it like that.

What sevice do you speak of? They don't provide me the internet connection, my internet service provider does that, and I pay them monthly for that service. They don't provide the game, I bought that. They don't provide the hardware to play the game, I bought that. They don't provide the servers to run the game in most cases because they use my system to play host! And in the few instances where dedicated servers have been used, they've been used more often on PSN... for free.

So what service are they providing you? Social networking apps? Sure. And if they want to charge for any extra content on Live I agree that's their call. But paying to unlock the online portion of your game isn't a service. It's extortion. Put online multiplayer on silver, keep the rest of it on gold and let the consumer decide how good a value those Gold Services are. Every other gaming device has shown online multplayer functionality won't break the bank.

WoW says hi. The average user pays $150 on that yearly. So long as they make money, they won't stop.

Its been free for almost 3 years now and you expect gamers to start paying for it? Yeah...

And let's not forget that paying for XBLG gets you absolutely nothing. The online is peer-to-peer, there is no dedicated servers, you get access to all the features except online play with a Silver account and even with Gold there are still ads plastered everywhere. Online, as it has always been on other platforms, should be free. There is no legitimate reason to keep charging for XBLG when it is clearly not needed to run the service.

WoW is a game... and it requires huge dedicated servers to run the massive environments. And servers cost a lot of money to run and keep running. There are no dedicated servers for XBL multiplayer, its all handled peer-to-peer, like the good old days of modem-to-modem connections in Doom. And really, if the community stops paying, then they'll stop charging. Like what happened on PC.

Wardemon50

Why in the hell would I want to pay for online?

I'm sure the 360 crowd would like to level the playing field by having Sony charge for the service--which is, quite frankly, superior to XBL. But it's already established itself as the console with free online. i.e. People who bought it expected it to be free in the first place. No givsies backsies.

They provide you with the abbilty to play on xbox live, and various other fuetures not seen on other consoles. you might not agree with them, but you can't just say they don't exist simply because you don't find any interest in it, unlike me. Extortion good one, you still don't have a right to dictate how a service should be provided.

I think that would be another one of Sony's stupid business decisions on this gen. A great free online is one of the PS3's huge advantages against the 360.

To the consumer, it looks good, but I'm pretty sure Sony is kicking themselves for not charging from the get-go.

I agree we consomers should go to MSHQ and point the guns at everyone taking care of xbox live and force them to make it free. You know why it didn't work for the PC? Because they would them pay for something they had for free for years. But xbox live is different, it costed money from the start to begin with. And people accepted it. I accept the xbox live because i find it worth it, do you really think everyone will now start rioting against MS.
