There already is a solution. The mute function. In no way possible should racism or any type of vulgar language be expelled more than it already is. Freedom of speech does not diminish just because it's on a video game or another person doesn't "appreciate" it.

Parental controls are fine for younger ones, but trying to block out all racism/vulgarity is ridiculous. Not everyone playing these games are twelve year olds, which apparently the author is only focusing on.

Yeah I usually didnt care when I was younger, but I as I grew I became more aware and less tolerant of this **** and **** that. I mean its okay if they say it on an object/stuff that relates nothing to other users, but when they start directing at people and what they are, it just boils my blood a little bit of course I never take it seriously because is not real life, but some of those kids get quiet rowdy T.T

You can't control what people say. All you can do is mute the people who annoy you, which on XBL is extremely easy. Or even better, just stick to a party of friends and talk with them. Hate speech corrodes life, not just online video games. I hear racism etc. out in the real world as well, yet i dont expect a cop to be on hand to shut the person up. Who cares.

Im glad bungie instituted a individual muteing option in halo 3. Its relaxing to just choose that random a-hole out of a team of 8 and just shut him up and enjoy the game :)

Oh trust me it's just as bad on PSN, no standard mic FTW! :P Anyways to me online games will never be free of racism or hatred. Why? Because people play to relax and vent their pent up feelings from daily life. Just don't take it serious.

its all the internet gangstas who think they are all hard.

the racists who are too scared to confront black,hispanic,etc, face to face.

the screaming 13yr olds who scream on the mic because their parents are too lazy to care what their kids are doing online.

While I am not a fan of hate talk during a game, I think people should grow some tougher skin. If you can not handle that stuff over PSN, PC, or 360, you sure won't make it in the real world.

I play Battlefield: Bad Company a lot online on my PS3 and never hear anything racist or homophobic. Haven't heard any of that on Red Faction: Guerrilla either. Perhaps that will change when I get more online games.

Agreed. Hell I always have to go in party chat because if I go into a game with my friends and we get into friendly banter between one another someone always feels the need to jump in and make it known that they will not tolerate 2 friends making fun of each other then threatening to give me negative feedback.

I could see someone saying do this or that or I will give you negative feedback. O noes, do not make my stars go away :P. Well I honestly think they should leave it alone. People will always be hated on for religion, race, even gender still ( I hate when some guys hear a girl over voice chat, the guys just flip out and harass the poor girls.) The more younger people are sheltered from this fact the tougher it will be to accept if the situation comes up in person.

I'm surprised that developers as well as Microsoft/Sony didn't see this coming. Mixing absolute free speech and teenagers will always have that very same result.

Since this is a topic about online voice crap this seems of relevance. Something I must come out with Just to get this off my chest I have something I must admit. You know that guy that joins a game with his friends (and because ps3 doesn't have party chat) completely fills the voice chat signals with random random and I mean RANDOM talk (once we had a loud argument about who rossie mcdonald would rather date.... Nathan hale or a eucadian from warhawk). Im the guy who randomly starts singing lady gags bad romance (all messed) up into the mic randomly with a friend for over 7 uncharted matches leaving other members raging (then chase after them into a diff match :evil: ). Im that guy that treats online game chat like his personal chat room. Im worse then those potty mouths...............Im JUST ONE HUGE RANDOM MOUTH .....................I SHALL NOW HIDE.....>.

I think perhaps they should block hate speech users from public servers. These little Ps. O.S. who are so insecure and self-absorbed and don't give a crap about anything but their gratification could learn a lesson about being civilized. The online world really shows you how pathetic a great number people are and I say (censored) these worthless people. Part of being in public, offline and on is being civilized.

Well when I had a PS3 I noticed racial comments were no where near as abundent then it was on 360. Though when I first played Warhawk I was in a game where it got really out of hand. In my experience I have found the PC to have less immature players, though there are still people that do it on there also.

In this case, blame the PLAYERS....NOT the games.

There is really no solution to this problem, imo.

Morons will be morons. Just as long as these turds HIDE behind their PSN IDs and Gamertags, there will always be wannabe tough guys, racist and homophobic rants online.

And it's one of the reasons I refuse to use mics during online gaming. Hell, I RARELY play online. In fact I despise MP almost completely. Long live SP campaigns! If its any indication, I'm playing BFBC2 Single Player in my 3rd run on hard, and loving it.

Nor do I have Twitter or Facebook.

I love when they talk smack right before I own them. People just need to stop being to sensitive. Kindergartners already lost dodge ball due to it being an elimination game.

People have to thin of skin now. Some need to lighten up and just laugh at it all or at least brush it off and ignore it. Most of my online gaming was with WoW and in battlegrounds, Wintergrasp, and in the cities it can get pretty brutal. I always thought it was funny and the times I did not I just ignored it.

As my college professor says, the whole thing about people being equal is a myth. We are really not equal tbh. I am not really talking about race, everyone has the potential to be equal, but it does not work out that way.

this is complete garbage... EVERYTHING must be regulated now-a-days... can't we at least have freedom of speech when playing online!?!? better to get out your anger with words than with killing other people.

The thing people are mistaking is that freedom of speech doesn't apply in this realm. PSN, XBL, and servers for PC games can all make their own rules and enforce them in the manner they wish. Because its a private domain.

We don't have freedom of speech here on GS because in their TOU they have stated what is allowed and not allowed. I do wish that people who are being stupid did get banned. It'd make them think twice about their behavior online. Hell countless people got banned back in the CSS server I used to play on. And they had really strict rules and some I didn't agree with but it was a great place to play and I'd take that server 10 times out of 10 over some of the other servers where you can say the N-word or call someone a ***.

Thankfully there is a mute button and for now is an acceptable solution but I wouldn't be opposed to banning people for their behavior online. Its no different than if they were glitching or hacking, if they are being a dbag and making the game un-enjoyable for others than their privilege for fun should end.

You seem to think you have rights on a pay-for service. You don't. You have just as much 'right to free speech' using those companies online services as you do here at GameSpot. Now, try to fill a post here at GS with trash-talk and porn and see how far your rights extend.

Have to agree with you on this one. MS, Sony, etc. own and provide the service to people, so they're (partly) responsible for setting a TOU policy, enforcing it and holding its users accountable for their actions. In fact, I probably wouldn't be too far off in saying that most of the main offenders online have no sense of the word "accountability", and have probably never been held accountable for anything in thier lives.

I've played with a few Europeans and they were very polite and most of the time their english is very good, much better than a lot of the american born people I talk to online and IRL. They are a lot crazier too, there's this portuguese guy I play BFBC2 with and I swear the dude is obsessed with tanks, he always manages to get one up on mountains and once he tried to get one on top of a Black Hawk.:lol: The guy is awesome!

The problem with matchmaking is that it is random and that there is no player policing. The player-hosted dedicated server model works much better, because you have admins and expectations of behavior. When I played Modern Warfare 2 during the free weekend on Steam, I of course met someone who was intent on calling everyone....a nasty racial slur. However, I managed to humiliate him in game....though this enraged him, when I amped up the trolling, he ragequit. I was quite satisfied. It really cuts both ways. The way I find to deal with trolls, losers, racists, or annoying children in these wild west types of settings is to flame them vociferously until they ragequit. And active muting really helps, particularly with snot-nosed children and micspammers. I almost think VOIP should be invite-only....my default rule is to turn voice chat off. I don't understand why console gamers trump it up as the greatest feature of all time when the console platform has the most noise-infested and lawless environment for voice chat I've ever seen.

While we are talking about PSN, anyone notice how on MW2 every single person is a 13 year old British kid with a feminine voice? Sure every once in a while you'll run into some french guy or some American guy, but 9/10 times it's a feminine sounding spoiled British brat. :x

The best solution I think is to use the 'only communicate with friends' option on Xbox live. Because this trash talk puts me off too.

The report thing doesn't work, I got reported for use of language, just because I was winning. I don't use the mic.

The only thing I can think of is having software which recognises these words and automatically reports people.

And the people that talk about freedom of speech can take their crap elsewhere, Xbox live is not the medium for this, it just sucks out the enjoyment for other gamers.

I've noticed freedom of speech is usually brought up conveniently, you have the right to say what you want and I respect that, but then I have the right to be provoked. Thats what I hate about human rights groups sometimes, they support aspects of humanity while condoning the suppression of human nature. If someone talked to you like that in the street, it would be difficult to hold your self back. So what do they want us to do on live when someone is shouting out racial slurs, try to have a debate on why I shouldn't have to go back to my own country?... with some 15 year old.

And I don't know about others, I don't like to speak for people, but I don't wanna hear a speech on anything serious while i'm playing.

I don't see much in that article that is helpful, but it's good they are exploring new systems to deal with this.

These are private online communities, There is no "Free Speech". Also, Hate speech is not free speech as it is not protected.

To anybody who says they have a right to free speech on Xbox Live here is a direct quote for the Xbox Live Terms of Use that anyone must agree to before they can use the service.

In addition, your use of the Service is subject to your compliance with the Code of Conduct (www.xbox.com/en-us/legal/codeofconduct.htm and its successors). You agree that we may also discontinue your access to the Service if you do any of the following while connected to the Service:

  • Defame, abuse, harass, stalk, threaten, or otherwise violate the legal rights (such as rights of privacy and publicity) of others;
  • Publish, distribute, or disseminate any inappropriate, profane, defamatory, infringing, obscene, indecent, or unlawful content, topic, name, material, file, or information;
  • Publish, distribute, or disseminate any content, topic, name, material, file, or information that incites, advocates, promotes, depicts, constitutes, or expresses child pornography, profanity, hatred, bigotry, racism, illegal drug use, gratuitous or graphic violence, or criminal or fraudulent activity;
  • Create a Gamertag , avatar or use text in other profile fields that may offend other members. This includes comments that look, sound like, stand for, hint at, abbreviate, or insinuate or relate to any of the following: profane words/phrases, topics or content of a sexual nature, hate speech (including but not limited to racial, ethnic, or religious slurs), illegal drugs/controlled substances, or illegal activities;
