I think Cliffy B is overestimating the collective intelligence of the human race, this gen we have seen plenty of games with crap short SP content sell well (just look at the first GoW) and its not like rentals are a new idea. This could be a good thing anyway, the two HD console feel very stale now and we would do with a shake up.

not a problem for PC

WilliamRLBaker

except that mmo's, flash portal games and social site facebook games make more money then the retail and digital distribution area of the pc market.

I don't see why would anyone have problem with that. As long as I get my hardcore pc titles (and I'm getting plenty of them on regular basis) why would I care if somebody else has different sort of fun. It's not harming my enjoyment in any way.

You are saying the Redbox will kill sales? As far as I know, renting has gotten less and less popular over the years, and 2 bucks a day is not exactly a good price. That means it is 4 bucks for 2 days which is on the more expensive side when compared to stores I used to rent from. I know I won't be using it, and honestly I do not see it affecting much.

Gamefly has been around for sometime now and I havent seen any devs complaining that this Rental Serviceis causing any harm

ImSwordMan

Seriously. Redbox game rentals are $2 a night. Basically the same price as in-store rentals in Blockbuster (about $10 for 5 nights). Either way, blockbuster online and Gamefly both already provide MUCH cheaper game rentals (one monthly fee, unlimited rentals by mail) than Redbox, so I don't really see where Redboxtaking their game rentals nationwide is going to do anything at all. Can't even find Redbox anywhere around where I live anymore (and I'm sure other places as well), as Blockbuster drove them out and replaced all the Redbox machines with Blockbuster ones.

Also, rental services pay more than retail for a rental licenced copy of a game. If Redbox expanded game rental to nationwide, they'd be buying a lot more rental copies of games in order to be able to fill their boxes. Sure they lose some retail sales, but let's be real. The people who are renting games for $2 a night probably wouldn't be buying all those games for $60 each anyway, and in some cases, someone who wouldn't have bought it, might try it for $2 and like it enough to go buy it.

I don't like renting, and certainly not from a kiosk. But I do see how this could effect game sales, which is a bummer. Still... maybe we'll see the return of longer games, which would be great.

Redbox has junk selection, and you'll end up paying $4-6 to actually play the game. Places like Hollywood Video and Blockbuster have game plans that let you rent a game, take it home and find out it sucks, and bring it back for another 1hr. later. Not to mention Gamefly and Blockbuster Online.

Anyway, from the PS2-era going back most games didn't have an online MP component, and rentals never killed them off.

I'm the consumer. It's good for me. Now quit your crying and adapt or be left behind. $2 game rentals? Nice way to test a game for a few days before buying. And you get it faster than stupid gamefly.

Maybe if they lowered the price of retail games people would buy them more, especially when publishers like to release all the good games around the same time. Even last week we saw Portal 2, MK9, and Socom 4, all come out on the same day. I'm sure there are people that were interested in all 3, but who is going to go and spend $180 all at once? Most people probably bought 1 or 2 and will wait for the others to either drop in price or pick them up used somewhere. If games were around $40, more poeple would buy games and notn rent

I don't think enough people have internet connections fast enough to download full games yet.

But if developers really want us to buy instead of trade or rent, they should make their games worth the price of admission. I'm not paying $60 for a 5-8 hour game. I will pay it for 20+ hour game, though.

Cry more. First piracy, then rentals.

Next he'll be crying that not all games charge a monthly fee to play online mmo style.

Also, like it's so much to ask devs to make more than a 5 hours campaign.

I don't buy this crap about new game sales loss due to the fact that Redbox is going to rent games at kiosks. Redbox has over 21000 locations nation wide. That means they are going to buy all those games NEW to fill up each kiosks with MULTIPLE copies to satisfy customer demand. That's a lot of games now being sold as opposed to none before. And there is no evidence that renting or buying used affects new game release sales drastically. As a matter of fact with Gamefly, Gamestop, Blockbuster and other similar service being offered more than ever before Call of Duty BO seems to prove just the opposite. If people want the game, they will buy it.

Bout time they have games for rent at a cheap price. This will only boost the games industry. I don't know how many times I seen 5+ people standing in line to grab movies. Plus the fact that like everyone takes them all.

It will let gamers have a trail of the game. If they like it... They will buy it. I know I would plunk down $2 for a day with a game... To see whether or not it's worth 30 times that amount.

Sucky thing is... There were about 5 redboxes and now there is only 1... Because everyone uses Block Buster now.

Cliffy doesn't understand that people pay for things they put value in. If you make a game that's only worth $20 bucks and charge $60, of course you're going to be in trouble when there are 99 cent games.

Easy solution: devs, some devs, stop being greedy and lazy. Stop making annual rehashes with less than ten hours of gameplay and charging $60 a pop for them.

i don't think they can afford to it for any less, not many game developers want to spend that kind of money on games any more, and costs are skyrocketing, before it was ok if things only sold half a million, you did'nt need dev teams of 100+ and millions of dollars to get a game out the door...

Yeah, Cliffy B's just trippin'....

I really don't know where some devs get the idea of thinking the rental industry is killing some sort of aspect of SP (or any) gaming. Clearly, most of these people must not have any concept on how the rental industry works. See, unlike the 'used game resale' market publishers actually do make a profit off them as many companies like Netflix, RedBox, BB, etc. actually pay publishers of games money for large-volumes of rental inventory & for each time someone rents those titles. a percentage of that is given back to the publishers. It's no different then how the movie/tv industry profit off of movie rentals & pay-per-view. And we can all see Hollywood ain't hurtin', right?

Besides, if someone rents a game & they end up really enjoying it (whether play it to completion while renting it or not), then you've more than like earned yourself a new paying customer, as they will be more inclined to buy that said game. Only way disc-based SP games die is if a dev makes it like crap. So bottom line: don't make s****y SP games & people will gladly buy them; do make them & you're only shooting yourself in the foot.

Sounds like Cliffy needs to stop sounding off on industries that he has no knowledge on and stick to what he knows in the game making side of things.

Well sort of. I mean Blockbuster was dying. But seems like they adapted and are doing ok now, with the online to compete with the likes of Netflix, and their own kiosks to compete with Redbox... Actually, I can't think of the last time I saw a Redbox around where I live. All the places that used to have them have Blockbuster boxes now.

That's true. One of the old stores has a huge banner hanging over the doors (most of the front of the building actually) advertising their "Netflix" type service. I have only seen one kiosk, though, compared to the dozen or so Redbox locations. They may hang on for a while yet, but they certainly aren't monopolizing the movie rental biz like they once did.

Well it's a well known fact in the industry that disk based gaming is on the decline and the triple A highstreet retail big budget title is more financially risky as it ever has been.

They have higher profit margins than all your console releases as well, considering the low production values, and development - as well as the standard PC release. Welcome to the future of the mainstream market it' already here and at GDC it was all the rage in topic.

Red Box Rental actually sounds great. My old College had "Gamefly Rental box" that I used all the time my Sophomore year. The spread of this may actually encourage devs to actually add more depth to their games.

I've been using the Blockbuster Online service for something like 3-4 years, since back before Netflix was big. It's nice, I mean it doesn't have the instant streaming, but half the time stuff I want to stream on Netflix says "dvd only." With BB, if I want to watch something different from what they send me, I can run to the store and trade the mailer for a store rental for free. They get pretty much every new release a month before Netflix or Red Box. And I can use my mailers (I get 3 out at a time) for game rentals, dvd rentals, or bluray rentals without any extra fee (I think Netflix adds a few bucks to your sub if you want bluray instead of dvd). With the game rentals, it's almost like having netflix and gamefly (although I believe the game selection isn't as big as Gamefly) at the same time, for less (My three at a time from BB costs less than a one at a time netflix and one at a time gamefly put together).

Before everyone starts pointing fingers at gaming's favorite whipping boy, Call of Duty, keep in mind that it's not a very good daily rental.

If you plan on playing the multiplayer for a few hundred hours (which literally millions do), then you're going to be buying the game, not renting it.

More companies are just going to include multiplayer codes.

I wanted to rent Homefront from redbox, but I thought it would be pretty stupid if I needed a multiplayer code.

That said, I've probably already rented 5 or so games from redbox. It is a really good service for helping me identify games that I would actually want to buy.

For the most part, 1 day is not enough for me to beat a single-player game though. I go to blockbuster for to rent single-player games because I need 3-5 days to beat those.

I didn't know singleplayer only games that were less than 20 hours still existed nowdays. In fact, the only singleplayer only games that have released recently that I can think of are God of War, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Fallout, and the Elder Scrolls games, and all of those are well over 20 hours. Cliffy B's several years late, singleplayer games have been dead for quite a while.
