I have mixed feelings about RE4. On one side I loved it but on the other side I resent that they changed the original formula from survival horror to a TPS action game. I love the original REs and I'm sad the game is never going back to its roots.

RE4 was a million times better than RE5. RE4 still had some hints of old school RE in it. RE5 was Rambo simulator.

I beat RE4 probably 50 times on the GC and am now playing it again on my 360. I beat RE5 once and never touched it again.

I am hoping that RE6 goes back to its roots and gives us a SURVIVAL HORROR RE GAME.

Survival Horror used to be a close relative of the adventure game and that's how I prefered it. Too many shooters and RE 4 led to RE 5 which was nothing but another horde mode shooter.

I've played one too many shooters. For that reason Code Veronica has been a lot more fun. Lining up those old school shots and hording ammo has been a blast so far.

I'm not going to try to argue with whoever quoted me, saying Resident Evil 5 was a game of 4s caliber. Or whoever said Dead Space is too. This is what I will say. Those games, mechanically were superior, on a technical level it they are superior but in terms of pure level design and tension I do believe in all honestly that 4 is one of the greatest games ever and surpasses those two games by a friggin mile.

This is my opinion, I've finished 5 and honestly could not even bother finishing Dead Space. I'm not bagging those games, they are good in their own right but 4 is on another level.

It's really neither here nor there. It is a survival horror or a shooter? The first half the game it's not sure. By the second half, and for five, it was a shooter. Too bad, so much more can be done with online co-op especially. Just another game with players in different skins. No character.

Does it matter in the end? It doesn't stop 4 from being a great game. One of my favourite series this generation has an "identity crisis" you could say, that being Mass Effect, and it doesn't stop that series from being loved my millions. Is that a shooter, an RPG, dating sim? Who cares, Mass Effect 1, especially 2 are considered masterpieces.

It matters to me. I love shooters, I truly do, but having so many games just become another shooter makes me sad. I loved the old school adventure game-play and the RE Outbreak games had so much potential. Sadly, people want to exploit games more then play them.

Even Silent Hill added a gun merchant this generation. I really like Dead Space for what it is but I miss survival horror. RE had a good run but I've played so many shooters; and online co-op loses game-play and character in favor ofdead give aways.

Take cover and go for the headshot has gotten really boring.

It is a very well made third-person shooter in Resident Evil clothing. It does things that Resident Evil was never known for. Had it been called something else, I probably would have enjoyed it more (as a game, it is great, and I can see why so many people like it) but to me, it just didn't "feel" like Resident Evil. Leon was a walking tank (without the tank controls, lol) and could mow down hordes of enemies in seconds with the shotgun you get in the first village. Ammo is everywhere and the only enemies that were a real cause of anxiety were the Regenerators. One never feels compelled to run away... and is almost always forced to fight. I'm still waiting for that "RE3.5" to make it to production. That would have been an amazing game. And would have been "Resident Evil 4."

brilliant scenario and enemy design. there are just so many things re4 did right that its hard to cram into a post. theres just never a time where it settles into an easy groove. it might be lighting that hides dangers in a way consistent with the game world (as opposed to awful camera angles from RE1 that cut off half the room for no purpose other than to look "cinematic"), a section that takes away your ability to run, a village siege in which the villagers WILL get inside (its more damage control than anything), invisible enemies that make the whole room crawl, a person you need to protect, or a terrifying creature that will kill you if you panic. it just never turns into a frag-fest. theres always something extra to the situation.

My point is strictly on Resident Evil 4 so I'm not entirely sure why you are bringing up cover mechanics which that game did not employ or co-op gameplay.

Anyhow I think I understand your point somewhat, you are saying 4 ushered in a bunch of games which cloned the staple gameplay of it and you want pure survival horror back?

It's not 4s fault that their are so many designers copy it's formula (I'd even argue level design wise 4 does it better) but it truly isn't but it does go to show you 4s caliber as a game in the grand scheme today. It shows youhow even game designers drew inspiration from that game and implemented various features and mechanics into their game, a true testimate to Resident Evil 4s quality that so many people are willing to copy it.

C'mon now, the formula was growing to be hella stale with those other titles, it needed RE4 bigtime.

Cant you say the same about 4 and 5 though?! The Formula got stale. The franchise needs to create 2 different titles from ORC for the Run N Gun fans and Revelations for the Old School Fans.

So your saying it didn't feel like past games? That's fine but those games don't just define the series, 4 should too. Try playing Code Veronica today, the gameplay there is out of style.

Lastly I don't know what you mean that ammo is everywhere, it get's very sparce in many sections of the game where you are forced to use your knife because you don't have anymore bullets.

Why? Why can't RE4 have just been a new IP? Everyone keeps talking about how new IP is such a great thing. Did you watch that RE3.5 video? Because that's how I envisioned a sequel to RE3 being like. Not a full-on TPS. I always will say that RE4 was a very well-made game... it just isn't what I think RE4 should have been.

There's no reason it could not have been aside from the fact that, many felt that series needed something new and 4 was the answer. It might not have been the answer you wanted but it was an answer that resonated with MANY people.

Because those people no longer wanted to play an "RE" game. It's not really an "answer" in terms of providing something new for RE, because it's not built off of RE. In fact, it's design is generally in the complete opposite in terms of RE.

You know what brought something new? REmake. Burning zombies was the most important change the series had ever seen. RE gameplay had plenty of potential to improve.

I never liked the other Resident Evil games before RE4. They weren't scary, the gameplay was horrid, and the voice acting was god-awful. RE4 is easily the best game in the series and people who say otherwise just can't stand progress.

Or we just can't stand particular types of progress that drastically change the entire game. 3D Mario games between SM64 and SMG2 changed less than RE3 to 4. For instance, they went from virus to semi-sentient parasite. It would be like changing the Locust in Gears into the Necromorphs from Dead Space. Sure, they serve a similar purpose, but completely alter the tone (especially when origin stories are concerned). What's your favourite game series? How would you feel if the developers just decided to drop everything good about it that you enjoy and replace it with something completely different designed for a totally different audience? Sometimes when one steps into another's shoes, it can be a little enlightening.

Progress means you have to start from the point you're supposedly "progressing" from.

I don't think the changes in RE4 were this small, even in the story. How about how they ended an unresolved story with a voiceover in the first five minutes of the game?

No some people who dont count it as the best dont like it not cause of progress no its because it doesint feel like a RE game. RE4 has zero atmosphere and is more of a shooter then a survival horror game. Hell they even gave the enimies guns. What were they smoking when they thought of that. I still say REmake is proboly the last best RE game from memory imo.

I think you can aim with the left trigger and shoot with the right trigger in the HD version of RE4. It's one of the control schemes.

Well, if there was anything they kept with RE4 from the previous iterations, it was the characters. I kind of lol'd when you mentioned them, thinking back on Leon, the girl and the munchkin. Condemned had an extremely strong antagonist, and an especially good story. I'm not even sure you played the game when you say RE4 is better.

Trust me, beaten both Condemned 1 and 2 many times. I love the forensic-factor behind it and it does set it self apart from many Survival horror games which i why many think C1 is so unique. But like i said, the setting, atmosphere and characters in RE4 are much more appealing. Yes, C1 had a strong and profound story concerning forensics/serial killer. But i started off with Resident Evil....so throw a bit of nostalgia in there too. :)

I would strongly disagree with these. As for design, maybe a bit. But only in the sense that RE4 is more approachable in terms of what it's trying to do.

I thought they ruined Leon and Ada. :( I felt that they were more complex characters in RE2.

You can aim with the left trigger and shoot with the right. You can also use your knife with the left bumper and right trigger.
