They have no story at all, there is just nothign to drive the game forward. Its like oh cool, ill have fun for a bit but then it gets so boring. Like, having no story is fine if its multiplayer but not when its singleplayer. I mean honestly, how can you have fun playing mario?

Ok let me get this straight, so YOUR saying that Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime, StarFox 64, Goldeneye, Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day ain't got no story :|

Goldoneye was based off a movie, it will have a story.

All the other games you mentioned other than twilight princess and ocarina had one cutscene in the beginning and then one cutscene at the end. Great story there. And im not a fan boy, i had the n64 and have the gc. I played all the games you listed above except conkers. Twilight Princess was a VERY good game but i stopped playing it because there was barely any story to drive it forward. Which is kind of messed up as it has the most story a nintendo game has ever had.

I can probably predict the plots of stories for 95% of video games by just playing them for 10 minutes.

Well I like their games because they are fun. If I wanted a story I'd read a book or play a story driven game like an RPG.

"I mean honestly, how can you have fun playing mario?" Because they still have not ruined the franchise with an awfull excuse for a story, like the Sonic franchise. That usually happens when you do that with a game, in wich its high appeal was not its story in the first place.

The Mario RPG's I can understand, but the Mario platformers? The day one character in the Mario universe is to be taken  more seriously then they should, its the day the series eventually dies.

I like mix of both, imo a game cant be good without the other. Some games are just fun because they are even though theeyre plot is plain okay ex: geow. But games like mario, i just cant really play them too long, they get so boring. I like Zelda except i hate the dungeons, i quit twlight princess and ocarina in the dungeons. I was pretty far in twilight too.

Sports and racing games are a different matter. They are more oriented towards multiplayer. Like i said in the first post for SINGLEPLAYER a game must have good story to be good.

Ive completed Wind Wakers. Story was minimal in the game. I'll list all the GC games i have: wind wakers, twilight, super smash bros, wave race, luigis mansion, super mario sunshine, Eternal Darkness, resident evil 4(another example of a game which imo is fun even though it has minimal plot), star wars rebel assault(or somethinglike that, the first one), i might be missing some but im prolly not.

I think the only reason ppl end games like Super Mario is to get a feeling of self-achievment or something. Just trying to finish what they start, i mean, im pretty sure you cant have fun playing super mario games after 5 hrs.

T_B_B

Most the people that bought it?  From my experience.

Of course, if plot and story were so huge, Nintendogs, Brain Age and Mario would sell next to nothing.  They didn't.

You see, it's again just your preference, which appears to point that you have a rather minimal attention span, and little imagination.

:| even then, the plot, the stories of those mentioned games aren't even on par with books.

It's like the PC argument, if you want the best graphics, AI and physics, just get a PC. If you want the best stories/plots, just go read a book.

Dude, Nintendo was the company that started putting stories in games. They pretty much saved gaming by putting stories in games. Do some research before you open your mouth.  I mean sure the plots might not be great, but I have never played a video game with a good plot. The thing that makes stories in video games good for me are memorable characters with a lot of personality, and I cant think of any other companies besides Blizzard and Square that work as hard to make their characters memorable as Nintendo does.

I'd be willing to take that bet, given that you've consistently confused heavy amounts of dialogue and exposition with story. The Zelda games have a strong narrative thread, at least as strong as what you'll find in Metal Gear or Final Fantasy: what they lack are long stretches of dialogue, and a surfeit of cut scenes.

Unless you also contend that there's no narrative to ICO, or Shadow of the Colossus.

So what if they started it? Why cant they better what they started then? Companies like Squaresoft and developers like Hideo Kojima can incorporate great gameplay with great stories, why cant nintendo do it? Honestly, how hard is it to put a bit plot in the game to actually give you an incentive to move forward. I know A LOT of ppl who just leave games like Mario in the middle because they cant find any reason to go on.

whats so great about a story in games

its nothing unique to the gaming genre... stories are for books... and some films

i swear most games with stories i generally skip the cutscenes, unless its some scifi world and even then sometimes..

it's like somebody making a mediocre movie and then slapping a billion dollar orchestrated soundtrack to it... Oops , see Jerry Bruckheimer

why cant games rely soley on something unique to the gaming genre... gameplay

the marriage is more artistic than any game with an epic storyline and soundtrack...

don't get me wrong, some games can suck you in their world

some people want to be put directly into the action though , without being interrupted

are genres allowed to exist that lack the depth of a storyline? say goodbye to sim/puzzle games, rhythm games etc.. these are immersing you in other ways

i'd love to play chess but it's not deep enough without a storyline based on william shakespeares writing

as for the record, the wii is the first nintendo console i've owned, but it wasn't because of storylines that i decided to finally buy a nintendo console

other than for maybe FMVs, i've never bought a game FOR a story.. it's more of an incentive to finish the game

something like MGS i just wish i could extract the story and save myself the trouble of playing the game

i will tell you however, after focusing on PC gaming for so long, it was actually refreshing to go back to the console and play some singleplayer games.. sometimes you need some scripted linear progression

but the funny thing is, it took borrowing my friends GC to get me back into consoles.. it started with MP(which was too overwhelming for me actually) and Eternal Darkness

Maybe you should actually play some Nintendo games before you say they don't have a story.16bitkevin

Story is what makes playing the game rewarding.  It's the future of game development.

You seem to be confusing "plot" with "emo sobbing". I loved  Square so much more when the plot of Final Fantasy had to do with light warriors. And you can have great gameplay and great story without some cheesy "deep plot", which really just servers to get in the way of the gameplay. Play Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime and tell me it doesn't have a good story.

The story should serve as a catalyst for the gameplay, the gameplay should not be an excuse to tell the story.

I call BS. You wouldn't have bought all of Nintendo's biggest games if you didn't like their style.
