Do you guys remember the days of long ago. When snes was all the rage, back when sega genesis was making its debut. games like sonic 3 and yoshi story were all the top hits. We all played them, we all loved them. Mario 64 came out a few years later, followed by OoT and our lives were changed forever. That was the climactical age of videogames.

Time has passed and dreamcast, came and went, ps2 and xbox duked it out. there were alot of great games on those systems . Halo....ffx....just to name a few. Although games keep getting bigger and more fantastic looking, nothing stands as tall as playing super mario brothers 3 with your buddy afterschool. Nothing beats playing a link to the past... THE REAL A link to the past.

Does anyone agree with me? Games that are out today are fantastic. But does anyone still have the nostalgia of the days of yore? Can anyone else argue that back in the day...videogames were so much better.

Mabye its because im older now. i played a link to the past when i was 5. someone out there who is 5 can say that twilight princess is the game he will remember forever. In my twenties now that i play it, its a really good game, no doubt, but it is not that fantastic fantasy experience that let your imagination wander into the world of hyrule.

For us old school gamers

the future is bright for videogames

but dont forget your roots.

OoT nor SM64 changed my life at all.

I was too busy playing Warcraft 2 at that time to pay much attention :P.

It's part of growing up and such I'd imagine. At least we had a golden age of gaming. Not like the kids now.

Great platforming died with the 3D Ages.

Nothing will Touch Mario / Donkey Kong Country / Sonic / Yoshi now. EVER!

I started gaming with the Coleco Vision.... and I was hooked..... but it wasn't until years later, when I had seen Super Mario Bros for the NES that I was amazed by a game, I remember dreaming about that game the same day... I couldnt get it out of my head.

But Super Mario 3 was my absolute favorite from the NES days. Did you know there is4 different ways to go through the last castle to change the last fight in 6 very minute ways???

Most people knew about the Power Wings one with flying up onto the ledge upon entering the last room, but I found 3 more ways to change it even further. I have a feeling that maybe a few other people in existence may have found these too, if you are one of them, let me know, and tell me what they are (as proof)

times change, what is repetetive to you will feel brand new to younger gamers. It works the opposite way too, what you feel is nostalgic, they may findarchaic.

time goes on...

I would think, given the success of the XBLA and Wii VC, that there are many gamers who are willing to give older games a whirl still.

I grew up gaming, and I like some of the classics, but I will say, that going back now, most games from the past are better left to the nice haze of nostalgia, as they have not aged well to me.

IM A OLD SCHOOL GAMER

i rember when i first seen super mario in action . i said my u gotta get me a nes it looks just like a cartoon.i only had a 5200 be4 thatso the nes blew me away.then i seen the sega master system and played the demo at a local store of alex the kid, of course i had to have that too.those were great times.

and all i can say is nothing can beat good times when young. i guess thats why these newer systems dont feel the same for us oldtimers. we got families of our own. bills and other worries to deal with be4 we get a chance to play our games.

i agree with ya spruce. bar a few exceptions (BG 1 and 2, freespace, deus ex and a few ninty classics...oh and FFVII to name a few imho). most games dont age well. i recently played elite on my PC and...to be honest, i lost interest pretty quickly. it was a revolution in its day and i have very fond memories of playing it on the BBC but, imho, there are many more enjoyable games out there now (like eve online). id love to see a new version of elite though....would be sweet :D.

good times though. loading from tapes FTW!! :P.

I remember playing Pole Position in the bowling alley and Mappy in the roller rink (and my first home system played only Pong, Table Tennis, and Handball -- I think it might've been the Odyssey 2, don't remember), and yep, I have a lot of the arcade compilations for my PS. But I discovered something recently: the old games aren't as fun as we remember them. Oh sure, Elevator Action might be fun for a spin now and then, but it's repetitive and repetitive, even for old-timers, gets boring. We didn't mind it much back in the day because there was nothing else to compare it to, but nowadays? Even the games that were linear, like Super Mario, hurt in comparison with today's games. God of War is an infinitely more satisfying game to play -- sure the "princess" is dead, but you still get a chance to save her anyway. Throw in the fact that we now have "peripheral" games (Guitar Hero, for example) that are a revolution in gaming (although I'm still waiting for a Crossbow game/controller), and I think when all is said and done, 2004-6 will be considered the high point of gaming. Heh. I'm already nostalgic for last year.

Not much replay value as before (seriously, I have played all the marios so many times), but multiplayer has come a long way also.

Its a part of being young and video games were fresh no matter how archaic they are in comparison games now. The first time I played A Link to the Past, it was amazing. When I beat Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers on the NES it was a huge accomplishment, Battletoads as well.

We are older and jaded. It really sucks.

I remember when finishing a game was a honor reserved for gamers with skills and we would all trying to see the ending. Now games are so easy any novice with a couple hours can do it. Old school for me is the nes and atari 2600 that was hardcore gaming sure the graphics have gotten better but where is the challenge for the new games??

Now games are scored lower if they are too hard lol for 40 to 60 bucks I want a game that will push me to my limits.I want to throw my controller and dream about beating boss x. I love games like ninja gaiden that have that old school flavor. Sadly it seems like online has replaced single player and I have to search for gamers to get my challenge.

Rolf, Nostalgia sucks, I didn't manage to live into the 21st century to dream about how great the good ol' days were. Eff off battery operated Pong console with lightgun for skeet. Eff off Atari 2600 I must have flipped the score on Space Invaders 500 times and solved Adventure twice that amount. Eff off Intellivision with your wierd @$$ controller with control disc and plastic overlays. Eff off dropping $10 dollars worth of quarters in an arcade for 15 minutes worth of entertainment.

Sure todays games may be easier but who cares? I got the money now to buywhatever I wantand modern games always have difficulty levels.

Retro games suck and I don't understand nostaligia at all.I can't live in the past I want the future.

QFT, old style games used to be damned nigh impossible to complete. Most games now you can blunder through in 10 hrs.

I enjoy gaming now as much as I did with the 2600 and on (SNES was my favorite though). I think the difference in "then & now" as far as RPG's and such go, is the TIME we have to enjoy them. I loved Oblivion, but I am 33 with 3 kids, a mortgage, and a FT job... so I dont' have 150 hours to plug into it like I did games in the past. Gaming is better now than ever... you just have to make the time to lose yourself for a while.

Great thanks for the blank post(again)glitchspot!!!

lol I didn't mean to sound like that man, sorry if it came across as such. Seriously though alot of those games are easily found on the internet for free as their licenses have expired or the companies have gone bust. Rather than paying for some crappy game on XBL try some of them out, especially the 1st 3 UFO games which, although graphically dated, still have gameplay as good as nearly any game out there today. I've never played any squad based game as good!

I don't play these games alot but every now again its fun to blast through them.

Those were great times. I'm old enough to remember well before that but those were good times. I think part of why they are soo great is because we were young so easier to please. I used to love some games that when i look back weren't that amazing. But i did play a lot of good ones and a few from the snes i played over and over were chrono trigger, final fantasy 3, and secret of mana. (big rpg fan)

Man, this thread made me plug in my "Phillips G7000" again.

1.8 MHz and 64 Byte RAM ... yay ;)

Glad it still fits to my TV.

Games were crap in the early years, your right about that. With Nintendo groing strong though, they became a blast. Youcant underestimate the immense Impact that Nintendo had onvideogames back then.

games back then were just different, I was playing a lot of adventure games back then, and some had a lasting impact on me that most new games just don't have.

games were more likeplaying a book, kyrandia, quest for glory, baldur's gate... those are games ill remember forever. and now games are more like playing a movie... not that its bad its just different.

ico and sotc were two games that had a nice impact on me, excellent games ;)

I sometimes play old games for nostalgia, especially the original Sonic games on the Mega Drive. The Golden Age ruled

In my youth, I spent hours on LucasArts adventure games, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Sam and Max, along with Space Quest and King's Quest from Sierra. Those are the games that really affected me from early on. I had an Atari 2600, all the Nintendo systems, a Genesis here and there, but even still... PC Adventure games owned them all. (Thank God Tim Schafer is still making games.)

Well im gonna be 36 this year..Im oldschool..I still have my original Atari 2600 and every system up to now. I have around 1400 games too....I have been an ARCADE rat back in the days and still to this day play everyone of my consoles.

I remember the first game I ever beat was Asteroids for the Atari 2600. You had to flip the score...crazy fun. Then the next game I remember beating was Super Mario for NES at 5:30 in the morning...lol..I will never forget all my old games.

Im lucky to be married to a great woman that supports my gaming passions and buys me things all the time. Plus I have passed on my gaming adiction to my 2 boys.

It has been a fantastic way to spend spare time between work, kids, wife, workingout, and such.......Thanks goes out to all the game developers and Arcade manchines.....Peace.

Back in the day..they werent any solutions or FAqs through the internet ..you had to solve it yourself!!Good days!!

i played a link to the past when i was 5. someone out there who is 5 can say that twilight princess is the game he will remember forever. In my twenties now that i play it, its a really good game, no doubt, but it is not that fantastic fantasy experience that let your imagination wander into the world of hyrule. For us old school gamerswe are veteransthe future is bright for videogamesbut dont forget your roots.CrazyIvanIV
I played ALTTP when it came out, I was like 14. So yeah, all these games from your early childhood are the ones I played in High School. The 'early' games for me were River Raid, Kongo Bongo, Yars Revenge, Adventure, Combat, Missile Command and Demons to Diamonds.
