It's close, but a few kinks still need to be worked out. First, Internet infrastructure needs to improve, especially in the US (but don't knock the US for it--it's tough to wire a country with a lot of rural area between your coasts). Second, there needs to be some settlement on resale rights (otherwise, conscientious gamers may not wish to jump in for fear of lock-in). Opinions are divided over the matter. Some point to the Steam agreement as proof of a no way while others point to last year's judgment against Autodesk (which involved shrink-wrap licensing that overstepped First Sale Doctrine--no-no, said the judge) as a potential hammer to agreement terms.

DD is the future, but I sure am not going to be using it. Mods don't work with the current DD games (at least those issued by Steam), and having a hard copy and a game to play without internet access is always better than having to run a ram-hogging internet based client to play games.

mods do work with games from steam and steam can be run in offline mode. Who is worried about the whole 12mb that steam uses with gbs of ram these days?

ok first off ,, if that happened they better open up some bandwith because, well , now adays it takes 26 minutes to an hour just to download an xboxlive arcade game like banjo kazooie, and thats not even this gens power ok,,,

and next gen i think it will be more powerful ,so no

unless they can pull off cheap 1 tb or higher hard drives,

they wont be getting very far , i already went through 120 almost im down to 90 gigs, of it,

and this gens not even done, ,

45 gigs on my ps3, are left,

so dont even sit there and think for one second retail is doomed, used games when does this ever have to do with digital distribution ,, ,

seriously, , i can go on ebay and find thousand s of used stuff, ,

and yet your saying or they are saying used games mean this industry is doomed, ,

think before you post, ,

how much will a ps4 cost then ,, ? think about it, ,

sony already charged us an arm and a leg this gen ,, ,for what i dont know, , 599.99 ,,

seriously, if this happened, i guess i wont be buyin no ps4 720 in the future , wii 2 i know will have retail , nintendo always has,

always will,

go on go pay 1000 -3000 for a gaming console because im betting you, if this ever happened ,, thats what itll cost,

there for, there goes sony and or microsoft chances at their next console possibly even nintendo , ,

gaming would then cease to exist because no ones gonna pay 3000 -4000 or 1000-2000 for somthing thats not a neccessity,

2000 can be used to buy a car, 4000 even ,,

more games for our last gen consoles at the time lol,

seriously, youll need , big bucks,

big bandwith , oh dont hold your breath if your hdd fails, ,

youll pay for the games twice , or more,

then theres the space issue , ,

if they do not give us like i said 1 -2 tb of space,, ,

what makes you think a 60 gb hdd will hold all these 8 gig max-if they are using dvd standard for their dls, , lol .

forget bluray- 50 gigs, my friends, your hdd will be left with 10 gigs,

2 games the size of a blu ray will fill a 120 gb hdd, ,

lol, so dont count on it, , ,

install 20 360 gamesi n to the biggest available hdd, ,

lets see how far you get, ok thats just 8 gigs, , whos to say next gens are not bigger,

in my book digital distribution fails,

3 main reasons,

1 many people are hesitant to give out credit card debit card numbers to 3rd party

2 ,, not enough band with and thats a fact

3 pricing of the next gen hardware. hdds will be like taking the daytona five hundred charging for a thosand people, to get in , ,

so ya, unless you really , really seriously are arrogant and youll just pay anything out your pocket to play games, i think its time for a new hobby, lol

a 1tb hdd is cheaper than the slowest and cheapest blu ray drive, hdd space is no issue. People are happy to give out their cc cards number on itunes, xbl steam and all the other online stores. Again hdds are dirt cheap. The 360 120gb hdd is the same price as a 400gb notebook drive or a 750gb desktop drive.

Internet access is only requried the first time through. After that, it can be played offline. And the Steam client only takes up 40MB--chump change in today's 4GB and 8GB systems.

What about performance?

won't games have less load times, better frame rate, less pop-in & improved draw distance?

and from a hardware standpoint. wouldn't the system run cooler and quieter because their wouldn't be an optical drive? If you own a 360 do you know how loud it gets when you put in a disc?

The draw distance is primarily a function of GPU memory so won't be affected by this kind of move. As for pop-in, some people complained of major pop-in problems with GTA4...particularly since most all of them owned hard drives.

[QUOTE="_Pedro_"][QUOTE="imprezawrx500"] sure if it comes from coal it is a problem but cars are more of a problem than electricity generation and there is lots of electricity used in the production of retail games so when is the point anyway? Hydro, solar and wind power create no co2 emissions while every car that burns oil creates lots of co2. Even if an electric car is powered from a coal power plant it is still way less polluting than a petrol car. How about the fact that not all counties rely on coal for their main source of power? 60% of New Zealand's power comes from hydro with only 3.3 coal. You can't drive you care without putting out lots of poisons but you can create electricity without pollution. imprezawrx500

I'm not saying that cars aren't the number one polluters, but you are underestimating the amount of countries that still use fossil fules for electricity that's all.

Global warming not proven yet? the internet isn't the place to discuss backgrounds of people so I'll just use the phrase: "If only you knew who you're talking to". Besides when I said "destroying our planet", I didn't mean just GW. Does easter island ring a bell? We are doing the same thing with our planet just on a much bigger scale.

ps: Besides most doom sayers will say this means the end of the earth, but that is just rubbish. The people on easter island survived too I believe, but the penalty they had to pay was severe and the same can happen to us.

With more and more internet companies going with download/upload caps, I do not want DD. That would be unnecessary bandwidth that could be saved from just buying a hard copy.

I think the caps will only last until more infrastructure goes in and someone dares to offer uncapped bandwidth again and assure that it won't be capped. First company to do this (maybe Verizon with their FiOS FTTH) will probably get a good chunk of business and force the others to find a way out.
