First Bioware with Mass Effect, now Capcom with RE. It's really unsettling seeing many of these elite developers taking this path of watering down games to appease a larger audience.

mitu123

It's all about the big bucks now.

Err a business's goal is to make money.. :|

And IMO Mass Effect's RPG elements were pretty.. well pretty piss poor. Mass Effect 2 arguably improved the gameplay, by removing stupid .2 or .5 percentage increases, as well as taking only, y'know, important skills and making those the focus. I always found the leveling system in Mass Effect to be extremely poor, albeit very fun.

But Mass Effect 2 was waaaay more fun.

Well it had co-op, and a stomp button, which to me makes it better than RE4.

Well at least we still have dead space for survival horror. The only parts that looked good on the RE6 trailer were Leons, everything else screamed lets continue from RE5 Gears clone

amnesia is nerve-wracking. it plays with your mind and keeps you in suspense. i never said it was the scariest game ever, but dead space consists of having these badass guns and walking through dimly lit corridors while you wait for gross monsters to play peekaboo with you. a lot of other things are scarier.

I'm a huge fan of Amnesia's style of horror, and occasionally it can be very scary, but I was disappointed mostly. I prefer Penumbra much more than Amnesia, but mostly it's because of the general story and atmosphere is a little less cheesy than Amnesia. It also reminded me of The Thing film, which is always good

COD is satan.Vickman178
CoD is incredibly fun... and keeping an industry profitable that has almost 200 million units of install base, and most games barely break 1 million units sold. If developers have to attract new crowds because the ones they are currently pandering to aren't buying their games, then that isn't their fault.

Edit: While I'm here. Freaking RE Outbreak sold more than Code Veronica.forgot_it
*gasp* A Dreamcast game didn't sell well! Using Code Veronica as a gold standard of bad sales is just using the Dreamcasts terrible demise as a linchpin in a sales argument. One could even go as far to say REmake was on the wrong system, I mean seriously...gamecube? Maybe if they had put some effort into it and released the game on Gamecube and PS2 we would have seen a far different story.

I'm pretty sure it didn't end up on the PS2 because of the Unreal Engine 2, which was used to make it. UE2 ran like crap on the PS2, as did many multiplat engines.

That's alright. More customers for Visceral Games and Dead Space - but here's to hoping they don't go down the same path as Capcom. I can't say I'm surprised. I saw the changes coming to the series a long time ago. And I still stand by my opinion that Resident Evil 5 is an abomination to the survival-horror series. It was essentially an action-shooter and doesn't deserve to be in the same genre ever again. As for RE6, I'll have to wait and see, but I'm guessing it will follow suit. I don't trust what this Dave Turner says. He's probably a freak.

It's a shame they can't make a game that attracts the resident evil crowd. sounds like this is going to be "call of resident modern battlefield evil"

I agree with all of these posts. Leon is the only thing that is holding this RE6 game together. The last hope, you could say. Amnesia might be "scarier" than Dead Space, but DS at least retains that dark atmosphere and sense of survival (play the game on hard mode). On top of that, it does offer some jump-scares depending on your level of macho-manliness (rating scale 1-10).

From the games mentioned above, I'd rank them like this in terms of scariness...

Tier 1: Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Amnesia

Tier 2: Old Resident Evil, Dead Space

Tier 3: New Resident Evil

Through ports and rereleases.

Jag85

http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/business/million.html

This covers RE5.

Let's break it down:

Best-selling on a single platform: RE2

Best-selling on multiple platforms: RE4

Best selling multi-platform launch: RE5

Another fact I discovered is that both RE1 and RE2 actually sold more than RE5 overall...

Resident Evil (Original + Director's Cut + Remake) = 2.75 million + 2.33 million + 1.35 million = 6.43 million

Resident Evil 2 (Original + Dual Shock Edition) = 4.96 million + 810,000 = 5.77 million

Resident Evil 5 (PS3 + 360) = 5.6 million

Overall, the best-selling RE games are as follows:

1. Resident Evil 4 - 7.03 million
2. Resident Evil - 6.43 million
3. Resident Evil 2 - 5.77 million
4. Resident Evil 5 - 5.6 million
5. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis - 3.5 million
6. Resident Evil Code:Veronica - 2.54 million
7. Resident Evil Outbreak - 1.45 million
8. Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles - 1.3 million
9. Resident Evil 0 - 1.25 million

In other words, RE5 is the fourth best-selling game in the series, after RE4, RE1, and RE2.

Not quite. People "p!$$ed and moaned" because RE5 changed it up a bit too much (though not as much as RE4).

It seems you haven't been fallowing anything... people wanted the game to go back to its roots, be more of a survival horror game(like capcom said they would), not change for the sake of changing. Personally I'm extremely excited with the announcement and I thought the trailer looked pretty good(a bit on the action side ,but we'll see when it comes out.)

Of course... look at that stupid trailer, it looks nothing like RE4 or earlier ones. Think RE6 will score an 8 and 1 week after its release it will be forgotten,

It never works out well when devs say this stuff. I feel sorry for RE fans.001011000101101

Ace combat AH is a good example, while its a fun game it lacks the same feeling of the old games by focusing more on big bangs than the more anime esque strange as hell superweapons and alt world for a generic zomg russians attacking Americans.

they should have just made a new franchise insteadXenoNinja
So true -_- And I'm not even a traditonalise. If they made a game just like RE4, I'd be love struck. I don't get the hate for RE4 not being a "surival horror" I found it to be just as "scary" as the traditional REs. It had lots of action bits yes, but it also kept the suspense. Being surrounded by ganados at every turn with limited ammunition, it is a surival game. And look at the regnerators, those made the game the most suspenseful. Oh but I cant forget the right hand or whatever its called. That midget guy sends to kill you. It was awesome.
Resident Evil 5 wasn't like that though. It was simply: Resident evil 5: Gears of Wars. And yes, I know gears of wars borrowed stuff from RE4, but they still remain very differernt from each other. I've played all the RE remakes and liked them all, but RE4 was by far my favorite. Revelations, I'm sure will be a tough competitor against RE4 :)
