So many people like using Sennheiser's hd 800 series headphones (as an example, there are literally dozens of high end headphones in this price range) specifically because of the soundstage, some people even complain that its unnaturally large. The bass also extends down to 4 hz, far lower than the limits of human hearing, and lower in fact than what even an 18" sub can produce.

On top of that you also get detail retrieval that you literally just can't get from speakers (one of the advantages of having the drivers right next to your ears), important when you're trying to hear and identify the location of things like distant footsteps and gunfire.

Something you do get from a sub is that visceral feel of the bass flowing through your body, but a lot of home theater aficionados install something like a buttkicker to enhance that effect, and they work just as well with headphones.
