Call of Duty sales slow down as casual buyers find entertainment elsewhere
by Frank Cifaldi

Previous analyst predictions were right: it looks like ongoing sales of the annual Call of Duty franchise are beginning to slow down.

Life-to-date sales of 2011's entry Modern Warfare 3 are behind where 2010's Black Ops was at this time last year, despite the former having a stronger debut.

While exact sales numbers are not public, analysts at Macquarie Equities say that Modern Warfare 3 volume sales are behind by around 4.2 percent.

Notably, March sales in particular were damning, with last month's sales of Modern Warfare 3 reportedly less than half the amount that Black Ops sold at that time last year.

Analysts at PiperJaffray say that these numbers cound indicate significant changes in the market: specifically, the firm believes that casual players -- those who don't necessarily purchase a game at launch -- are buying less games at retail, and are instead using their consoles primarily for video streaming and other forms of media consumption.

Webush Securities analyst Michael Pachter added that March's weak performance could indicate that software sales are becoming more reliant on new releases, meaning consumers are less often buying games after their initial debut.

Publisher Activision Blizzard does not rely entirely on boxed retail sales for Call of Duty revenue. In fact, 34 percent of the company's revenue in its last fiscal quarter came from digital sales, much of that from the 1.5 million annual premium subscribers to its Call of Duty Elite service.Gamasutra

Honestly, I can't blame anyone. Modern Warfare 3 was crap, and a greater letdown coming from the consistently fun and exhilerating Black Ops. I can only hope that this year's Black Ops 2 will be as good as Black Ops was, and that it performs accordingly.

The Treyarch games are great fun. Black Ops in particular was great. I hope Black Ops 2 is as good as the first one was. In any case, I called that Black Ops would be where Call of Duty would peak a long time ago.

All they have to do is put some effort into the games (or make some more false promises) and it will rise again.

You all need to STFU about the Treyarch games. CoD3 was not as good as CoD2 and World at War was not as good as Modern Warfare. The only time Treyarch had a leg up on Infinity Ward was Black Ops being better than Modern Warfare 2, and even then BO was not that good to begin with.

All they have to do is make sure the games are fun again. That's what's always been Call of Duty's mojo. They might not be the best made games around, but they're so much fun that it doesn't matter. Modern Warfare 3 totally lost that, and like I said, after how good Black Ops, it felt like a major step down. Bad word of mouth and consequently, poor sales for that game, then, aren't that big of a surprise. To repeat, hopefully, Black Ops 2 will be as good as Black Ops was, and will therefore perform accordingly.

3 was a disaster. I don't even know why I gave any Treyarch Call of Duty game a chance after how bad 3 was, honestly. But then, Modern Warfare 2 was as big a disaster, and Modern Warfare 3 is even worse. Infinity Ward peaked with CoD 2 and 4. Treyarch? Evidence points to them improving, not declining.

I'll believe it's dying when record sales stop beating themselves -- breaking consecutive guinness world records and all that jazz.

Gimmie a break. MW3 broke sells records again. CoD may have reached it's peek, but it sure as hell aint dying. All the franchise needs is some damn innovation, and the franchise would be fresh again. I mean hell it's been five years since the game has had anything meaningful innovation.

I don't think it's so much CoD that people are getting tired of, but more of people just getting sick of MW3. That game was pretty mediocre...

I disagree. IMO, Black Ops was the only COD game worthy of being a sequel to COD4. WaW was tired the day it released.

I disagree. I hated Black Ops. It had the worst single player and some very bad decisions in multiplayer. I quite enjoyed MW3. The single player was average but had some memorable moments. The spec ops was a lot better. And the multiplayer is fun, though very flawed.

More than Modern Warfare 3? Yeah... I mean, at last count, Modern Warfare 3 had sold 9.4 million, right? That's... a third of what Black Ops sold. Black Ops stayed at the top of the NPD charts for a YEAR. It was replaced only by Modern Warfare 3. Which lost its position in three months. I'm telling you, Infinity Ward isn't up to scratch anymore. Treyarch Call of Duty games are consistently more fun, and Activision should refocus the franchise now.

Down 4.2 percent? That's it? Seems like someone was having a slow news day. Call of Duty isn't going anywhere any time soon.

Honestly, I think you would be in the minority. Most people swear by Black Ops, hate Modern Warfare 3. Black Ops had a really cool single player campaign. The entire Cold War/conspiracy theory sh*t was really cool. It had great pacing, was exciting, and just felt satisfying. The multiplayer was great for parties. Modern Warfare 3 feels soulless by comparison.

Okay , It beat Blops in the initial sale , which means more people had it and less people had to buy it. Which would explain why it was down. DERP. But seriously it broke sales records across all forms of entertainment. Soo yeah I doubt it is "dying"

You probably didnt play BO on Ps3. The game's multi was broken upon release. It was later "fixed". But the graphics were still horrible (probably the worst in the series), the hit detection was poor (also the worst in the series) and it was just generally laggy. My biggest problem with the game was the lag and bad hit detection. Anyone will agree that MW2 was much smoother and more precise.

Actually, Black Ops was the last game I played on the PS3 :P Yes, it was broken on the PS3, I agree. Thankfully, I played it most on the Xbox, so there were no worries there. But if you played it on PS3, I can see where you're coming from.

[QUOTE="BPoole96"]

[QUOTE="charizard1605"] It's debut was actually down 4.2% over Black Ops'. Activision was talking only in terms of revenue, and that revenue included money from Call of Duty Elite.

Idk man I just found this

Day one records, yes, you're right. Month one records? MW3 was down over Black Ops.

Because they got it on the first day.

I'd bet that Black Ops 2 outsells Black Ops.

Okay, let's look at it this way. By this point in its life, Black Ops had sold 18 million. At this point in its life, Modern Warfare 3 has sold 9.4 million (someone correct me if I am wrong). Noticing the problem?

[QUOTE="charizard1605"][QUOTE="Androvinus"][QUOTE="charizard1605"]Honestly, I think you would be in the minority.

It kills me when people say that game was BROKEN on PS3. No it was NOT broken. I bought the game just days after launch. The game was FAR from "broken". There was a "blog post" or "article" or whatever you want to call what gets posted on N4G as "news" and the guy said BO on PS3 was "unplayable". The game was absolutely not "unplayable", and the guy changed his article. I think "broken" gets thrown out there even when it's not right.

Okay, broken is an exaggeration :P It was just... poorly done. Poorly made. I can say this as someone who played both the Xbox and PS3 versions.

Can you show me ? Cause it broke 1 billion (mw3) in 16 days and took Blops 2 months. and at the moment according to vgchartz , if u find it reputable , mw3 has around 25.5 mil sold and blops has about 24.6 mil.

lol That's better but I still disagree. I never played the XBox version but I swear I never felt a difference in BO over the previous PS3 CoD's.
