Retail Game Downloads Coming to 3DS and Wii U eShop

Nintendo has made some major announcements about its new Wii U system, most of them focusing on their new online system, which is the Nintendo Network. Nintendo Network is not a rebranded Nintendo Wi Fi Connection. It is an all new network.

• 200 games for 3DS currently in development
• 60% of all 3DS systems are connected online at any given time
• Wii U will launch before Christmas. Nintendo promises a strong launch lineup.
• Wii U will be NFC enabled.
• Nintendo will offer DLC for first party games on a case by case basis.
• Wii U will have unified account based system ala PSN and Xbox Live. Your account will no longer be tied to your hardware.
• Nintendo will announce a lot more things related to its online and digital strategy in the coming days.
• Digital will include user to user communications and sharing. Iwata mentioned the possibility of selling your copy of digital game to a friend after being done with it.
• FULL RETAIL GAMES WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD ON BOTH 3DS AND WII U ESHOP
• Nintendo Network will be Nintendo's new online network across 3DS and Wii.
• Nintendo will announce major alliances and partnerships with external parties and companies that were not previously considered.
• Wii U will support microtransactions
• Digital will not cannibalize retail, and retail will not cannibalize digital on 3DS and Wii U.
• Miyamoto: Wii U online has to be something totally new and progressive to attract new users.
• Wii U will be more than just improved graphics, but some games, like the new Zelda, will be graphical showcases.
• Communities from Mario Kart will become a regular feature in Nintendo games

well its not quite brand new, shocking info, or anything we didnt guess....

but its nice to hear I will believe Wii U has a strong launch lineup tho when i see it. I think for sure some great games are coming for Wii U. However, if say they are counting Batman Arkham City, Darkness 2, and Dirt 3 as the strong launch games im not sure what to say there. We already have those games to play on other consoles, what the lineup needs is original material. Im certain nintendo will deliver that but i want to see what said material will be. Perhaps Nintendo will learn from the Wii launch that what Wii U's launch needs is perhaps a brand new zelda game. If thats the case, maybe even I will be buying Wii U this year.

Unified accounts...couldn't that just mean you have a friend code attached to an online server rather than hardware. I believe the 3DS is like that. Basically a username, just replaced with a friend code.

That's what I'm hoping. If they have free account based online system similar to steam or xbox live them I'm all for it.

I'm very interested to see what kinda online system Wii U is going to have. They need to ditch the friend codes for gamertags.

thank god nintendo finally got that friend codes are lame. Im happy they are moving to something more like psn/live.

Definitely looking forward to next gen, I'll most likely be getting a Wii U and PS4, but you never know how things will turn out. I may just as easily get the next Xbox over the PS4 if it interests me.

It is actually a smart idea, especially if they charge a commision on the transaction. Say you sell your game to a friend for $45, Nintendo gets $5. Now users can sell digital content, and Nintendo can make money off of used games, it would be genious.
