I feel the hype right now. An 86 on meta is solid- but I think even more importantly, there are a bunch of 100's and 90's as well as that 50 and 70. Which means some people sincerely loved it. If everybody thought it was decent (7's and 8's) I'd be less hyped. The SLIGHT polarization makes me thirsty for this game

@jumpaction: Indeed I am, played almost every title in the series....enjoyed each game to varying degrees, including 5 & 6.

While I didn't really mind the focus on more action as of late, I much prefer the direction of RE7 which seems more about horror and atmosphere. I'll find out soon enough where this game stands for me, been a while since I haven't played a high-profile horror game such as Silent Hill or Evil Within, so I'm excited in that regard as well, not just because it is Resident Evil.

That's great man! I'm really happy for you. :)

I have a friend who is also a big RE fan so he is going to be really happy to get this one.

Doesn't look like a resident evil game. Doesn't really look like a good game either.

It does look like something original and well crafted, I guess some people will like this but I'm not going to be one of them.

It's funny how if a game is not a Sony exclusive around here then all of a sudden an 8/10 with a metacritic score in the 80s is not considered a flop.

Anyway. Great to see the game is scoring well. Looks awesome.

**** me the beginning is awesome, really promising! Playing in VR of course ;)

Edit: Some videos in the game had this weird flickering light in the up right corner, a graphical bug, I wonder if they're going to fix that.

I've been watching the live play on youtube for several hours. Way too much filler and back tracking, not enough action. Enemies are generic and boring, not enough variety.

So what connection does this have to the established Resident Evil lore? I always thought that giving the spotlight in the main series to a story that has no connections to the previous games was really weird (Especially given the gigantic scale of previous games), so is there anything here that can convincingly connect it with the RE continuity? Capcom specifically said that the old RE games still count and none of them have been erased from this game's universe, so what gives?

@taternator:

Metroid Prime is a series known for having lots of back-tracking and a lower emphasis on action but it's a widely regarded series.

I'm sure the appeal of RE7 is there and people seem to be really enjoying it.

Saw the ending. Won't spoil it but I'll just say it was anti-climactic. The series has really taken a step back from RE4. This game just lacks in everything except environment. You can tell a lot of effort went in to making the set pieces, but the rest seemed rushed and budgeted big time.

They cut corners on enemies, characters, voice acting, story concept. Big step backwards for the series. Probably all done in order to promote PSVR.

I don't know as I have seen very little footage of the game but so far people seem happy with it, which is good.

And I certainly wouldn't know either as I haven't played much of the series. I'm just happy the fans are happy.

No clue... none of us have played it yet. But if you watch IGNs review...

They say as the story progresses, it ties it back nicely to the original series.

I feel like IGN gave it a 7.7 as a joke. The review was really positive. "Most fun I've had with Resident Evil in years." - 7.7

That never entered my mind for a second. I'd never expect narrative consistency from a series so devoid of literary merit hahahha. If the lack of obvious connection to the series' "lore" is your barrier to entry, you probably weren't that interested in what you saw in the first place.

Thanks for the warning but I've been gaming since the Intellivision. I've had years to manage the juggling of hype and critical investigation lol. Last time hype burned me was State of Emergency (Rockstars first release after GTA III).

I'm gud.

Well if you know what you like, I guess you're "gud" then. But if you are a fan of the series, then you at least can recognize the downgrade compared to previous entries. This game offers little challenge even at the highest difficulty. If you're fine with presentation and little else, I guess a purchase is warranted.

There's nothing wrong with warning people before they walk in to a trap. This industry feeds on hype and false promises. It's also very anti-consumer.

More people should be critical instead of happy go lucky. Many will be disappointed with their purchases, but to proud to admit a mistake so they'll just grin and bear it.

Been a huge fan of the series since the '96 original. My favorites currently are 2, REmake, and 4 and I absolutely adore what I've experienced in the demo several times through. I don't consider it a downgrade in the slightest. Maybe my definitions of what makes a good Resident Evil game aren't as rigid as yours.

@taternator:

And there are also going to be those who will be satisfied with their purchase. It's fine to make an assessment, pass judgement on how you feel about a game but there needs to be empathy in that too. Telling people they will be disappointed is cynical language. Let people experience it themselves and make up their own minds. :)

I'm sure most people who have interest in the game have seen the footage and have some idea as to what they're expecting/hoping for the game, which even that will differ from person to person.

It's good that you're concerned and trying to help people, of course. Personally, I'd love to see more posts from you regarding the games you do enjoy. :)

Wrong...a flop is determined by the SWs hype score vs the GS score. That' is the SWs way, don't try changing it now.

Nope. I'm still debating if I'll go with HTC Hive or just deal with PSVR but I'm thinking about PSVR since it's easy to use VR.

Wow a RE game getting anything over a 7 is incredible. But i do not like the claustrophobic 1st person view with a 60 FOV. Not having difficult puzzles is another minus.

I can understand the fov critique. I suppose they did so that the claustrophobia makes you feel unsettled and adds to the atmosphere and for me it totally works. I wonder if there's a slider in the full game cuz I don't remember seeing one in the demo.

I can't remember any of the puzzles in the main games (1-5, veronica, Remake) being particularly difficult though. They inspired exploration and trial and error sure, but I wouldn't call any of them difficult.

Isn't that what people were complaining about with recent Resident Evil games? Too much action and not enough horror?

Gamers really need to get their priorities straight.

One question, and no spoilers please...Is this actually tied into the story or cannon of the previous numbered RE games?

There's very little horror in this game though. You mostly sift through cabinets and break wooden boxes for loot. Very little interactions with monsters, and when you do encounter them they are not scary or hard to kill. What's the point of playing the game unless you enjoy checking desks and counters for goodies?

Box breaking simulator.

This is what i meant. The puzzles in the RE7 shouldn't even be considered as puzzles.

I've been watching the live play on youtube for several hours. Way too much filler and back tracking, not enough action. Enemies are generic and boring, not enough variety.

Isn't that what people were complaining about with recent Resident Evil games? Too much action and not enough horror?

Gamers really need to get their priorities straight.

Interesting. For context on where you're coming from, what do you consider a good horror game?

@zombieproof: RE 1 and to a lesser extent, 2. The enemies were very much a challenge to defeat, the games had better design, more enemy variations. This game is more like a showpiece for PSVR and the set pieces. Nothing more.
