Earlier today I saw this Tweet from Cliffy B.:

"http://aol.it/itAtNF It's official. RIP disc based Single Player games that are less than 20+ hours in length."

What he's referring to is the fact that RedBox is going nationwide with their $2 game rentals which would in turn be a huge blow to the industry's new game sales. I was wondering what everyone else thought of this. How much damage could this do? I know Cliffy is known for cracking jokes, but he actually makes a good point. With devs making less money they could just stop caring all together and the quality of future games will be compromised. The only way they'd be able to make a decent amount of money back would be to ditch the disc and go all digital. With people flocking around the redbox to grab the latest games for a couple bucks a night this will probably make thePirateBay look like a charity organization.

So what you guys think? Are rentals and used games become the new industry killers or what? You think they will be getting rid of discs soon? Or is Cliffy just being paranoid?

Cliffy is just being paranoid. The recession is RIP console games, the used gaming market is RIP console games, the everything is RIP console games...and yet, games keep selling in extremely high volume, and huge titles keep getting pushed out.

Lol. Of course not. Even if I do buy a disc on PC I just activate it on Steam and chunk it.

would be funny if Epic come back to PC because of pre-owned/rentals hurting their sales on consoles, than 5 years later they go back to consoles because of piracy, rinse and repeat

Next gen console will probably use better online services, a lot like steam! Perhaps it actually will be steam. I guess they can implement game rental services trough that as well. Probably the same for another generation and i'm pretty damn sure services like OnLive will start to get really big by then.

Right now Cliffy is paranoid.

I don't think so, as long as SP games are good enough and have enough content to keep gamers interested (inFamous 2 and Arkham City are two SP games I'll definitely be getting) then they'll still be bought and not just rented.

Easy solution: devs, some devs, stop being greedy and lazy. Stop making annual rehashes with less than ten hours of gameplay and charging $60 a pop for them.

Yeah, we'll just get more single player exclusives on the PC, because that'll be the only ones that sell. ;)

Well, I know that when games are good, I buy them to actually 'own' them. When a sequel to an awesome game comes out, I absolutely buy them without even trying them sometimes... usually doesn't bite me in the butt. Anyways, Digital will happen only and ONLY if download caps are not imposed everywhere. Currently Canadas download limits with the major carriers would only allow for a 1-2 game per month limit, and I don't see developers flocking to that just yet.

we've had download quotas in australia since the dawn of time - it isn't anything new, and steam is doing fine here.

Maybe this will help them do that now.

I'm always reading or hearing about someone who bought the latest CoD game and then trades it in for store credit a month or less later. Doing that is such a waste of money. Now they can rent it, beat the campaign in a few hours, pay a dollar a day for a week and get their fill of the MP, and then return it. If enough people do this, Activision and some other devs will have to re-think their strategies, and hopefully add some more value that would actually match that $60 price tag.

Heck maybe Redbox going national is actually a good thing in the end for gamers. :D

Definitely not. I follow a lot of game devs on Twitter and its become quite apparent that they like to pull things out of the air as much as fanboys do. Most of them are funny, though.

Blockbuster died in my area long before redbox. I think netflix and digital distribution in general killed blockbuster. There is so many different ways to get movies online why even bother with redbox or blockbuster.

Netflix! :o We have to face it: The digital age is upon us. I haven't bought or rented a movie in forever thanks to Netflix. I just watch whats on and wait for the rest to get added later. All my PC games are digital since StarCraft 2 came out. Tons of full games are on XBLA and PSN (don't laugh) is starting to do the same thing. If people start really taking to DD (and they are) we may actually see discs disappear as a part of the natural evolution of the industry. Of course, I'm sure a lot of are expecting that anyway, right?

Oh no, single player-only games will be really cheap to rent! This is really going to kill Skyrim's sales, right?

Oh wait, single player games with great replay value are guaranteed to sell. Sure, RedBox may put the squeeze on developers that produce games that are only worthy of being rented (hello there Kane & Lynch 2) but those that make games worth buying and keeping close to your heart won't be affected.

That's a very disturbing idea, especially for Xbox Live gamers who already have to pay to play online.

All media is going digital distribution anyway. PC is almost already there entirely (the vast majority of PC game sales are DD, hence why sales figures that only consider retail outlet sales are always so abysmally low) and the PSP IS there entirely. X360 and PS3 have been experimenting this entire generation with DD games via PSN and XBLM. I wouldn't be surprised if the next generation of consoles were DD-only, especially considering that would resolve the issues of both rentals and used-game sales for the industry. Cliffy B, like always, is over-reacting. At worst it just means the last couple of years for this console generation are going to be mostly multiplayer games and long single players games...which is what it is already so I don't really see how things would change anyway. And, of course, this does not affect PC games at all.

Well the whole idea of charging the exact same price for 4 hour shooters like Kane And Lynch 2, 20 hour shooters like Bioshock, 60 hour action adventures like Zelda, 100 hour RPGs like Final Fantasy, and INFINITE hour strategy games like Civ 4 is broken to begin with.

Actually its a fact. But I'll explain. cliffy b is worried about cheap little simple games taking over the industry because they are cheap and people want cheap in this recessionist world climate. Mmo's are casual games *by hermits own words* and are to be hated, Flash portal games are usually free, and facebook social gaming site stuff ususally costs pennies *as well confirmed fact hermits decried them at one time as to be hated* Now when PC gaming retail and Digital distribution was being outstriped badly by Just console gaming retail Hermits decided flash portal, mmo, and social website games were worthy to be added to their sales charts thus giving them the ability to outstripe consoel sales *by like 3% by the way*. So I brought up that since one person believes cheap simple games could never become dominate in the PC arena.. mmo's, flash portal games, social game sites...Therefor showing that yes..it actually can happen to PC gaming.

What does that matter when Digital + retail on Pc is STILL larger than any single console? And what does it matter when digital on PC continue to grow?

Microsoft makes a LOT more money from other parts of it's business aside from xbox 360. Does that render what the xbox 360 brings in meaningless?

The logic does not follow.

Sure, made-up invisible Hermits who haven't played Everquest, EVE Online and other MMOs that aren't WoW.

You do know places have been renting games for a long time. If a game is good people will always buy because they will want to play again. I also like the way you say new when those have been the killers for a long time.

Considering that companies like Red Box spend hundreds of dollars per copy for the privilege of renting it out, I don't think developers have to worry about losing money.

He kind of has a point, I have read many comments from gamers here saying that they'll rent (a brand new game) because it's SP or short length. I don't know how big an effect it will have but it is most likely worse than movie rentals because movies make most money from cinemas, all gaming has are retail sales. I hope nothing happens, some of us still like to buy and own our games.

Redbox still has to buy all those games. If anything it's going to hurt the used game market.

[QUOTE="Jack-o-Thompson"]Hmmm, I would try it out since my local blockbuster shut down.MrSelf-Destruct
Well, that's one thing the Redbox has already destroyed. I had two Blockbusters by my house and they are both gone but we got a Blockbuster kiosk that looks like the Redbox ones sitting out in front of K-mart (another relic that refuses to die). lol

Umm. No.

Ever heard of VIDEO ON DEMAND? NETFLIX? DIGITAL CABLE? $5 DVD's?

I think all of the later had infinitely more impact on Blackbuster than Redbox. Redbox is just taking the window opened by Blockbuster by capitalizing on the "lowest common denominator" of movie rentals, physical media, etc. Essentially because of each of the above factors, the business model of a full retail store for movie rentals was dead. All that could be sustained for rentails is a "kiosk" with minimal operating expenses. Redbox moved into that niche, and basically that's now a business that the remnants of blockbuster are going to try and move in to. Eventually even the kiosk is a dead concept as everything will be digital.
