What?! PSP is having like an awesome year! Just check out the list of massive exclusives...

metalgear-solid

Can you provide that list, by any chance? I think it's a stretch to say the PSP is having an 'awesome year'.

MGS Peace Walker, SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3, Resident Evil Portable, Persona 3 Portable, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, Parasite Eve: The 3rd Birthday, Valkyria Chronicles, Lunar: Silver Star Harmony etc.
And that is to name only some of them! If that isn't impressive, then I don't know what is.

I love Peace Walker. No beef from me with that one.

Socom 3's metascore is 7.

Resident Evil isn't even out yet.

Persona 3 looks decent enough, by all means.

Kingdom hearts aint out yet.

3rd birthday aint out yet.

Valkyria chronicles aint out yet.

I have not played Lunar but its reviews have been very positive.

If however we return to your original statement:

'PSP is having an awesome year! Check out the list of massive exclusives!'

You've followed this up with Peace Walker and SOCOM, which was hardly stellar by any means, plus Persona and Lunar. Everything else you listed isn't even out; we can HOPE that they're good, of course, but we don't know. Only one game you mentioned managed a AAA metascore.

So when you're nearing the end of the year and you successfully list four games, one of which isn't particularly note-worthy, i think it is indeed a stretch to claim that the PSP has had an awesome year packed with massive exclusives.

I would have bought a PSP if it was for battery life concerns. It has more than enough good games to keep someone busy.

I bought one for peace walker, one of the worst gaming decisions I've ever made. I wouldn't be suprised if the new GOW PSP game is the last game I buy for it.

It's usually never a good decision when you buy a console for only one game...

Still quite a few releases to come. I bet you now, PSP will get another AAA while DS has none this year. DS may have more titles overall, but the PSP has better exclusives.

[QUOTE="Yangire"]

[QUOTE="HarlockJC"] I was going by Gamespot list. HarlockJC

And how does that have any authority?

I found my mistake sometimes when modding I get on the UK side of gamespot. It's the UK that only has 1 game listed to come out for the PSP in November. There is 9 listed to come out in the US In November. There is however only 1 game scheduled to come out in the month of December on the US side, I double checked that with Amazon which list no games coming out for the PSP in December.

Looking at the releases yeah I think God Eater Burst is coming out early next year so that why Amazon doesn't show it in december. And oh I forgot about Patapon 3. I might slip that one in my buy list for this fall.

I don't care what a game scores, the differences between an 8.5 and a 9.0 ain't much too me. The DS has a lot more high quality games than the PSP, and that won't be changing anytime soon.

All comes down to preference really, I can't stand touch controls, they feel gimmicky and half the time aren't even used (what's the point of a DS if you use touch to control a map). And I like actually 3D games that don't look like 1998 PC games, I know it's a moot point but that's what turned a lot of people to the PSP that and it's multi media functionality. Not to mention the great first party support, it's a shame there isn't a lto of third party support here in the West though.

I kinda feel like there is never really much more than 5 years of life in any console and when you get passed that point it just gets stale and needs to be replaced, IMO 360 is going in the same direction as PSP even if it isn't replaced as soon.

I bought my psp recently for peacewalker (Big Boss Pack)

I was not disappointed. It sucks that its coming to a close but like most people I prefer my DS despite peacewalker being one of my GOTY's.

That's cool, but this thread is about THE FUTURE OF THE PSP. As in the FUTURE LIBRARY of the PSP isn't looking up to par. IGN is even disappointed by the future of the PSP, is it doomed? Or is Sony preparing for a new PSP?

There are dozens of PSP games I want to play that I haven't yet. It's a six year old handheld and it still has games coming out that I want to play. I'd like for a PSP2 to be announced soon, but I'm happy with my PSP either way.

They'd be a fool not to invest into a PSP2, it may not sell like the DS in Na, but in Japan with a monster hunter exclusive to it it would sell too fast.

I don't need your sympathy besides my DS has been probably collecting more dust then my PSP. Besides there is about 7 titles or more for the PSP I want that is either coming out or is already. And there is only 1 DS game I really want. And personally I think 3D, motion controls, touch screens are really gimmicky and doesn't do anything for gaming for me. Don't think I'm a Sony fangirl or anything there are a few games I like for the Wii and DS and the 3DS's line-up has some games I'm really looking forward to like the Ocarina Of Time remake and Resident Evil Relevations and the Shin Megami Tensei games and Persona coming to 3DS. So I'm pretty happy with my PSP right now.

yeah even monster hunter cant keep up with the combination of braintraining, dragon quest, pokemon, mario kart, animal crossing, mario bros etc and you know it. also monster hunter could appear on 3DS this time around. capcom already announced street fighter iv and resident evil on the system if you think that the psp 2 will have any chance about the 3DS then you are wrong.

if it was only dq9

we had infinite space, pokemon heart gold, soul silver we will be getting black and white soon (well in japan. and im getting that version as always)

we will get final fantasy 4 warriors of light, lufia, dq vi, dqm2, ivy the kiwi granted none of that games will hit AAA status from gamespot. but they traditionally have an anti nintendo bias and are not trustworthy anyways (gerstmangate and all)

peace walker was sketchy imo. the controls hurt the game a lot. the second highest game on PSPs list is a port of an old PS2 game. sorry but that doesnt scream greatness to me.

the only good thing about the psp is that its damn cheap that goes to hardware and software mainly because people bought it because of the shiny exterior and are now selling because its meh overall. software mainly because of piracy.

its not awesome the controls are hideously bad which is true for about 90% of the PSP games

I really don't get the hate for controls on the PSP sometimes. Some controls setup might take some time getting used to but they are not at the point of gamebreaking. Just about all of the games I played (and I have played quite a few PSP games, some are shooters) don't have bad controls.

i played god of war which has fixed cameras.. works great i played MGS which had no fixed camera. and it was a hassle same with gta lcs and vcs and resistance and monsterhunter.. oh gawd that game controls badly the rest is racing games and jrpgs that dont have any controller issue

The PSP is getting Valkyria Chronicles 2, Ys the Oath in Felghana, Ys I and II, The 3rd Birthday, and the 1st of 3 Legend of Heroes VI games within this year and early next year. Moreover, MGS: PW and Ys SEVEN were just released for the platform.

It may be struggling, but it's actually getting stronger. It's more successful than any of the consoles in Japan, including the Wii. It just needs to find it's place in the west and somehow get people to actually buy their games.

I don't have problems with MGS and Resistance (probably because I already gotten used to the control setup with Syphon Filter). Never played GTA and as for Monster Hunter eh I couldn't get into it anyway. The only PSP game which I can think of that the controls really bug me is Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron. The ground battles aren't that bad, but man the space battles are a nightmare.

you can get used to a lot of things i got used to the touchscreen fps games on the ds. but most of the people think its clunky. a lot of people got used to dual analog fps games. i still feel its clunky although i play a lot of those games. but at least we can agree that its not optimized right ?

Localization efforts in the west are still more for the PSP and more licensing fees for Sony, given that they sell. Moreover, Valkyria Chronicles 2 and Ys SEVEN are fairly new and The 3rd Birthday is coming out in Japan in december. FFXIII Agito wasn't listed because I don't know when it's coming out, but it's undergoing VA work right now.

And, no, there are other games coming out for the PSP in Japan. Marvelous is shifting over it's effort to PSP because it considers it the "most profitable platform." Falcom is making a new Legend of Heroes VII trilogy exclusively for PSP.

getting stronger = getting more sales or support so no. those games will help the psp not to fall to abysmal levels of sales (which they arguably already reached) but they wont secure more support. also 3ds will snatch up a lot of unannounced psp projects

I forgot Knights in the Nightmare in october, as well as the new Tactics Ogre upgrade (akin to the FFT upgrade) coming out this fall in Japan.

[QUOTE="farnham"][QUOTE="hakanakumono"]

YuriSH

no its not getting stronger. all the games you mentioned (surprisingly you forgot to mention ffxiii agito) were announced YEARS ago and have been already released in japan. In japan you have yakuza psp and monster hunter 3P and thats about it.

Maybe he means while PSP isn't getting tons of releases, the releases we do get are very good games.

Well, I more or less mean that the PSP finally seems to be getting regular releases of quality games, which it wasn't able to do in the past. But you're right as well.

you can get used to a lot of things i got used to the touchscreen fps games on the ds. but most of the people think its clunky. a lot of people got used to dual analog fps games. i still feel its clunky although i play a lot of those games. but at least we can agree that its not optimized right ?farnham

I think they were fine for the most part. On a system that only has one analog stick, the control setup are decent IMO.

And so what that they were announced years ago? They do help make the PSP go a little longer.

Games are continuing to be announced for PSP. It is getting more and more support in Japan. And sales are strong in Japan.

Falcom is making a new Legend of Heroes VII triology exclusively for PSP.

Please tell me you are joking :(. We haven't even gotten the Legend of Heroes VI trilogy, yet. I hope it sells well here so xseed decides to publish LoH VII

Localization efforts in the west are still more for the PSP and more licensing fees for Sony, given that they sell. Moreover, Valkyria Chronicles 2 and Ys SEVEN are fairly new and The 3rd Birthday is coming out in Japan in decemeber. FFXIII Agito wasn't listed because I don't know when it's coming out, but it's undergoing VA work right now.

And, no, there are other games coming out for the PSP in Japan. Marvelous is shifting over it's effort to PSP because it considers it the "most profitable platform." Falcom is making a new Legend of Heroes VII triology exclusively for PSP.

marvelous and falcom are incredibly niche and both of those companies will abandon the platform as soon as the 3ds gets released. marvelous for example already announced 3DS support (i mean srsly. the most profitable series for marvelous is harvest moon and that will stay on the DS&wii). sure there are games comming out. but is there a game that will sell 5 million plus in japan alone ? probably not. monster hunter 3 has a good chance at doing over 3 million but thats the only release. the last hurah so to speak. ds has pokemon black and white which will sell 5 million easily and with another special edition it will reach 7 to 8 millions. also a new layton (not the one hitting america soon) is comming out that will sell 2 million easily.

and yes its the ds thats getting replaced not the psp

Well they got the first trilogy in 2006 or so. We'll be getting LoH late if we do get it, but I'm guessing we will if the Falcom partnership with XSEED stays profitable.

You can keep your sympathy, TC. I've been enjoying my PSP more than most out the consoles I own.

Stevo_the_gamer

Do you know what this topic is even about? This is about the future of the PSP. How the future doesn't look bright for the PSP.

I guess I can agree with you on that part. It has been getting some good titles recently but the both third and first party support is still really lacking.

Aside from Agito XIII, Yakuza and maybe 3rd Birthday, there's pretty much nothing I'm looking forward to on the PSP after September. 2010 has been one of the better years for the PSP, but yeah the future does look poor. A lot of developers are going to hop aboard the 3DS bandwagon and abandon the PSP (if they haven't already).

Harvest Moon is already on PSP. Again, you're making a lot of assumptions about PSP losing all it's support to 3DS ... based on what?

Falcom is working on a 3 part series for the PSP. They're not going to quit developing for the PSP anytime soon.

yeah but its not selling on the psp. they tried with innocent life but it did not get a sequel did it. harvest moon is a constant 500k + seller on the ds and the wii. rune factory series included. and im not making assumptions. metal gear is commint go the 3DS. that was a psp franchise last gen. resident evil 3ds was announced while resident evil portable has gone mia. super street fighter 4 dev. ono said that they cancelled the ds, wii, psp versions in favor of the 3ds version. square enix announced kingdom hearts, final fantasy and the next dragon quest all for the 3ds.

and falcom

man i love those guys but they are incredibly incredibly niche

yeah thats the fundamental flaw of the system it tries to emulate ps2 but has only one analog stick
