We are also just now starting to see Heavy Rain rising as one of the most sold used games as well.

shawn7324

Any proof to back up that claim?

Either way you could say that about any game.

I don't need proof to back up a claim purely decided by common sense. Nothing against Heavy Rain, any popular single player only game follows the same exact trend. Everyone whom bought the game day 1 has already or will soon complete the game, most will sell it. The only reason I mention it is to try & pull back some of those whom are thinking Heavy Rain is the absolute greatest game ever back to reality.

I'm afraid a claim like that requires numbers to prove it ( just using common sense). This is a statement by someone working for sony, ofcourse hes going to big up the game - i think we should wait for the numbers to come in. Being top of the UK charts and Amazon means that the game has clearly sold well, but just how well is the question.

So Heavy Rain is a success both critically and financially. Well then, haters have pretty much been owned. Seriously though, the game is fantastic and really does deserve to do well, congrats to Quantic Dream on taking a risk and pulling it off so beautifully.

First week
UK - 1st
JPN - 6th

I'm surprised by this game's success. Was expecting a less enthusiastic critical response, similar to that of Fahrenheit. And I really was not expecting it to chart this high. It's doing well all over the damn globe.

Oh don't even pretend like you knew this new, risky, "interactive drama" IP was going to be a commercial success.

Great, I usually don't really care about software sales (specially for FPS, sports and some other popular genres) But I am looking for this one, I thought it wouldn't do as good as it seems it is doing right now Props to Quantic Dreams, they deserve this and more

I honestly highly disagree with the critics who say the game is really good. One can check my review for further reasoning, but it boils down to the fact that Heavy Rain ultimately fails at what it set out to do. The inresponsive (not unresponsive for a reason) control system, the total lack of exposition for major plot points in the game, the gratuitous use of red herrings, the constant freezing and presentation issues, numerous bugs in the game, and a general lack of content plague the game. Admittedly, these are things I could forgive in your regular Halo game, but these are serious problems for a game so focused on creating an immersible experience.

You'd be surprised what is considered profitable. System wars seems to think only Halo-size sales can be profitable. A million sold for any game is really good for the dev and publisher. Sometimes even just 500k can be profitable depending on how much it took to make the game.

It just seems to me that cows are setting them self up for "Ownage" style threads. The only indication we'll have for sales are NPD's and Media crate. I'm not sure about Japan but Sony is not even advertising Heavy Rain in America (excluding the PSN marquee). I'd honestly be surprised if it reached 100K in each region.

We'll just have to agree to disagree then. I for one, really loved the game. I mean, it's probably one of my favourite games, ever. That was how much I enjoyed it. I was hooked right from the start and was pretty much fully immersed the entire time. Sure, the game has a few flaws and technical problems along the way and there are a few noticeable plot holes, but it wasn't anything that really took away from the fantastic experience that was Heavy Rain. I cared about the characters, I was fully engrossed by the frantic action segments, I was honestly torn and felt uncomfortable about many of the game's tougher decisions and I was completely took by surprise by the reveal. It's not perfect, but then again it doesn't have to be. All I know is that there is nothing the competition can do to top this as my GOTY, and that I would love to see more games like it.

I agree partially with your sentiments actually. I want more games like Heavy Rain. I just want them to be more refined, have more content, and have a more cohesive story. For someone like me who reads so much, having something like an unexplained red herring just makes me go lulwut? By the end of the game there were so many of these moments that it just became cumbersome and uncomfortable.
The most noticable of these is the entirely unexplained blackout where he keeps waking up with an origami in his hand and the constant reference to Carnaby Square where he appears (which is where the accident takes place). It is never explained how he relates to Scotty at all!
I can do that for a reason that's quite simple, Heavy Rain is something that's different. I know pretty much exactly what I'm getting when I buy something like GoWIII or FFXIII, but Heavy Rain wasn't like that. It was new, and it was unpredictable.

If you were smart enough to reason through Silent Hill's sordid plot, I honestly recommend against the game. The smarter you are, the less fun you're going to have with the game, especially once you notice the huge shortcomings.

I guess stuff like that matters more to some then to others. Some things weren't adequately explained, I agree, but I can also see why they may have left some things unexplained. It added an extra sense of doubt and mystery to the character in question, and made sure you were never quite sure of him up until the killer's identity is revealed.
Unless I'm mistaken, I'd assumed that Shelby had put the figure in Ethan's hand when he had taken Shaun. It would have been easy for him to interact with Ethan without him being aware of it, due to his blackouts. As to him always turning up at the site of Jason's accident, I'd assumed that that was just a side-effect of the trauma he had suffered due to that event. The scene at the shrink's office further pointed towards that kind of an explanation.
So, if you're calling Silent Hill's plot "sordid," and that means that Heavy Rain is "sordid" ... well then I'm sold!

I might wait a couple months though ...

It matters so much to me because the entire point of the game is the story. That is the central premise the game is built upon. It is about creating an experience. If that experience is shoddily written, it is ruined. Being immersed in nonsense is worse than not being immersed in lack of sense. There are also ways to add mystery that aren't complete nonsense. .
The problem with your interpretation, if you remember, is that he had the same blackout before Shaun was taken. It happened twice in the game. He had an origami episode before the origami killer ever even struck him. Also, he turned up not at Jason's accident site, but Scott Shelby's site.Carnaby is where the first drowning occured. *spoiler* Vandalvideo
In that case, while it may be a bit of a stretch to say so, it could potentially be seen as an attempt by Scott to warn Ethan as to what was to come and in some weird way try and show him why he was doing this, even if Ethan himself wouldn't have been able to make sense of these things. It's possible, if you entertain the idea that Shelby had been watching the Mars family from before he took Shaun. Should this have been explained properly within the game? Yes, it probably should have. Did it take anything away from the game for me? Not really. Again, to each their own

Which, honestly, would have been a lovely plot device. But they never used anything like that to begin with. It also, however, raises questions of when the heck he could have done that in the first place if you pay attention to the time stamps on the events themselves (rain indicator). Of course, that isn't the only problem in the plot. I could rattle off ten or twelve in quick succession without having put in a large amount of time analyzing the story (which I usually do for these types of games). You may not think these plot problems are that bad, but when your game's focus is on the story and the story runs roughshod on the player without any explanation, it leaves a bad taste in one's mouth. It is poor directing at the very least. My second biggest question is why the crap no one ever went to that origami shop even though it was talked about a few times. It seemed like a pretty important lead to me.
I wonder - are the people buying the game because it's different, or because they think it's 'good'? So far it's a good game, but I suppose the lack of competition in this genre let's them dominate it.

OK, your taking what I said way to serious as if it is something bad. I don't need to try & build up some numbers to prove something that happens all the time & has forever. Heavy Rain is an awesome game & a amazing experience, I enjoyed it enough to play through a 2nd time. Why do you find it so hard to believe that when games like this, Single Player only games that are less than 10 hours long, generally see a big hit in used game sales between 1 & 2 months after release?

I'm a fan, but I'm not excited that the game is selling well. I expected it would, but if it didn't it would not bother me. That is just how I am & I've since deleted that part of my message as I understand & agree why you all do.

I'm interested in the numbers. I was predicting a game like this to sell poorly.Shattered007
It's been marketed very well, and word of mouth is generally very good. A lot of people who wanted to hold off cracked and picked it up because of what people playing it were saying about the experience. Though, I do expect many of these quickly purchased new copies to be turned in, and for the game to drop off in sales like a rock by the first week when the deluge begins.

I haven't seen a single commerical for Heavy Rain on Tv ever.

Its gotten a rep as this hugely new and innovative game... like there was an article on Yahoo! and in various papers about it. Thats how stuff really sells, advertising helps but people consciously read articles and arent as wary of them as advertising.

But i dunno about TV, but ive seen heavy rain advertisements everywhere else

I wonder - are the people buying the game because it's different, or because they think it's 'good'? So far it's a good game, but I suppose the lack of competition in this genre let's them dominate it.Mr_Cumberdale

there have been plenty of games that were "different" and didn't sell well. i think this game is actually a good entertaining game (since the ps3 clocks are supposedly fixed im about to fire it up) but at the same time they could obviously make something better in the future. it would be alot like asking back in the mid 90's "is metal gear solid really a good game or is it just because theres no other stealth games we think its good" mgs2,3,4 proved that it can obviously be improved upon but that doesn't make the first one bad (its still my favorite personally)

Wait so pachter prediction was wrong for this game (he said it would not sell good). What is the world coming to. Next you will tell me the year will end with no wii hd. Noooooooooooooooooo!

karsa-orlong

out of all the analysts, pachter is actually the one that is most often right...

is that true or are you being sarcastic? i was going to ask if hes ever been right

no sarcasm. pachter is right about 60% of the time, which makes him one of the most accurate analyst

Tretton may not have simply been spouting PR about Heavy Rain's sales performance.

Heavy Rain has topped the UK charts.

Apparently it does so "despite widespread reports of shortages."

shinrabanshou

NICE!

I went to my local Walmart for something... then wanted to check out the Heavy Rain display. Guess what? None left. I looked around the electronics department and did find only 1 copy hidden at the bottom of the front display, but it was hard to see. Yes, it sold out within 1 week at my Walmart.

It was really good, but like, took me about 9 hours to complete, which is bit disappointing.
