guess what retro peeps no they arent current quality of games is so far beyonf that crap from the NES, SNES era its ridiculous...

so stop saying those stupid games from the past are better cause they arent

without the games of the past you wouldn't have the games of today. what ever your favorite game is you wouldn't have it without pong and space invaders. and the for the really old school snes is a new system. you better try to go back to pong, atari, coleco vision, vector, and if you want to include handhelds matels football.

the argument you had is no different than the stuff that goes on sw. the topic in sw is usually about which console and exclusive games are better.

You always make threads claiming FINAL FANTASY X IS THE BEST FINAL FANTASY. Seriously what the hell do you expect. Also you are talking about Halo. We all know Halo is a good game. But console FPS are minor leagues compared to PC FPS which are the Major's.

Graphics aren't everything. Secret of Mana is still fun to play, but I always love KH2 more. Sonic 3 & Knuckles kicks total ass, and it beats the currrent games.

As hard as it is to believe, I would still rather play FF Tactics on the PS1 then a lot of the new stuff that has come out, FFX and Halo 2 included. There's a good reason why many old school games are so highly regarded, and not all of it's nostalgia.

Their going by which had more of an impact AT THAT TIME. I really don't see how this is so hard to understand. Halo 2 did not have as big of an impact on FPS's and Doom did. Get over it.

I just bought Puzzle Fighter Hyper HD Remix from the XBL, and I'm lovin' it. I'm also going to check out the Streets Of Rage 2 trial in a sec. Plus I'm lovin' the COD4 beta.

And Transformers the movie is better than Gone with the Wind, which had crappy black and white graphics and scores zero for special effects and the chick in it isn't even hot. You are right explosions and headshots and hot chicks and story by committee have heralded a new age of enlightenment with ever better movies, games, novels and TV shows.

Sarcasm aside there are some amazing things being done in computer games in the present day, but the best of the older games are still amazing. Without the massive amounts of memory and graphical power developers really had to work hard on that ethereal concept of gameplay (plus they had more time to spend on it) which is what still separates a great game from a good one.

tidus222- I believe your speech is regarding the technical aspects of the games. In this sense, I agree with you. But I don't otherwise.

I believe your forgetting the biggest factor and that's the time period in which every title is released. It's the same difference as new movies with their sparkling graphics such as "300" and older hits ala "Star Wars". If you take into account that Star Wars was filmed in 1977, it was unbelievable at the time. Same goes for Star Trek, Jaws, etc.

Congradulations on turning 21! Woot dring a beer!

Anyhow, big games of 1987 for instance had the same amount of devtime put into as games of now. I remember reading about a bunch of hits before their launch for months on end.. felt like years in Nintendo Power. So when the big guns arrived, you just knew it. No different then now. Only difference ppl today are more picky and unsatisfied with everything in general.

So you can't sit here and tell us that 95% of titles on NES and SNES are crap because by today's standards, there's just as much crap if this is what you imply.

The games of Nintendo and Playstation1 and 2 laid the ground work for what we have today. Halo series a new era game. Most great games are sequels to games of old systems.

the difference is games of old didnt have stories, voice acting, great soundtracks realistic graphics, or in depth gameplay...

movies can be compared cause the only real difference is CGI....

Again, FF Tactics. Great story, great soundtrack, awesome and deep gameplay that easily holds up to today's games.

Theres no way to really compare, say, Pong to Oblivion. But I always agree with the "respect the past" notion. But I do see what peoplemean when they say Doom was better than Halo or FF3 better than FFx. They were the originals, they were unique for the time. Almost every month a new FPS comes out or some RPG attempt in an already flooded market.

The games of today are incredible, but the past games felt just as amazing back in the day.

Retro gamers seen it all. We seen everythin. We seen the transformation of the industry. Its like WE were at the "birth" of gaming and continue to support it forever. Retro gamers dont have to go back and learn history...we were part of it...we enjoyed it as it happened. Yo, was it me or did Donkey Kong JR on the Coleco owned in the graphics department early "80"s. Also, feel gracious you "young" gamers have forums and stuff to talk to other gamers. Retro guys wouldve loved this back in the day!

Soooooo...Minority Report:Everybody Runs for the PS2 is better than Contra on the NES??? Everybody is titled to their own opinion...who knows...you'll probably be saying the same thing twenty years from now...oh FFX is better than this Interactive VR Sim..."So what if it puts me in the game..."

Kinda reminds me of when Marty McFly went to the future and founda shooter game (from the 80's)and the kids didn't like it becauseyou had to useyour hands to play it..."Think McFly...think..."

"Not that old" is a relative statment. For instance, you started on the ps1, yet that was my 4th gen of gaming. Further, games like Chrono Trigger, Zelda (for the SNES), Street Fighter 2, Bomberman and Tetris all stand the test of time and are just as great today.

I hate nostalgia laced comments too, but what you said crosses the line. Chrono Trigger really has aged well (gameplay-wise).

Ok, first off. I've never heard someone say the original doom and quake are better than halo. Second, you must not have been a big gamer back then. Third, you are 21 and still spell and talk like that? Pretty weak man. Forth, everyone has their own opinion. and Fifth, you don't know what you are talking about.

Tactics isn't that old? Man its a decade old man and I still think Tactics Ogre > Final Fantasy Tactics and FFVI > FFVII. Seeing as how I can compare these games to each other why can FFT not be considered when the others are?

Personally, the second gen was the greatest console generation (NES, Sega Master System). I played consoles before then and after. No console made an impact on me like those two. I havent felt the joy of playing like i did withSuper Mario Bros, Zelda, Mike Tysons Punch Out, Mega Man, Bionic Commando, World Runner, Goonies, Kid Icarus Metroid and countless others. As good as the games look and such.. no generation made me fall in love with gaming like the NES and Sega did back then.

Damn, sorry about the flashback.

the difference is games of old didnt have stories, voice acting, great soundtracks realistic graphics, or in depth gameplay...

movies can be compared cause the only real difference is CGI....

Again, FF Tactics. Great story, great soundtrack, awesome and deep gameplay that easily holds up to today's games.

FF tactics isnt that old

i was more talking about NES, SNES era where pretty much no games had a storyline, goodsoundtrack, or in depth gameplay

PS1 was really the start of great games for me

a few games from the SNES like FF6, supermario world, hold up well but overall NES, SNES games were shallow trash

CHRONO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But voice acting, great soundtracks, realistic graphics are not requirements of an amazing game. Stories aren't even a neccesity (anyone know if Tetris has a story?), and I don't know what in depth gameplay actually means (complex controls?). Maybe the difference for older gamers is that for them a game does not have to be as close to an interactive movie as possible.

And if you want to talk story, for pure story telling, the best of the old text based adventures beat anything that is out today just as a good novel beats the story of any movie. A lot of point and click games also had excellent storylines.

"Not that old" is a relative statment. For instance, you started on the ps1, yet that was my 4th gen of gaming. Further, games like Chrono Trigger, Zelda (for the SNES), Street Fighter 2, Bomberman and Tetris all stand the test of time and are just as great today.

Bionic Commando........ my favorite NES Capcom game without question. Why hasn't Capcom done a sequel or remake to that yet?

I'm from that era and it often annoys me at times when people don't appreciate the great games being achieved in the present. I respect their tastes (some of my favourites are very very old) but people will be talking about the likes of Shadow Of The Colossus, Resident Evil 4 and Bioshock in 15-20 years just as the nostalgic reflect on the old times.

Gaming is certainly improving I can tell you that.

Games began having voice acting and great CD quality soundtracks since 1989 FYI. They had great storylines, realistic graphics is not a must to enjoy a game, and you say they didn't had depth gameplay? you got to be kidding me.:|

Nothing like an uneducated gamer.

While i think the point that you tried to make is valid it fails because you worded it so horrifically wrong. Some retro games are better than current gen games but i agree with you initial thoery. There are some older gamers who are incredibly ignorant in thinking new games will never be as good as the old games, It's comments like "you're a n00bb you grew up with Playstation" that annoy me. Or stuff like "FFvii is only popular because it was the first on playstation"....and the most idiotic "OoT is just LttP in 3D". They do annoy me.

Games had great graphics on their time, which is what counts. You're talking as if people were sighing while playing the games and wishing for 3D hi-rez graphics. People left they were playing the games with the best graphics, just like now.

There will be much better looking games in the future than what is is now, but still the games that are out now wowed people, just like before, just like always.
