http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2016-11-29-vr-the-biggest-loser-this-holiday

Thanks to "notably fewer units sold than expected due to a relatively fragmented title line-up and modest marketing effort," VR headsets are now expected to sell even fewer than previously thought. SuperData's revised forecast for 2016 calls for under 750k PlayStation VR units sold (their previous estimate was 2.6 million) with Google's Daydream selling just 261k (down from 450k). Previous estimates for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Gear VR remain unchanged at 450k, 355k and 2.3 million, respectively.

What say you SW, are you going to skip out on PSVR like everyone else?

As expected VR is DOA and the flop release of the PS Pro seems to have dampened it even more.

I see the appeal of VR. I just don't care enough right now to drop the cash. Plus it's always best to see if this kind of tech will stick. No use buying one if there will be no new content a year from now.

TBH I think these devices have better applications outside of gaming.

It's not because of software or marketing. VR is a niche tech with very little broad appeal

Cant say were surprised. Its just as Nintendo stated, there is no appeal to gaming in a box by your lonesome. This is gonna suck too, cause now everyone will claim Sony is going third party...o wait, this aint Nintendo, fans will act like PS Move, PS Now, PS Vita, and PS VR never happened.

It's pretty clear VR software just plain sucks it's very under baked. If they want to make VR more mainstream they need to do introduce more features to the OS. Like Multitasking.

VR as a whole is Generation 1 meaning all the VR tech we have now is just a test phase 1 and it's going to take a very long time for VR to becoming mainstream and so with that, PSVR will be fine, it's still the cheapest VR headset out of Rift and Vive. PSVR was never DOA, the tech is still new and nobody shouldn't expect VR to be the next big thing, not yet at the very least.

In other words, PSVR will be fine on it's own for years to come.

I know! Isn't it crazy, they make claims, don't back them up, but then they ask the same of others. Pisses me off.

But most PS fans thought it was gonna sell gangbusters. Claims of no where to be found, back orders...when in reality, we see them piled up.

VR for gaming has and will always come and go. Yes the experience at first is pretty cool, but it's a novelty experience that wears off no matter the game. The tech in PSVR is limited and the PS4 Pro already proved that it couldn't help improve it enough to warrant the masses choose a cheaper console to the more expensive one. It doesn't matter because PSVR will give you the same inconsistent novelty.

I'm not surprised that this report shows how PSVR failed and is failing to reach previous sales estimates especially at the wallet milking prices that Sony is known for. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony slashes the price by half before the middle of 2017 to try to save it and then maybe even discontinue it by 2018. It feels good wearing and it's one of the nicer looking VR sets but that's about it. I'm unable to sell the taco bell one I won and will just give it to my bro and hope he'll have some sort of fun with it longer.

So, some research firm that is not Sony, nor endorsed by them, gives an overblown, utterly preposterous sales estimate for a new product, and when said estimate is not met you use it as evidence of floppage?

Trying too hard, dude. But, as with all lems, especially those pretending to be manticores, that's normal for you.

The PSVR selling +700,000 in the time it has been available would be hugely successful for such new tech that the public is unsure about. Another factor is that Sony limited the stock, and did not offer any big bundles. It is clear they are testing the waters. But who cares, right? I didn't buy one. I won't ever buy one unless I start seeing games that don't feel like glorified demos. Anyway.

The real story here is that the PSVR has probably outsold the Xbone in the same timeframe. Of course MS is terrified of providing numbers, so we can't prove it. But you know. You know.

Yeah, you know.

@gago-gago: Slashing the prices wont save it. Itll just allow stores to get rid of it and replace it with something that does sell.

I've been away for awhile. I guess I'll get adjusted again.

750k seems pretty high to me even though none of this report, either expected or actual sales, are official Sony numbers.

Kind of hard to call something a big time flop when important information is absent as in Sony's expectation and they're actual results.

Odd that you never called out the "research firm" that took surveys on the PS4 sales for November and Cyber Monday, which were not Sony nor endorsed by Sony. So Superdata counts now when it's PRO for the PS, but doesn't count now when it is NEGATIVE to the PS. We gotcha. All good man.

Looks like you are running scared and trying WAY to hard.

I was looking to purchase it as a Christmas present for someone. When I saw the price, I said lolno.

It costs more than the actual effing PS4.

This will be why it will ultimately bomb.

I call you out on quoting a random research firm as proof of floppage, and you proceed to give me a bunch of links linking to articles talking about said research firm. Who's trying hard here, lemmy-lem-lem.

Now, with the other thing about Cyber Monday/Black Friday, that was not a prediction. That was actual sales. Big difference. Even so, I don't take that source as truly credible; I just like watching you squirm from time to time. Sorry about that. Anyway, NPD is the only thing you can really point to as being credible when it comes to sales. But all of this is besides the point, which is that PS4 is and will continue to crush the Xbone. That is why you've made this thread; it has nothing to do with the actual PSVR, which, as I've said, will be hugely successful if it sells +700,000 by the end of the year--no matter what any research firm says.

Squirm on that, lem. And have a nice day.

That's sad, and I think it's shameful how much people on here want products they personally don't want to die - it's a great gadget and what happens to the people who DO enjoy it or DO want one? It's only going to get better games and better revisions down the line if it doesn't fail

I was surprised when I looked into steam stats and saw barely anyone owns VR... meanwhile seeing the steam store get absolutely flooded by dreadful VR games, calling them techdemos would be a euphemism.

Don't get me wrong there are decent VR games, but 99% of them is crap. Maybe that explains the lack of VR sales: there is no killer app, no system seller.

I disagree that consumers are the ones that set this out to die.

Where are the developers creating killer apps for this ? All I see is games cobled together in a forthnight... I think those developers, those money hacks are the ones that set VR up to die.

When John Carmack says VR is the future... I believe in his idea. But for every John Carmack there are 100 developers riding on a trend, trying to make a quick buck and selling people an ET.

@R4gn4r0k: I understand your point, but AAA game development costs are a disaster at this time. There is simply no way that Bethesda is going to make a VR TES6 or some crazy thing like that if the hardware isn't selling. They will not invest their time in making games for a platform where their products won't sell. The reason we see 1-2hr shovelware right now is because it is cheap to make and tests the waters with consumers. Full fledged 10+ hr campaigns in immersive VR... this is what consumers are clamoring for when they laugh at the "tech demos", but they aren't going to get it if the devs don't have any confidence in such a development cost/time investment. It could destroy a smaller company to take such a chance, and a big AAA developer isn't likely to risk it either if they have a safe cash cow in the same old traditional markets

@xantufrog: That's a good point. It's kind of a vicious circle:

It needs to sell enough in order for companies to make a proper game for it... And it needs a proper game for it in order to break through.

But I was kind of hinting to ET because I think people will get burned out on all the very bad games, and will start to see VR as a gimmick, returning to old school consoles and yer flat screen TVs for proper gaming.

Sony is playing the long game with VR. If PSVR is a flop turn all VR is a flop because PSVR is about to outsell Vive and Rift COMBINED. I'm not sold on VR yet so it won't bother me if it fails to become mainstream.

Can we get away with passing analysts expectations as hard fact in our thread titles now? Because, that would be great. You have not seen my final form yet.

Where have you been? This stuff ALWAYS passes off as facts in SWs. Why cry about it now?
